Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

Good morning everyone! Happy Friday.

Morning folks! Think I forgot to mention I got my Chromecast in earlier this week. Looks like I got my order in just in time as rumors are flying that Amazon orders will be delayed for a long time now. Also got an e-mail that my Netflix code would be mailed to me 5 days after my Chromecast. So I should get it next week :)

I absolutely love this thing. It finally gives us a good option to rent movies. Since we cut the satellite out and went to antenna, we've relied on Netflix streaming...which doesn't usually have the latest and greatest in movies. We also have no Redbox or video rental place within 20 miles of us....well, if you don't count the Redbox knockoff in the BP gas staion by our house which contains scratched up DVDs... So this will give us the option to rent from the Play Store and stream directly on the TV in the living room. :) I should also be able to cast browser tabs and watch football games this fall on ESPN3. It's pretty fun just to be able to sit there and find a youtube video I want to show my wife and press a button and it's on the TV for both of our viewing pleasure. DEFINITELY worth the $35 even if it didn't come with the Netflix promotion.

AND it's super fast to respond. Google did a good job with this.

Most definitely. From the time I click the Cast button on Youtube, it starts playing withing 2 seconds....no longer than it would take to buffer on my phone. I can't wait to see what devs do with this thing.

Hey folks, I almost forgot to tell you!

Last month SquareTrade ran a video contest: create and post a YouTube video telling people how much you love SquareTrade, what happened to your gear and how they made it better. Four lucky people will be drawn to win a prize.

I WON!

This is the down payment they sent me... some nice SquareTrade shwag!

SquareTradeShwag.jpg

The main prize? A 55" LED TV and a 3-year warranty on it! :D :D :D

Problem is, I already HAVE a 55" LED 3DTV and really don't need another one. So I'll likely sell the prize to fund a nice Bed & Breakfast trip for me and the Darling Bride.

She's a tad upset with me that it's not going in the bedroom like she wants. Too bad. Every relationship article I've read over the years all say that the WORST thing you can do for a marriage (and sleep cycle) is have a TV in the bedroom. And it's not going in there. We've never had a TV in the bedroom, not in 23 years... and we're not starting now.

Anybody need a 55" TV? :p

I really am not a fan of the Emergency Broadcast System pinging my phone. I damn near jump out of my skin whenever it goes off.

I could use one (for free though), haha.

Congrats Chief - that's amazing.

Same here - it always makes me jump.

The emergency broadcasting system pings your phone?

Yes, not through any existing messaging system either. Full vibrate, same claxon they use on TV at full volume with a message that appears on top of the lock screen. I think all phones have the chip nowadays, it is just if local emergency services have the capability to utilize it.

I didn't take a screenie of this one, but it is for flash flooding. Here is one I got last winter:

Never seen anything like that here.

It's in your phone man, its in you phone.:p

My understanding is the message is broadcast by emergency services completely separate from your carrier. It is based on where you phone is physically located, not where your number is registered. So even though you are in Alabama, were you in my area you would have received the alert as well. They use it for Amber Alerts, weather alerts, and anything else they skwak the tv and radio for.

I'll see if I can get a better description of it.

No no....I understand what you're saying and understand it's location based....but my phone, nor my wife's, has ever done that.

Mine just beeps and vibrates.... Just got this one...

Here in the Netherlands it's just for severe emergencies, though Domestic Affairs. For sure not for Amber alerts nor for weather.
They can select every phone in one or more zip codes here.

I'll pay you "tree fiddy" for the tv. :D

Bah, no. :(
I think it's going to be impossible to find copper wire in stores so I may have to order it online. Other issue is, my S3 doesn't stick to the orb with a case on.

Just a few days ago i got an amber alert for the area near San Francisco where I live. The odd thing is, I'm in Italy. It showed up as a notification bar alert for Weather Bug.
