Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

Wow, this has sparked a good conversation. So, I went into the local verizon store today and profiled, yes i said profiled, lol, the salespeople. I picked the guy that I believed was most likely to understand and be willing to do what i wanted to do and voila...used Hubby's upgrade for a new phone then transferred my number to it and put his number back on his dumb one. Their system did make us activate his number on the phone, albeit for just a moment. He did inform me that Verizon has issued some sort of internal about people who are trying to add a line then do the switch in order to keep their unlimited, guess this is a no no. That being said, it is no issue to do what I did. However, I did ask that if when my phone is do for an upgrade could I transfer to hubby to do essentially the same thing and he said no. That even transferring the upgrade on an unlimited line will loose the unlimited. Hope this helps! And for which phone I went with, see my next post....

And the winner is...LG G2. So i did some more reading and really looked at the software of the LG skin. I have to agree with NJ02Vette. This phone is very sweet! A lot of the skin is why i have chosen a rom in the past and many of the customization are similar to the mods i was flashing on Nexie. Granted, I just picked it up and got home with it so I have some setting up to do, but so far, I think I am in love with my phone again. I am looking forward to putting it through the paces and really using it in the next few days. Thank you for everyone's opinion, it does help to "talk" these things out with each other. FWIW, I love the back buttons already. The G2 feels perfect in the hand and other than the habit of where the buttons were on the Nexie, this is more intuitive to me. I will report more later. Thanks again! Copa...

@NJ02vette: I was simply illustrating the worst case for Copacetic. You happen to be one of the happy adherents I spoke of. But if she's going to root & ROM, then the G2 would be an excellent choice of phone: again, hoping the development community gets hot on writing ROMs for it. Having watched the streaming reveal, though, I decided against it. So I thought that mine was a balanced statement.

@Halon: At some point they will do away with unlimited data, but I really don't think it's imminent. Maybe once all unlimited accounts are month to month (next year or 2015) they will pull the trigger and force all remaining unlimited accounts into a tiered plan. Hopefully T-Mobile, Sprint or another LTE carrier will have solidly expanded into my area by then.

Chief, you've certainly been fair. I just took exeception to the comment that there were people pulling their hair out over the software. Simply not true. Other than quick writeups that didn't go in depth, there's not too many complaints with the software skin and enhancements. And many comment that the stock launcher is one of the best they even used.

It was more a reaction to a piss poor biased writeup. Not every phone is right for everyone else, that's what's great about the Android ecosystem.

Or we could all be fighting over a quasi-gold colored phone that looks the same as the one from a year ago. :D

Oh. Ok. I just noticed that y'all seemed to be focused on the newly released phones and wondered. I have been participating in my company's health incentive all year and at the end of it I will get a bonus of $400 which comes to me next month. Yea! So that is my phone fund. Thank goodness as my poor nexus is beginning to beg for mercy. The screen burn in alone is driving me crazy. I want a phone that won't do that next go around.

LCDs can't suffer that by design, AMOLEDs may. Something to keep in mind if you want a guarantee on that.

I know. That's one of the things I have been dithering over about my next phone choice. But I really do want an external sd slot this time and that is hard to find.

Yeah, it's a trend that seems to be winding down. The only big manufacturer's to include a slot on their latest flagships are Samsung, Sony, and Asus. Not sure if some of the smaller or less popular ones like ZTE or Hauwei are still using them though. Being on Verizon, that leaves you with only Samsung and the S4 or Note III for 2013 devices.

Good Morning AF friends. So naturally, i played heavily with the G2 yesterday and after about 6 hours of on screen time, i still had 45 percent battery left (and i started at 90%). I have been off the charger now for about an hour with constant use and show a 2 percent battery drop. My Nexie would be down by at least 20 percent by now and never would have given me 6 hours of screen time without a charge. So the battery life on this thing is a true delight. The double tap to turn on the screen has been flawless and very convenient. All phones should do this! The LG software is actually very good. I used Nova Launcher always before and have pretty much replicated my Nexie with the stock launcher on the G2, so no need for me to have a different launcher loaded. As to Q slide, i disabled that as i did not find the little slides useful and their presence as a toggle in the pull down was too busy. The ability to access three apps with three fingers quickly is definitely nifty, but so far, i haven't figured out if i can use them in a split window. If not, the recent apps button basically does the same for me, albeit potentially more cumbersome with apps. As to the recent apps, long press the home button and wallah, its right there. LG removed it as a navigation button but the function does still exist. As i said yesterday, while this is LG's skin, it does remind me of a custom rom with tons of options to customize. Not as many as we saw in Sourcery (but seriously, I only used a handful of them) but most of the ones that I became accustomed to. I do miss the ability to program a Nav button to go directly to voice search with google. LG has its own voice search but i have yet to try it. Yes there is a lot of bloatware, between LG's stuff and Verizon's, plenty to irritate. Today i will see how the gps works and a better test on the signal as we will be out and about. So far, the call quality and the sound has been great, better than our Nexie. Signal strength is better everywhere and hand off has been flawless. And of great importance to me, no lag. No waiting for the screen to come on, no frozen screen nothing. Just fast and smooth. I remember thinking the same when Ii went from the Droid X to the Nexie, wonder what we will be saying 2 years from now. lol. I will pop in later with a rundown on the camera and gps. Have a great Sunday!

Good morning Copacetic and I am pleasantly surprised to hear that you LIKE the G2's software! I can admit that in some rare cases I can be wrong (well, less than 100% right, anyway)... and this is one of them :)

Sounds like you've successfully re-assigned your Nexie to the status of emergency standby reserve phone: I so look forward to doing the same to my beloved Ginny, who has recently taken to giving me more and more hints that it's past time for her to retire.

There are unofficial reports out there that Verizon will be shipping the Note 3 on 9/29, so I have lots of digits crossed that I'll have mine in hand long before October 10th. I already have my 64 GB microSD card and just ordered my S-view flip cover and flexible glass screen protector. Ready for this bad thing to get here! :D

Good morning everyone else and have a great Sunday!

I was just on their site, I love the oleophobic quality and the impact resistance. I always use a screen protector so maybe this is the one i will order! Thanks

Sorry, just have never used a screen protector for about 4 years and have never incurred a scratch. Screens these days are quite good at resisting scratches, but if it puts your mind at ease, go for it. :)

My thoughts exactly.

I never used a Windows phone and I don't know anyone that has one.

In other news...purchased a Sony Soundbar today at BestBuy and they price matched Amazon. I saved $60. Hooking it up was easy and I threw in Bill&Ted, sounds great.

If/when I have a house I will go full surround sound.

I had an HTiB years ago. It was nice. Living in an apartment I have nowhere to hide all the wires. But if I get a house I want to build my own starting with the receiver.
