Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

Halon, my son will love those videos.

I'm enjoying this morning, my kids still have school so I get to drop them off and pick them up, and a morning date with my wife. Then get to go to my kids gymnastics class which I have never been to. And doing some couch shopping.

Has anyone watched The Hobbit yet? There is a theater near Pittsburgh that is playing the high frame rate version that I want to see, need to get my butt there soon!

Yesterday I took one of my nieces xmas shopping and she wanted to watch Life of Pi. I gave her the book months ago to read but she told she couldn't understand some of the words. I told her to use a dictionary as she reads it! LOL Anyways, she loved the movie! As did I, for the second time.

Morning folks! Hope everyone had a great weekend! Took the wife out ice skating Saturday. We always go back to where we went ice skating on our first date every year on the weekend before Christmas as a first date anniversary of sorts. As usual, the wife skated while I tried not to fall while the little ankle-biters skated circles around me.

A lot of the discussion over the weekend between us though was of Friday's tragedy. It was kind of a reality check and really sobering that we had to even have this discussion, but we did anyway. I didn't have to tell her this because I knew she would anyway, but I told her if something ever did happen like that to do whatever she had to do to protect the children. She loves her students so much though, that I knew that wouldn't even be a question, just a matter of reaction to her. Really sobering and scary to think about.

That's really sweet to go ice skating, Geek (and that you keep that tradition going strong. :D
Still soaking in this tragedy. :( Why I keep reading internet commentors is beyond me. Outrageous things being spewed out. :banghead:

Since I don't have cable I'm not bombarded with news about the tragedy so the only thing I see is on the internet and I have barely looked into any of it. I know everything I need to know about...it happened and who did it. It was senseless and horrific. And from what I've heard the media went too far on reporting it. Interviewing little kids about it? Really? Screw your ratings.

What has upset me so much about the media coverage is not that they keep plastering the name and face of the shooter all over the place (although I do think that's a practice that should change), not that they interviewed the kids (not a big problem with that)... It's the fact that every piece of coverage I've seen devotes less than half of the time to the facts of the event, the heroic stories, and the memory of the lives lost and then quickly turn to politics. Ex, how the President is handling it (body language analysis), and arguments for and against gun control. This is not the time for political plays. This it the time for recognizing the fallen, recognizing the heroic efforts of the teachers, encouraging and praying for that community, etc. The politics can and will play out later and will take care of itself without the media pushing their views on how this affects it down our throats.

Just absolutely terrible these parents have this loss just before the holidays. A time to cherish those moments of your children opening up Santa's gifts on that morning.

This. Granted, I don't have kids, but I have nieces. I called them the other day, just to say hi, and that I love them. My one niece is getting ready to start school.

This is a dark world we live in anymore...

I agree, just attempting to talk about the issue at work brings up gun control politics withing a minute or too. This is my last week and then a get a month off. One of the perks and also problems with being a college prof. Guess I'm going to be hanging around here a lot with all you fine people. :D

I sent a pm to Steven asking him to remove my title of Guide. A couple days after becoming a Guide I decide to limit my time on the internet. Needles to say I have not performed any Guide duties. Apologies to all you for not doing my part. I'm not leaving the forum, I'm just trying not be on the internet so much. You other Guides keep up the good work! Again, sorry.

Hey all, long time no see :) Hope everyone is well! Apologies for not being around more often.

For the holidays this year, I've finally decided to ask for a tablet. I think taking my big laptop on my Israel trip in a few weeks would be cumbersome, and a tablet would be much more convenient and portable. I was hoping some of the tablet owners here would help me out, as I'm having trouble deciding which one to get, I want to keep it under $200, but I think I would prefer a 10-inch model. I've heard good things about the Coby Kyrus line of tablets, but they're not officially supported by Google, and can't get access to Google Play without being rooted. So I guess my question is, do you guys think I should go with the Nexus 7, or a larger tablet that will need to be rooted? Thanks in advance for any opinions :)

EDIT - Further thoughts: I don't mind rooting whatever tablet I buy, but I don't know if rooted Google Play will function in the same way, this is totally new territory for me. Is rooting for Google Play easier than sideloading all my apps? Could I transfer a TiBu backup .zip to my tablet and simply download all my apps to the tablet?

Razor, if you're looking for a 10" you'll be strapped. Looks like deals can be found on a TF300T, but you'll likely have to get closer to $300. :(
I definitely recommend a N7. If you're looking for something with more productivity, I love my Chromebook (you can get the Acer for $200 I believe). Really don't know anything about the Coby line.

Hey dread, thanks a ton. Obviously my first thought was the N7 because of all the great things you guys say about it :) I guess I thought about a 10 inch because of the thrill of seeing apps blown up that large, my games, etc., but maybe I should go and play with some tablets at a Verizon store or Radio Shack or something.

Definitely can recommend a N7, Razor. Great tablet. It has a really good display. You'll really be strapped to find a decent 10" for $200. Can't beat the N7 for that price range. Might even suggest a Kindle Fire.

I'll be honest, I really don't like 10" tablets. Even the lightest ones are still too heavy for me (I'm a little weak/lazy guy :o). Only reason I like my Prime, keyboard dock. But, it's actually still heavier than my Chromebook. Also, the latter has a better keyboard and trackpad albeit a worse screen.

SO do you have a nexus 7 asby the sounds of it thats the perfect tab for you :D

Oh i see you have one.

Well, as I mentioned, the Coby Kyrus line seems decent at that price (ie. this one at $149), but I need to figure out if it will function correctly, even once it's rooted. Decent specs (1 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB storage), and it's only 1.5 pounds.

EDIT: Umm, okay, I'm not sure why the Amazon link isn't working, it's some kind of issue with the Phandroid redirect code. I'll put the link here, just copy and paste:
