Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

Packet inspection sails very close to the wind.

Comcast got in trouble for it, and the matter is one of political debate involving Net Neutrality, the courts and the FCC.

Because of its highly political nature and my standing as a site representative, I am proscribed from further comments, sorry.

Searching for "site:androidforums.com EarlyMon net neutrality" may yield insight into my views expressed previously, no promises on the search results though.

For purposes of our discussion, let's put it all under the heading - carriers can know about your connectivity using various methods.

I was just wondering whether DPI could contribute to the ability to detect/track tethering. Sorry that came across as an inquiry about views. My knowledge is from the Net Neutrality context, too, and I understand the sensitivity there.

Good morning and happy almost Friday everyone!

Hopefully its a quiet day at work today - definitely seems like it will be though. Took this shot this morning, filtered through instagram, but still came out real cool.

No problem, I didn't take it as a personal question but rather a technical one as you intended. :)

Let me put it this way - instead of DPI let's use "knife" in place of deep packet inspection, substitute "wife" for internet traffic, and see how the question adds up. ;)

Does your carrier use a knife on your wife to see if you are tethering?

I don't know how to answer that without implying illegal activity on the part of the carrier, nor know how to answer without opening a discussion that would have to lead inevitably to areas that I am constrained from discussing, and that's why I am avoiding the question.

Nothing wrong with you and others discussing it, but staff (red or green) has to stay out of that part. Sorry about that, I understand that you are asking something simple and fundamental, but rules are rules, so it is what it is. :)

For those unfamiliar, internet messages travel in packets. Comcast was found to be using deep packet inspection to evaluate if people _might_ _possibly_ be downloading movies via bittorrenting and throttling traffic rates down to practically zero if they _assumed_ that was going on. And they got into a world of hurt over it.

There was a great deal of political and legal fallout from that. Googling for Comcast deep packet inspection (with or without torrent added) can lead folks interested in learning more.

That's really all that I can say. :o

But eavesdropping is an interesting question, isn't it?

The first result friom this search is my first go round with EarlyMon where i realized I was an unarmed person in a battle of wits.

I just used that search and found that I'd linked some very interesting articles in the Net Neutrality thread regarding one of the major carriers.

As for the other/above... yeah. No.

A lot of people encounter that, Pup, the important thing is you realized it in time to bow out before you were... ahem... obliterated from the face of the earth

P.S. Sure are spending a lot of time in here lately Early... Thinking of trading in your LTEvo for a Nexus?

Morning everyone!
Looks like we picked up some more friends here. Great! I was getting tired of the regulars anyway. :p;)
Welcome Marc and Bymis. :D I agree with the other folks and saying if you have any thoughts of rooting, do it pretty soon after you get your Nexus. If you want to hold off a few days or week or so, just don't go crazy with too much customization as you'll have to start all over again.

I am a regular and i resemble that remark!

Wow, thanks Dread, I am sure we all appreciate you honesty about how you feel about us! ;)

Pretty sweet aj, I use wunderground for Jeff Master's blog during hurricane season, it's a great resource, but congrats on your photo!

Morning everyone, happy thursday!

Welcome Marc and Bymis!

You will have fun here!

Happy Thursday y'all.

No, loving the LTEvo, and got it for a steal. :)

BTW - what do you call it when someone has an obsession with complicated apartment buildings?

A complex complex complex.

Which is what I think some of you cats are trying to give me! :D

Most psychologists just call it the 3C complex. Don't ask me why, since what they are saying is that it is the complex complex complex complex, and that just makes no sense. I honestly think they are trying to make everyone crazy... Although, when you think about it, makes perfect sense  :p ;)

Well, I have had the AT&T one X for a few days now, put it through its paces storm chasing, as well as everyday use and... well. You don't really want to know what I actually think of the device...

As much as I hate to say this, the HOX blows away my Nexus. Pretty much in all respects. Reception. Check, calls are great, even when I was down in Deer Trail, calls where good. Data was pretty consistant, given the fact I was out east. A couple times it dropped to E (edge) and data crawled, this is understandable due to my location. I was able to pull up a radar image when needed pretty much, though it did take a bit in a few areas. Same getting twitter, but this is Edge so.

Battery life? Yeah. I charge my Nexus in the morning before going to work and take a spare battery. There has been a few times I have totally drained the battery before leaving work, or needed to swap out before or just after I get home. The HOX, even under the stress I put it under during the chase, the battery was still about 1/4 full by the time I got home. This was from phone calls, radar maps, twitter, and a bit of web browsing and tapatalk use.

Camera? Well, it is a phone, but the photos are decent. Many shot with the nexus, which, BTW, I had to buy HDR+ to make the camera useful, still where not great. The HOX does a better job, though some of the shots I take, I am asking a lot of, like storm clouds.

Screen. No contest here. The One X makes the nexus look like its using a 15 watt lightbulb vs a 100 watt! The screen is beautiful.

Drivers (windows 7) yeah, no contest here either. Installing the HTC drivers, rooting and unlocking the bootloader (while did cause a few hiccups) was not a major PITA like the MTP drivers for the Nexus.

Sound: Yeah, music sounds better from the HOX as well. Its just a bit louder, could be a Beats thing, but still, some of my albums are louder and sounds pretty good. I am using a pair of cheap 10 sony headphones.

The bottom line?

So far, despite a few minor issues, the One X just blows away my Nexus. Sad to say, but its true. The phone has, so far, proved itself way better then the erratic data connection of the nexus. I even got a slight signal in my basement (will still need the network extender).

Now, there are a few possibilities I need to clear up:
1) My nexus could just be a lemon (it was a refurb)
2) Verizon could just suck in my area

So, there you have it. :o

Hope I am still allowed to play here with my AT&T contraband :o

Thanks for the review AJ.

I may not go with a Nexus as my next phone - it really depends on the development for the device. I just want the latest and greatest.
