Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

I don't know what to say or think about this. Star Wars? That's kind of the standard by which other sagas are compared. Messing with it is like playing with matches in a dynamite factory: you either do it very carefully and very well, or you blow the whole thing.

I truly hope they base the stories on the "Heir to the Empire" trilogy of books. It was a seamless transition from Return of the Jedi, and truly picked up where the movies left off. If Disney can do Episodes 7,8 and 9 out of that... then WOW.

Just WOW.

I'm currently reading that trilogy. If they do that one picking who plays Luke, Leia and Han will be a big thing. I would really hope they don't go the big star route or try and pick people that look like the original actors. What might be interesting would be seeing Vader after Ep. 3 and his journey up to Ep. 4.

Happy Halloween Gnex Hole ;)

Thought you folks would like this. :)

Morning folks!
If anyone likes a little throw-up in their mouth, check out Engadget's review of the iPad mini:
iPad mini review -- Engadget
It really is atrocious how biased it is. Every time they find a "flaw" they have something like "the average consumer won't notice" line. I'm sure it's a fine device, and it's so "handsomely built", but it has a lower res screen than the N7 and a dated processor and sells for $139 more.

Morning everyone! Happy Halloween!

Dread - I don't feel like throw-up in my mouth this morning, so I will pass on reading it, but I have a question... Will the average consumer not notice it costs $129 more than a superior android tablet? Cause that is the biggest flaw of all. (This comes from my Apple-loving coworker, who says the mini is an abomination to him at that price.) Apple's hubris strikes again, they think they don't have to compete because they are Apple. Oh well, just another market where Android's significant price difference will erode Apple's support.

We have family friends who are Apple fanatics. They also have plenty of money to afford it if they wanted to. I think Topolsky is right in quoting Schiller as saying this is not a budget iPad, it's a different device altogether.

Ugh, I'm tired of hearing about the iPad mini. It was an irrelevant device the moment they unveiled it and now made even more irrelevant with the refresh of the N7 and introduction of the N10. I'd question your intelligence if you bought an iPad mini over an N7. Heck, I'd question it if you bought it over an N10 even more probably. $399 for a 10" tablet with a display like that or $329 for an iPad mini?? Apple missed the mark big time on this tablet but they'll continue to hype it and rationalize the reasons that they decided to make it with inferior specs.

Happy Halloween!

One of the departments that was laid off at work, their last day is today. About 35 people going through exit interviews and receiving their severance. Distracting and sad.

Hi all - just checking real quick. Power is on but cable/internet is still out. Hoping to have it back today.

Gonna do some catching up of the threads and stuff I missed over the weekend.

Everything of mine is okay - what a horrible storm though. Hope everyone else that experienced it stayed safe & dry.

I decided to go ahead and try window 8 and nabbed the free Media center while they are offering it. I must say, I like it. I don't think the learning curve is big if you are already accustomed to something that uses apps, oh, say like an android phone, lol. In fact, now my laptop has some functionality to it similar to my Nexie. The app store is definitly sparse, but i have taken advantage of a few of the apps. I deleted most of the pre-installed metro apps and chose to go with the google apps and a variety of others that met my needs. Once you play with it for a bit, it is fairly smooth and becomes more comfortable. however, the install was a PItA. I had to uninstall several items the biggest one being my anti virus. Then I had to start the laptop with everything but microsoft services disabled. Eventually i got it all loaded but it took about ten tries until i had a go. Mind you, each try takes over an hour. That being said, it is faster and so far the battery life on my laptop seems better. I will report more when I have used it for a few days. An additional bonus is I do have a touch screen on my laptop. however, a good multifunction mouse works quite well.

Thanks, Copacetic. I needed someone I know to be the guinea pig and give me a realistic appraisal of Windows 8. I'm still hesitant about it; it just seems more geared to touchscreens. But your good report assuages me :)

So it's a BEE-otch to install, huh? I'm rather apprehensive about data loss if I try to install it on my Win7 machine... but at least I'm not so nervous about a new laptop that comes with Win8 on it.

JMar, hope you got to watch the parade. Speeches were a testament to teamwork (a la, there's no "I" in "Team"). Pretty entertaining show all told.

Well done with trick or treating. Had a record turnout in our neighborhood this year, not sure why it was different this year, normally we have a ton of our own candy left, this year none... Oh well kids did the whole neighborhood this year, so we have PLENTY of candy still. I wish I could send some up to the kids who aren't going to be able to do it this year due to Sandy. Those pictures of the little kids being rescued by the National Guard troops break my heart. :(

Hey Chief, I did not loose one bit of data. I installed on a windows 7, 64 bit Dell laptop, 2 years old. Even though I have a touch screen, I am using the mouse as I always have because it is just more comfortable on a laptop. What I found is anything that the pre check found not compatible had to be removed. That included photoshop elements (I had an older version, it said to upgrade to a newer version however I re-installed after windows 8 was installed and it ran fine. Also Fast access facial recognition, same issue here, worked fine once re-installed. It also would not work with the Ntrig that controlled the windows 7 touch screen, guess that makes sense. After several tries, each time it would go through the process and at the end simply say "we were not able to upgrade, we have set your system back to where it was before you started the upgrade. " (it is a long process). The good thing was i was back to normal and could use the lap top as always until i had time to try again. In the end it worked great, just uninstall what is not compatible, delete, not disable, you're anti virus program. Finally, do a clean boot : msconfig, system configuration, general tab, mark selective start-up, mark load system services, clear load start up item. Then on the services tab, select hide all Microsoft services then disable all. Then click ok and restart. Once up, I reran the windows 8 installer and wallah! Re-installed security programs and then tried re-installing the couple of programs it said were not compatible one by one with a restart between each so i could isolate any issues. The only program that truly did not work was an old resume program that I do not really use. All in all, I am really liking it. And as I said, the mouse works great for navigation, the only real issue is learning the new , cool things, you can do!
