Root Galaxy Prevail 2.3.6 rooting successful... now some questions

haleyesxl

Newbie
I followed the "... rooting for Dummies.." guide and it was a snap. Thank you so much for posting this step by step thread. It was just the thing to help this newbie get his feet wet in the "rooting" pool... in the shallow end. ;)

I have many questions, and some have been answered in the threads and posts already. I'll ask just a few for now though..

I see everyone recommends Titanium Backup. Will I be able to backup programs as apk files as well? I had a Backup and Restore program that I used to sideload some apps to a Kindle Fire. What, if anything, should I be especially careful NOT to do with this app?

I have what seems to be the latest version of CTmod 3.80. I've noticed that everytime I reboot I'm asked to give this program (and another one) superuser access. For now I'm just clicking <This time only>. Should I click something else?

Are there any Themes for this newer version? I can't seem to find any. And if I want to try a different wallpaper can I go back to the dark, proprietary one that comes with this version without re-flashing?

Whenever I use Mi File Explorer, it tells me there is an update. When I try to update it goes to the ADX? website, but the site doesn't do anything. Could I delete this one and use ES File Explorer? Do you have a better one to recommend?

I'm trying a different Keyboard app... Smart Keyboard Trial. Seems to work ok. Any issues with it?

I'm also trying out Handcent as an alternative messenging app. I liked the old stock one but now it's white lettering on a black background and I can't find a way to change that.. Handcent asks to be made the MAIN messenger... any reason to say no? Can I revert to the stock one without "flashing"?

Is it true that if I turn off the Data icon in the pull down notification menu I'll still get phone and txt messages?

My ram varies between 125mb and 64mb free. out of a total of 250mb. At what level is there a slow down in functionality?

Again, let me thank everyone who shares their knowledge and experience with those of us that need it. You are appreciated.

First off WELCOME to the forums!
Wow! Lots of questions, but questions are a good thing.
1) titanium is your best friend, allow always with superuser, yes it backs up
the apk and the data. You then can restore the data or just the app.

2) give all the ones superuser asks permission for all the time.

3) there are a couple of themes out there with revert back to stock, just look for them or I will post later.

4) you can delete that one of mi file expl. and use es or any other that you want.

5) I used smart keyboard and loved it.

6) turning off data is the best for battery life, and you will get texts and phone use.

7) android will stop apps and clear memory as needed, but sometimes it slows down and if given a little time it will run up to speed again, there are a few tweaks that will help that though.

NOW JUST REMEMBER TO ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE TRYING ANYTHING NEW!!!!!!!!!!!
You can then try something and if it doesn't work out right you can alway restore the backup and be back to where you were good and then try again with something different.

Hope this helps and just ask more ?'s if need be:)

Thank for your answers...

Another question or two. Is there a discusion here in the threads about how to actually use Titanium Backup, or more to the point, what to be careful about when using it? Should I be giving superuser access to this program?

Which brings up another Q. What programs should or should not be given this type of access? How will I know?

When I do a backup from ClockworkMod does this also backup apps and data as well? Or is that a Titanium function?

Oh.. I still couldn't find a Theme for CTMod 3.80. I just wanted to try loading one...see how it's done. I'm the kind of guy that asks "What will happen if I push that red button".... :)

Thx to all.

You should give "Superuser access" to all the programs who are asking for it.... ( of course only if you know the program and you installed it )...... and check the " Remember settings " or whatever it says

There may be a tutorial about titanium backup but I do not know where it would be. When you make a CWM backup it does save your data and your apps and then titanium is 4 if you want to restore an older app that you were using and got rid of or the data to an older app or possibly even a newer app. When I get home from work I will post the themes for you that you can use.

This theme is mine and it is pretty cool Green Me 3.8 - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/59319262/Green.Me.CT3.80.zip

This is a revert back to stock(as flash this to get rid of any theme and go back to stock) Back to stock 3.8 - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/59319262/Back To Stock CT3.80.zip

Always make a backup anyways just incase. You just download them, then put on your sd card and go into CWM find them and flash, reboot and there you have it.

These are from gus and are great too!

Just remember to only flash ones that are the same as the rom you are running. So you are on 3.80 mine are and use the ones from gus for 3.80 too.
Just make one backup now before flashing any of these and if any problems just restore the backup and you will be back to now with no theme. If you have room just download them all and put on sd card. I would flash one and before flashing another either restore your backup or flash the back to stock. sometimes after one then when you try another sometimes they mix. I just restore the backup and then try another would be the best. Also wipe the cache and dalvik in CWM before flashing them too. It might take up to 3-10 mins to reboot so dont worry.

Thank you. Gonna try it tmro. Rather than ask questions AFTER I flash these , (maybe I should change my username to Questions :) ) I'll ask now.

I'm curious about the specific changes that will be made. For example, I tried a wallpaper but now find I can't go back to the dark, minimalistic wallpaper that came with the CTMod. I can't seem to find that particular Theme in the zip file ? Is there a Theme for that?

In looking at Guspeed's Themes it looks like you need to download one for the main screen and one for the keyboard... does that mean those are the only screens affected? Would the keyboard Theme be overlaid on the Smart Keyboard Trail app i'm using?

CWhatever, do you have pix of your Theme? Does your Theme include all screens? I'd like to see it if possible.

And thx vce2005, for the Titanium info. You saved me a lot of time. Looking forward to the research.

I'll let you know how it goes. I wil get around to the more serious questions in time as I am noticing some "quirks" that are curious. But play first.... thx.

These are mine for 3.75 and can't be used when on 3.80, but they are pretty much the same.

There are some other things themed too never take pics of every little thing. I think the back to stock will put the original wallpaper back. The wallpaper is really not theming though, you can make that whatever you want.

From the official Titanium Backup web site ( Titanium Backup for Android ? Official Site ) :

Titanium Backup KB - Titanium Track

That's the wiki, user guide and knowledge base !!!!

NICE FIND BRO!!! I am going to give it a read to see what all I don't know about this awesome app. :) Personally, I think it's one of the best apps ever made for Android devices. It would be interesting to see just how much time Titanium has actually saved me over the years I've been using it. Hours and hours for sure. :)

Thanks for sharing this. :thumb:

I'd say, it saved me days..... LOL ;) Alone the unattended restore ( paid version ) is worth the $7 or whatever it costs ! :)

Considering I've been using the paid version and the unattended restore feature since 2011 on (2) Prevails, a Marquee, HTC One SV, Asus Tablet, and my S3. Now that I actually stopped to take a look back at how much I've used that app, I'm in awe. VCE, the amount of time Titanium has saved me is mind boggling considering just how many times I've flashed new ROMs and restored my backups. I am up there with you in the days! LOL

Heck bro, I've got 3 phones and a tablet with it installed on it right now! Titanium is used daily on 2 of those devices.

I wish Titanium had a built-in feature to show their users just how much time their app has saved people. Man oh man..... talking about a selling point! Wheweeeee!! LMAO!!!!!! :D

Yep, running daily backups during the night with Titanium, and use once a month Kouma's "Odin Image File Creator 4.00" and save it to the comp....... Never failed to restore with both ! ;)

Odin Image File Creator :

It's soooooooooooooooooooooooooo good, I actually "donated" to Kouma !! I just love it !

Man..... I sure wish the dream team were still together and working in the S3 section. Shabby, Kouma, Blood, Hroark13,Trench, Inigomon, Monster, Mavrik, Skater and all of those guys. Gee freaking whiz man. We would have it made. :smokingsomb:

Right now we are pretty much running all Sprint ROMs for Touchwiz. We do have Sprint as well as the unified builds for some of the AOSP based stuff. I've gotta admit, we're really not hurting at all for ROMs. It would just be really nice to see all of those guys back in one section again doing what they do best........ working together, kicking ass and taking names!! LOL!!!!!!:D

That's cool that you donated to Kouma too bro. He deserves every penny and then some!! He and the others Devs don't get the credit they deserve IMO. People who use their work should donate to them more often. They are doing this stuff for free but many people forget all about that. They have no flipping idea what all is involved in making a kernel or a ROM. If they did they would be coming out of their pockets more often. Not bragging or anything but I've donated $60 in the past 2 months. The guys I sent it to deserved it and I would have sent more if I had it. You wanna see some nice Touchwiz ROMs that are absolutely amazing? Check these 3 out.

Wicked Sensations- [ROM][TW4.3][MK3] ヅ Wicked Sensations Rom Final Release✭myHUB✭Clock Mod✭Awesomeness✭ - xda-developers

Project-X- [ROM][MK3] PROJECT X v4.3 [Team Rejectz][3/24/14] - xda-developers

MOAR- [ROM][MOAR][MK3] v9.0.1 / 50+ Mods / Morphology / On the fly mods / Killer [3.9.14] - xda-developers

Wicked Sensations is on its final build and Dazed, the developer, has given Ryan, the dev of Project-X, permission to use the mods and other stuff from Wicked Sensations. The new ROM will be called Wicked Project-X. I'm definitely stoked about this one. I've ran both ROMs and they alone are awesome. The combination of the 2 will be out of this world bro!!!!!!

PEACE.

I guess, it'll be time for me to get a S3 or S4 or S5 ( when it's out )..... but the money is always short.... too many other things to get and buy..... LOL

Hey wetbiker...... yah need to get your wetbike ready in case the "big one" hits, so you can ride on the tsunami quicker inland !!! Grinzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I wish I still had my Wetbikes. I sold then years ago. The only bike I'm getting wet on now is this one. :D

WB, your bike is gorgeous. I love the purple, and your shorty pipes look mean as hell

Thanks Kouma. I have to replace the fuel petcock valve. It has a diaphragm on the back that has ruptured. When the motor is running I have a small drip of fuel coming out of it. Being a rider yourself, you know that isn't a good thing at all.

I went to Harley Davidson in Bakersfield yesterday and picked up a new 1. $90 + tax....... OUCH! I am gonna drain the tank in the morning and install the new petcock. I have to admit 1 thing..... I like the new one. It has been improved and looks a lot better. I'll have my baby on the road by noon and I'm stoked!! :D

Have you been doing any riding lately?

Is there a way to disable the specific tone that comes from searching for "network signal" without having to just put it in silent mode? I'd still like to hear notification sounds.

I've noticed that when I run Pandora with Bluetooth enabled for a few hours, something strange happens. Although Pandora coontinues to play, and Bluetooth says it's on and connected, there isn't any sound. When I try to disable Bluetooth and re-connect, the phone freezes... causing me to reboot. This has happened 4 times since I rooted the phone. I can't remember if this ever happened B.R. Before Root. :)

Any thoughts?

can anyone help with the last two questions??

To be honest, i believe you are the first to report this problem (i may be wrong, but a search didn't turn up much)

You don't happen to have a different Bluetooth headset you can try do you?

Edit-you didn't by chance remove the music player that came with the rom did you? Music.apk is needed for Bluetooth to function properly.

No, I haven't deleted anything from the Ctnod setup. I have used both pandora and the music app. I don't have a headset... I play the music from the phone using Bluetooth to play through wireless speakers. I used the phone and speakers the same way before the root. Wondering if it's a ram issue.

I ride almost every day. It's just that much better on gas. $15/week vs $5/day in the car is a no brainer. I've taken to alternating between my bikes since I had a battery go bad in my 150cc
