Root Galaxy S Rooted (THAT WAS FAST)

Hi guys,

I'm planning to move to an Android phone from the iPhone once I can get the cash together. I'm liking the Galaxy S but have read that Samsung have a poor track record of updating the OS. I don't think they'll update beyond Froyo.

If I buy one and root it, does that mean I can install future versions of Android on it as they are released, or only if someone in the community makes a version specific to the Galaxy S?

Also, my other alternative is an HTC. Which manufacturer do you think is a better choice?

i would go for the galaxy
i have the galaxy i7500 and i like it very much, before i had my galaxy i had a htc diamond and it was the shittiest phone ive ever had.
a nokia 3310 is 10 times better then a htc phone.
mine broke down and because it had microsoft mobile it wasnt worth calling at all, but except the os it was getting scratched very easily and the touch screen stopped working after a while. The battery woudlnt last longer than 2-3 hours and the speakers on the phone really werent made for listening to music and for calling not any better.

so i recommend the galaxy
 
Hey Guys,

I'm familiar with the concept of 'jailbreaking' for iPhones and its inherent benefits (e.g. flash through Cydia apps, UI customisation).

But could anyone help me out with the reasons as to why one would ROOT an android phone besides the fact that you can upgrade the OS without having to wait for your manufacturer to roll out the official firmware?
 
Dear rooting experts - if I did root could I install the stock dialer and contacts app from the nexus one? I realise this could require a good bit of command line action. This doesn't worry me but would like to kjow if this sort of thing is possible and relatively common. Thanks.
 
Just out of interest, do people root their own phones? Or is it the sort of thing that I could wander in to the Carphone Warehouse or O2 shop to ask about?
 
I have a rooted HTC desire, so I'm not sure how relevant any of this will be (sneaking through these forums researching the Galaxy for a friend).

Since I have rooted my phone I have installed an app called "Rom Manager" which allows me to flash ROMs by running the app, and it takes care of the rest for me. I have Froyo running with Sense right now, but have a saved ROM on my SD card for 2.1 with sense and another with stock Froyo, I can switch between the 3 as I please (it does reset my phone however)

As a rooted user you are able to store apps on the SD card whilst running 2.1. The full app is stored on the SD card, and this works for all downloadable apps, whither or not the developer has set the app to allow this in 2.2

I can also take screen shots on my phone using an app that requires "Superuser" (root) access.

EDIT: Rooting will void your warranty, so don't go into a store discussing it. Be sure to be willing the void your warranty or have a backup of your ROM ready to restore to should you need to return your phone within warranty
 
Why is it taking so long for a custom firmware to be developed for the SGS? My feelings, like many (although of course subjective) is that this phone has great hardware but is let down by TouchWiz. If there was a way to disable that I would be overjoyed. The phone has already been rooted, so how long do we all expect it to take until this happens?

Which I guess ties in with my concern about support for Samsung as a brand compared with HTC. If this phone had an 'HTC' sticker, would the custom firmware have started appearing sooner?

Give it some time. Some people don't have the Vibrant or Captivate yet. I for one am waiting for the Fascinate. I'm getting into the development stages of a ROM, but I'm not as good as the rest. Give it a bit more time, everyone seems to be focused on the (lockdown) Droid X.

EDIT: As a matter of fact I may make the move to Captivate.....not sure though.

I think they'll go to Gingerbread if not beyond because the Galaxy S is going to be Samsung's huge phone this year. They're going to sell a lot of these.

But yes, it means that you don't have to care about Samsung as much. You'll be able to put on custom ROMs with future versions of Android even if Samsung doesn't have a release out yet.

is rooting 100% safe?
does the phone have any chances of bricking during the process?
please advise me am a potential SGS buyer but am a bit skeptical about samsung's post-sales support
 
No it's not 100% safe, but rooting the Galaxy S is easy and your bootloader is unlocked too(if I'm not mistaken) so hacking the Galaxy S is really a breeze. Just read before you do anything.

Remember to be very wary of pulling your battery when flashing something, especially if you're flashing your Radio or SPL. That's the main way people brick their phone. I also don't flash anything without at least a 50% charge.

My G1 was the first phone I really hacked...pretty damn scary but I had no issues. If you do have any problems, you always have great communities like this one or XDA to help you out. Now it's no big deal, just read before diving in.
 
Hi, I found this one-click root program by TGA_Gunnman from the XDA forums. Would it be safe to use it on my GSM Galaxy S? My country requires a sim card for all mobile phones
 
After I've rooted my SGS, is there any chance for it to restore back to the original ROM? Or upgrade to the official Froyo when it is released?

Same question from me... Is there a posibbility that I can't upgrade to Froyo after applying this root and Can I get everything back if needed.
Also Samsung is announcing Froyo update to be one-click :)
