Root Galaxy/Stock android on behold 2 - It flies!

Hi gang,

I'm completely new to the smartphone scene, but thanks to a talented, young IT-guy at my work, I'm in business. I have the Behold II running Galaxy. I'm just providing this is a brief record of what went down when I changed things around.

The scary-looking OS change from the annoying-spinning-cube went off (almost) without a hook. I used the instructions from this webpage.

The Installation

The only thing that was "iffy" was the last line of the Fix MMS Issues instructions (included in the following):

adb shell
su
rm /system/app/Mms.apk
cat /sdcard/Mms.apk > /system/app/Mms.apk

The "cat /sdcard/Mms.apk > /system/app/Mms.apk" returned some kind of error that I was foolish enough not to save. But everything feels okay... so far.

Thoughts?

Now the Issues

The camera is begging for a firmware upgrade, but it appears to be working. Like everyone else, I can't do any vibratin'. More irritating, though, is that I can't use the awesome voice recognition keyboard called "Talk to Me Keyboard". When I try to open it, I am returned the following error:

Google Voice Recognition:
Unfortunately, your phone does not have Google Voice Recognition. As TalkToMe Keyboard relies on this recognition, we recommend that you return this application for a full refund.

RESOLVED: After some searching (which ended up here), I was able to download the two files I needed to reinstall. Now all the voice-recognition works. I wonder why those aren't available on the market...

I think all the other base-functionality is working: WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and AutoSync. However, I can't figure out how to choose the WiFi network I should be joining. Any more thoughts?

Phone Info and the Firmware Question

I can see that there are many ongoing questions about what the future holds for those of us that can't stop meddling with our crap long enough to enjoy it. :) Here's what my phone is saying about itself:

Model Number: Galaxy (a blatant falsehood now, right?)
Firmware Version: 1.5
Kernal Version: 2.6.27

I'm not posting this (not merely) to beg for aid, but just to provide further data for those of you with the real talent that makes this stuff happen. I hope there's something useful in it. I'm very interested in getting that voice-recognition back. I'm thoroughly impressed with the speed my phone exhibits. I think it's worth a few snafu's along the way.

All the best you you all and have a great weekend,

Matt

Matt:
All you need to get the voicerecognition is to install VoiceSearch.apk (I believe). You can go to the following link: Eclosion For Android and you will see a link for the voice search apk.

ok this is weird ..... its stuck on the stick together screen. If i get this working ill make a video for you guys. Cuz theres none on youtube.

Wow guys I bricked my phone and couldnt get it recognized by the pc. It was crazy lol. I tried using ODIN on my hp and it didnt work kept crashin and wouldnt recognize. So i hooked it up to my Dell PC and It instantly recognized it. Im guessing my phone likes USB 2.0. My hp is USB 1.3 and its newer than my dell but whatever. I still had problems at first though running ODIN so i decided to run ODIN in xp sp3 compatibility with Admin Privs and it worked. (Im running win 7) Im happy my phone works now but I still cant seem to get Galaxy Working. I think im gonna try it again today. Ill let you guys know what happens. Im Determined. I just hope i dont brick again lol. Oh and Sorry for Being a B**** earlier if I was. I know you guys have been working hard on these projects. Thanks. Oh and if you guys didnt know. Im a complete Noob at all this. But I Love computers and stuff. Just never really had to use SDKs or input codes.

Edit: you know what guys I think Im going to try it one more time before I goto bed lol. Wish me luck!!

Hey Guys. Guess What I Got it Workin :-) :-). I really dont know why it decided to work now all of a sudden. But It works and thats all I care about. Thanks Guys. Now If its ok with Kam And MrAndroid Im gonna make a youtube video to help all the rest of you guys out. Becaus im not gonna lie there was acouple things I didnt understand when I was going thru this but I got it now.

Wow guys, This OS is Beautiful and Fast. Its Definitly Worth it. Alright Guys Later. If You guys want a Video, Ill Start on it First thing 8AM Est time. Im gonna redu the whole process again :-) :-). I need to get some sleep tonight lol.

Sure a video would really help.

BTW brick means its DEAD, usefull only as a doorstop or a brick. It doesnt mean you screwed up the software and havnt fixed it yet.

When you use terms like BRICK like that in the wrong context you scare people into thinking they will brick their phone with this process. Thats not really possibly.

Ok I have an interesting question. I installed the ROM now when I go to www.wf.com (wells fargo) I get the header for the site and then..... nothing. No login options or links, or content from the site at all. I odin back to factory and the page loads fine.

This is redick, there hasn't been any progress on this phone for like a month now. No vibration fix, no samsung camera app, no kernel change, and most importantly no android 2.1. This is very disapointing, I love this phones hardware, but the software and it support sucks! Come on guys we can do better than this, lets get crakin' on cookin'! I would do it my self but I'm not as gifted as some of you are. If anyone is willing to guide me in the right direction on how to fix these problems I will do my best to help. I know some of you have the brains, but don't have the time, which really sucks lol. If I would have known this phone was going to be stuck on a no longer supported android 1.5, I would not have gotten it:(

I need some help. I have the drivers installed but for some reason when i do adb devices it says

error t939 offline

I really want to do this today so any help will be great.

Hi. I have problem with MMS instaltion. "rm failed for /system/app/Mms.apk, No such file or directory" What I'm doing wrong? I have all the files from -http://shrunk.me/BH2-GALAZY-MMS-FIX.zip in my C:android/tools folder and in the phone sd card. Can someone can help me. I can't send or receive any text or MMS in my phone.
Thanks

if it it says no such file or directory you have already deleted it. Move to the next step.

RE progress:

The next step is to replace the kernel. I need someone who is willing to risk bricking their phone to progress. I dont have a behold 2 and never have had one so I can't do it. If anyone is willing to take the risk let me know. You should ASSUME you're phone will get bricked. If thats not ok, dont do it!

We had a couple of people before who had backup plans to get their bh2 replaced, but unfortunatly they didnt wait and listen, and randomly flashed things on their own which bricked their phones :(

I have several ideas, but without a phone to try it on there's nothing more we can do for now. The vibration fix is too much work for little reward. We would need to identify all the depenancies and probably patch the libraries. After all that work it would only fix vibration. It wouldnt help us run 2.1. Switching the kernel is the futureproof way to proceed.

Also please remember we don't work for samsung, so dont _expect_ support or updates. This is all for free and for fun! I dont even have a galaxy anymore nevermind a bh2. So this is 100% purely for fun.

Thanks for reply. I'm stuck in the: adb install Mms.apk -can't find 'Mms.apk' to install-
I have Mms.apk in my C:android/tools folder. but is not working...what I'm doing wrong?

if the galaxy recieves 2.1 or whatever, cant we just install it like we did with the 1.5 from the galaxy. Why all of the sudden would we need to change the kernel???

HELP! i flashed my BH2, and all went to plan except it seems like a few things didn't successfully install. when i go to the homescreen, it is missing market, browser, maps, the digital clock widget, and contacts won't boot up. without these things im pretty dead in the water, any ideas on how to fix it, do i have to Odin it and reflash over again?!?

try factory reseting by using the recovery...shut off...volume+call+power...then press home+power....then menu+back, once done, take out battery and power back on!

When you say bricked, are you saying send in for repair or just reflashing back to something else? I have both an bh2 and an n1 so I can experiment and test on one or the other at a time.

paul89: If samsung release 2.1 then we don't need to replace the kernel. We can just modify the system as we have here. If not then 1.5 is the latest android version we can run on the bh2. Other reasons to replace the kernel are to add features like a new scheduler and tethering. Without replacing the kernel we will always be stuck at the android version samsung have released.

rone: brick means send in for repair. Its a very plausible outcome, but of course we'll try to do sensible tests and prevent it. You should still assume that it'll be bricked because that way you can really asses if its a risk you are willing to take.
Previously we had people who were in their return period or had insurance and multiple phones.

Atmaji108: you have the mms.apk in the same directory as abd? Just to be 100% sure before you run the adb command type: dir mms.apk

if it doesnt show the mms.apk its not in the correct directory. Or do dir mms.* Its possible you have named it mms.apk.apk (windows hides extensions if u have the setting set)

Thanks. Now is working. I just misunderstood. Mms.apk should be in the directory where is written on the adb not where is adb original file. My last problem is with power button, it is not working, I can't cancel phone call or just return to home screen. Where I can set up this to work. Thanks
