Galaxy Tab concernes ...

Galaxy Tab WiFi-only model hitting Best Buy for $499.99, Sprint 3G model on sale November 14th? -- Engadget

$500.00

Of course, without the mobile functions, you'll need to decide if the price difference between that and an Archos is worth it.

If the Archos had a captive screen, then I would think about it. Im going to wait till they come down. The EVOs are already coming down so Im sure by tax time these will too, and other tabs will be here that actually might show the Android GUI.

Yep, the Archos 70 and 101 are capacitive. The 70 also has a 250Gig version (Tho exactly how useful it is is being dabated), i'm going for a netbook size so i'm getting the 101.

The main issues with the Galaxy Tab is you must use a proprietary cable for data and charging and has no media space built in. 16gb iPad is a far better buy at same price IMO and I hate Apple. No way Samsung maintains these price points and remains competitive.

I am not an OpenHardware fan, so I don't really care if it uses proprietary cable instead of mini usb, as long as it works its fine for me..

Btw, the iPad is far from a truly tablet device, the ipad size are likely more similar to a netbook instead of a tablet, the Galaxy Tab has the size of a truly tablet that u can easily take with u everywhere. iOS its a truly pain in ass, u can't do anything that Steve doesn't like u to do, it doesnt have flash, u cannot create or organize folders, share files through LAN or bluetooth, u cannot print over wifi, u can't do anything rather than playing silly games and surfing web (without flash). Well, unless if u don't jailbreak it ofcourse. Although I am really tired with the all jailbreaking scene, tired to have to wait months to be able to upgrade my fw version if I dont wanna use the jailbreak, tired to not know what exactly the exploit does into the system, and the list goes on and on... I am not an Apple hater, I been using mac for the latest 7 years, but I think Apple should have only focused on Mac computers and OSX instead of investing the most of their money and devs into mobile platforms. Well, clearly Apple isnt what it was back to 7 years ago.. Now it became rather a fashion brand instead to a company who used to make efficient computers.

How about keeping your old phone and use stand alone slate like the Archos. The Galaxy Tab is rather redundant if you already have a working phone and you'd end up paying for two phone packages.

On the other hand you can just get a non-3g slate and connect it to the phone via bluetooth.

So the thing you have to ask yourself is if you want a phone tablet that can do everything in one package? or a multimedia one that can tether to your existing phone anyway (And not get awkward holding a clipboard to your face)

And regarding the resolution.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zasSIA7sexM

It's not really an issue since most apps are designed to fit any of the myrad of cellphone sizes. There are some apps that are specifically designed to work with a single resolution and the android specs says that the device is supposed to add black bars around it. The fix simply tells the OS to ignore specs and resize the app anyway. Worst case, this gets the same effect as an iPod getting force fitted on an iPad.

And one of the commenters is an Archos user that apparently implied that his tablet has spec compatibility disabled by default.

Thank you for the hints, but I don't really like Archos tablet, I feel the Galaxy Tab its just what I need right now :).. A cool tablet that can also be used as phone, just in case ;) .

If the connector is USB on one end, shouldn't one be able to tether it to your phone, i.e. droidx (not rooted). I've got a phone, and only need the wifi version. We have an IPAD, it's just too big and doesn't do flash. I'd mainly use this for web browsing for my work, that's pretty all I need, methinks.
Also, when does the darn thing actually come out? When will the wifi version be available, especially at Best Buy, I wonder.

Not to turn this to an Archos tab discussion, but what is the major difference that you are choosing the Galaxy Tab over the Archos. Im looking at the Archos because its the same price basically, with LOADS more storage.

Ability to go online from anywhere mostly. I already have a smartphone and not interested in paying for another dataplan. So getting a Galaxy tab would be redundant for me.

I've already been tethering for our netbooks, laptops and iPods. So it's not an issue.

I wouldnt mind going online anywhere but I can on my phone. And most places I want to get online has wifi. And with the EVO, if I need or want to, I can share 4g with the tablet. Like if I know I will be somewhere I cant get wifi for an extended period of time, I might do that with sprint for that month.

For $250 I don't see anything coming close to the Archos 70 for bang for the buck

  • 7" 800x480 Capacitive Screen
  • 1GHz Cortex A8 (TI OMAP 3640-probable according to UPMC portal)
  • 3D OpenGL ES 2.0 Graphic Accelerator
  • VGA webcam
  • 8gb Flash + MicroSDHC Slot (40gb max)
  • 802.11 b/g/n
  • USB 2.0 + USB Host via micro B/A adapter
  • BT 2.1 EDR
  • HDMI via mini HDMI to HDMI
  • Accelerometer
  • Stereo Speakers and Kickstand

With my Overdrive I'll be set. I'll need a case like Sprint made for the Overdrive and iPad.

Well, first of all, archos tab cannot be used as phone, second the galaxy tab even if its a bit more expensive it has got front facing camera, which will be good if skype will include video protocol on android (hopefully) and, its samsung man :).. I havent heard anything of good about these archos tablet, but this doesn't mean they are not, its just my opinion. Btw, I had my galaxy tab for almost 24 hours now and I am really happy about it, maybe the best purchase I have made in the last two years :)

If you are not going to put many apps on your device, you are correct. If you are a medium to heavy app user (especially games), the Archos products are a BAD choice. You only have about 200mb of device storage. Even with apps2sd, that will be gone quickly.

I have an Ipad, had a Dell Streak, and am considering a Galaxy Tab.

The Ipad is great, love good reader for my PDF files, etc

The streak was ok, but 1.6 and the long wait for a update turned me off so I sold it on craigslist.

I seriously am considering buying a unlocked version and moving my iphone sim card into it, from what I read it would run on AT&T.

You guys think that would work?

Sorry, but that makes no sense with the apps2sd comment. I've got quite a few apps on my epic including 3 or 4 games with nothing on SD and I still have room to spare. So if I have half that on the archos with the ability to move apps to SD I don't see the argument.

And I'm sorry, but is there a reason why skype wouldn't work over wifi on the archos? If I already have a very capable phone I still don't see a reason to spend an extra $150 upfront and $360/yr for a toy which is all these 7" pads are even with the higher res of the galaxy and slightly better specs. You're out an extra $510 the first year to go Samsung, and with most of us having very capable phones, it's a waste of money. Give me a 9-10" tab with 720 or better res so it can be a bit of a notebook replacement with an added keyboard and you venture out of the toy/luxury category where I could see paying a premium. Otherwise, I just don't see it unless you "need" an always there connection.

And the galaxy tab is only a phone with skype here in the US. My phone is ALWAYS on me. I can't imagine wanting to use a tab as a phone if I don't have to and can't imagine a normal situation I'd have to use one as a phone that could justify $510 yr one and $360/yr after on top of my $70/mo phone.

Epic has twice the device space of the Archos products. Ratio on average for any apps2sd push is 40% on the device storage and 60% on the sd card. Not seeing how that does not make space a problem, but have at it!

Due to the 256mb ram and the fact that Archos stuffed the OS, UI, codecs and device space on the 512mb nand rom- NO WAY it will get the tablet oriented OS from Android. Bet on it.

So no one here is seeing the fact that neither the Galaxy Tab or the Archos can be used as phones in the US, both the Tab and the Archos 70 have a front facing camera, Skype is available on most Android devices in the US, and the Archos has a 250gb hard drive. Really, Samsung? And Archos sold out really quick.

A few thing to consider.... The Tab can SMS and I am sure it will have phone (VOIP) within a few weeks once the dev's have some time with it..

Also, it remains to be seen how effective that 250gb HD will be.... AND the Tab can GPS without needing a wifi connection... Some wont care if they hotspot it off a rooted cell phone, but I do not want to carry 2 devices...

I am sure phone function will be available on the Tab in some shape or form... The Archos will be an automatic no go due to wifi only....

I am not saying the Tab is better than the Archos but they are different animals when it comes to what you are looking for and will use it for...

Archos aslo has a very, very bad rep when it comes to build quality... Maybe this has changed with the new devices but that will be answered in time...

I am personally going with the Tab since I mainly sms and email... I rarely use phone function and when I do I can use my home phone or my OnStar.... If someone figures out a way to VOIP on the Tab then that will be the icing on the cake for me...

Lastly, the Archos has 256 memory and the Tab has 512... The Archos does not meet Google specs for future OS upgrades and the Tab does....

It all boils down to what you want to use the device for and what you want in a device.... I went back and for between the 2 and finally decided on the Tab...

I guess sms's are data now, not phone. That is interesting. I also overlooked the 256meg RAM, good call there. I guess Im sitting on my hands again on this one.

I went back and forth for weeks before I finally decided on the Tab... The main reason I was waffling back and forth was because of price...

I finally decided that if price was not a concern, which one would I get.... The easy choice after that was to get the Tab....

Yes I wish the Tab was cheaper but if I am going to spend the cash, I might as well get what I really want and not have any regrets later because I chose based upon price and not options.....

People that want a tab as a primary phone are an extremely small niche. A majority will already have a very capable smartphone if not an android phone. The fact I already have a very capable android phone means I don't need to duplicate all of the apps on my tab. Cardio trainer? Like I'm going to strap a 7" tablet to my arm as I go for a run or mount it to my bike when I ride. That's just one example. So 60/40 phone to sd storage is fine by me with 256mb on board. As I said with everything I already have on my phone I have well over 100mb left, and I have quite a few apps I haven't opened in quite a while on top of the ones I don't need to duplicate..

Do I care much about the latest android version? I most likely won't have it long enough to care. It'll hit ebay when the LG comes out. And I can sell it without reprecussion because I'm not under contract dropping $360 a year on top of the $400 I spent for the tab, paying for an always on signal I don't need. Again, the Archos can do about 80+ percent of what the galaxy tab will do for $150 less up front with no monthly costs. Enjoy dropping $760 year one for the toy on top of the $700 or so you're paying a year for your phone.

And raqball....skype is voip. Why would devs need to work on an app that's free in the market and will work on either tablet?

And how "effective" the hd will be? What the heck does that mean? Like their pevious HD pmps don't work? Their previous android pmp's have hard drives that are ineffective? Sorry. Statement makes no sense.

And where did you read you can do SMS on the US versions of the tablet? I've read the ones that are true phones (oversea versions) can do it, but I highly doubt a 29.95 sprint data plan gets free texting. Maybe through google voice if that's even possible. Unless you know something most of us don't.

Unlimited SMS / MMS is an included feature in all the carriers data plans for the Tab... I thought this was already a WELL KNOWN FACT....

What will you use the 250 HD for? You will need root or Apps2SD and even then, I don't know why such a large HD would be needed on a 7" Tab...

The Verizon Tab is already locked down to their version of Skype, that will not allow normal skype calls... I am sure the others will be as well... I also thought this was a WELL KNOWN FACT :shrug again:

Archos 70 & 101 are the best option due to price point and feature combination, but if one of these two things is a big priority- stay away:

1. App storage on device is only 200mb. Apps2sd is really PARTIAL apps2sd and the ratio is about 40% device and 60% sdcard. Medium to heavy app fans will run out of space quickly. No way to argue otherwise, since absolute. Galaxy Tab has EIGHT times the device space, but has no free internal media space.

2. Audio fidelity fans will cringe at the weak audio quality due to them adhering to the Euro sound cap law, but also an uncanny ability to not correctly manage the gain curve in relation to the low dB output. Weak, undefined instruments and shallow sound stage.

Summary:

If you are a light app user (or do not mind app juggling) and not picky on the fidelity of your music, the 70 or 101 would be the best choice. They can not be touched for price and feature combination.

While Archos has had knocks in the past about sound quality, reviews I've read from the past few PMP generations have all had positive things to say about their SQ and that it has improved quite a bit. I'm sure if you're listening to FLAC files over a pair of westones you can pick things apart, but you could say that about quite a few players out there.

And again, I'm at 512mb with well over 100mb free with no app to SD. So at 400mb total (including apps that won't go to the tab, at 60% I'm still at 240mb which is still plenty. The average consumer will never notice. Maybe when more tablet oriented apps come out, it could be an issue, but most of you early adopters will be ready to move on by then anyway. Well maybe not, you'll be stuck under contract pay an extra $30/mo.

Bottom line, if you're a complete app junky and need an always there connection then go ahead and spend the extra money. Someone said elsewhere, there's a reason why the wifi ipad outsells the 3g one. I'd rather spend that extra $360 elsewhere than on a second line essentially for something that is basically a luxury toy.
