Gemini Calendar - my vision of calendar software

Multi-day creation from monthly calendar drag inputs a day later than entered.

1. Press hold, then scroll across from Monday to Friday on the Monthly calendar. (from 9.20 t 9.24 for example, note this is reported in orange text (add event from 9.20.2010 to 9.24.2010).
2. Release and note date range in event editor.

Expected: Event spans Mon 9.20 to Fri 9.24
Observed: Event spans Tues 9.21 to Sat 9.25

I just downloaded the new update and it looks like the notifications are being disabled correctly, I'm only getting one notification from the default calendar and Nudnik is not being adversely affected any longer. Yay!

What version of Gemini are you referring to ? If you have the latest version (0.9.36) and still have this issue, write to me at info @ gemini-mobile .com .

It is 0.9.37, what was just released to the market. I can't say for sure if it happened on the previous version, I didn't check.

Today I have released a new version (0.9.36), that should fix this problem. Do you have this version installed ?

Actually, I just installed 0.9.37 from the Market, and it seems to have fixed the problem. I check for updates almost daily; I must have been running 0.9.35 before, and you managed to sneak in two upgrades while I wasn't looking. You're a fast one!

I've experienced two notification problems. The first was the notifications-when-off one that everyone else was having.

The second was an infinite-loop problem when notifications were turned off: I would tap the notification, it would go to the blank screen, I'd press "Dismiss All", and it would notify me again a few seconds later. It started when I slept through a notification, right up until my next alarm; then, instead of showing both, it only showed the first. The "Dismiss All" screen was still blank. I fooled with the Gemini Calendar preferences until it fixed itself. That left notifications on.

I've turned it off again, now that I've got 0.9.37; I'll report back later today.

I hope this work with notifications is moving toward per-event alarm sounds and snoozing?

Weirdly, on-time notifications seem to be scheduled for 1 minute before the event.

Incidentally, I've noticed that we seem to be a critical bunch. As a programmer myself, I was afraid I would have to write my own DateBk6 replacement; I appreciate all the hard work you're putting into Gemini Calendar. There's a long way to go, but you're doing a fantastic job! You're one of the most responsive developers in the market. We may end up disagreeing on some things, but I promise never to get personal or insulting about it. If there's any money left after I buy groceries today, I'm sending a donation your way.

Hi Powell,

Just a quick confirmation on the Evo shortcut fix, on my device version 0.9.35 showed the problem, version 0.9.37 fixes it.

And I'll throw in my vote for adding in an option for the back button behavior to auto-save vs. delete. Although, if there was a third choice, I would select "Display warning message when pressing back button" that would show a pop-up to the effect of 'Press back a second time to cancel changes made'. Wapedia (free wikipedia app in the Market) does something like that and I don't find it obtrusive, while others might. I have found myself a) accidentally hitting the back button and deleting updates to a calendar item and b) purposefully hitting the back button to cancel out of updates to a calendar item. That's why I'd prefer the pop-up requiring hitting the back button a second time to cancel - it would largely eliminate a) while allowing the option for b).

Just my $0.02, thanks for the great app and continued updates!

i would like you calendar to live on 1 of my home screens but as shown in the first and 3rd picture. IE month view at the bottom and agenda at the top. When i try to change the preferences the default view is greyed out and i cant change it.
What you see on the first and third picture is the application itself, not a widget. To place something on your homescreen you need a widget, Gemini has three simple widgets, you can put one of them (or all, if you want to), to your homescreen. It will not look, however, like the Month View in the main application.

widget on the home screen, the one with the date to the left side. It shows my birthdays, events, etc. a couple of days in advance, but as soon as the day rolls around, when they would be classified as "Today's events", they disappear from the widget. I would have thought they would continue to show until the day was over.
Right now, Gemini widgets stop displaying the events, that has ended. So if you have the event, that ends at 5PM today, at 5:01PM you will not see the event anymore (in fact, you may see it, because Gemini pushes the widget updates rarely, to save battery life, but this is the idea). I thought that there is too less place on the widget to display events, that passed already.

One thing that would make this calendar even BETTER than Google Calendar would be the ability to auto-fill info from your contact list. I
Impossible?? I hope not... :D
As you have noticed already in your next post, Gemini has similar function (Add from book) which will be improved in the next versions. Thanks for your ideas!

One question that came to my mind: did you turned off notifications in the stock calendar ? As I mentioned before, Gemini uses common calendar database, where also alarms are stored. Those alarms, like other notifications (let say SMS'es) may be served by many apps in the system. If you do not disable notifications in the stock calendar, you will have double notifications and maybe some other strange glitches.
But probably you knew that already :)

I've turned it off again, now that I've got 0.9.37; I'll report back later today.
Let me know.

Yes, it is moving there. Of course, at this stage, notifications in Gemini are not mature and this feature definitely needs improvements.

Weirdly, on-time notifications seem to be scheduled for 1 minute before the event.
That is the Android O.S. problem I spotted on some devices. If I set "0 minutes before the event" for notification, on some devices it results in double alarms. I did not figure out, how to avoid this issue, so I decided to set it 1 minute before.

How often does the gemini widget push updates? I find that "stale"events linger there. It would be nice if running the gemini app would force a widget update.

This is exactly how it works - when you enter the main application, and then leave it, widgets are updated. Plus, there is a normal time scheduler, which pushes the updates every +/- 60 minutes.

First thing, I really like the app. It's nice to be able to do non-standard recurring stuff right on the phone. The look and layout takes a little getting used to, but it's growing on me.

Now for my requests:

I use the Busy/Free flag in Setting Profiles to automatically put the phone in vibrate only mode. For some appointments though, I don't want the phone silent. In order to clear the flag, I have to go to the website. Having a radio button to set an appointment to Busy or Free would be a great help to me.

I like having the time of the upcoming appointments in the 4x1 widget, but I like the icon with the date on the 4x1a widget. A hybrid of the 2 would be cool, even if you could only show 1 upcoming appointment.

Thanks for "listening!" :D

I hope it is fixed in 0.9.37.
So far as I can tell. Thanks!

Correct on all counts. Ihad already disabled the stock calendar alarms to avoid double notifications with Calendar Notifier.

You're making fantastic progress. This is actually better than I expected from a first implementation.

I remember you talking about that, but I couldn't find it in the thread. Hard to search from my phone. ;)

Perhaps that should be another preference? I've seen other apps that make special allowances for Sense or other UI extensions in their prefs. "Adjust on-time alarms?"

I have a feature request, one thing that I use VERY often is floating tasks. Sometimes there is a date I should do something, but if I don't check it off as "done", I want it to show up again the next day, as a reminder in case I forgot to do it. Right now I have to use a separate "to do" type app for that...(pain in the neck)...it would be FANTASTIC if Gemini would have that ability - I could get rid of the extra app!

Help,

I have a my touch slide and I just tried to install this app on my phone however, after it is installed, it force closes no matter what. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and it still force closes. I don't know why

I'm seeing a screen redraw issue with the square surrounding the dat and the blue highlight, they are both below where they have been on past builds. Also screen redraw is slow in general, sometimes appointments don't show up when first enetering a day, I have to switch days, waiting doesn't always help (see screenshot).

Also another feature request: Can you make the icon shortcuts different for each activity? I'd suggest keep the add event the same, replace the + with a mall phone for add form log and make a small contact silhouette for the add from book. I use LauncherPro, which lets me hide labels, and also I included these in the dock which doesn't have labels and I can't tell the difference between each. Not a huge priority but still :) I just attached a screenshot for this too, not like you need it but you can see what I'm doing and why a label would be helpful.

I would also like to add my vote for this as a future addition if it is doable.

And I don't know how I missed it before but checked out the copy & paste feature you mentioned in the latest changelog. Works great & has already been helpful.

Thanks.

I know this issuse:
As i see you have installed a theme on your device - that's causing the trouble
I had this problem myself one time, as soon as i got rid of the theme gemini looked fine again.

It's not a theme, it is a font as supplied via Samsung's default ROM system so it is a device compatibility issue. No other applications do this so this really is an issue with Gemini's 'theme' not my devices :)

Which brings up again my request for a more simple theme option. It was noted it doesn't display properly on a Dell Streak, I'm guessing there are other screen scaling issues to be seen too if you did a larger compatibility test. The app probably would be faster overall if it displayed without the gradient images in the UI and instead used simple color choices. You could easily offer more color options too and contrast/readability would be better as well. I can read the default calendar app's text much better for example. Again, things like the 'Gemini Calendar' text in the UI use up valuable screen real estate as well. I'd love to see a UI redesign altogether to condense and more efficiently use the space available on these small devices of ours :)

Hi Powell,

I may have found a bug (or a good user error!). I am a former Palm datebk 6 and Life Balance user. Both of these programs added some text into the note field on various records to enable advanced functionality (e.g. 'floating' events, custom recurring events). An example of this text is "##@@@@@CK@@@@@@@@@@@@". As it should, these 'notes' carried over to the 'Description' field in Google Calendar / Gemini Calendar. That's the history.

The bug is I can't seem to delete these through Gemini Calendar. These are the steps I take:

1. Open Gemini Calendar
2. Tap on record containing such text (e.g. a recurring birthday)
3. Menu -> Edit Event
3.a. [optional] On the "Recurrent event, edit:" pop-up, select "Only this event"
4. Delete the text in the Description field ('Longer description' in grey text reappears)
5. Tap 'Save'
6. Observe pop-up showing the event is saved ("New event...saved" or "Event updated ...")

After this I have observed three things temporarily:

1. The event is now gone completely from the day
2. The event shows on the day with the Description text removed [desired result]
3. The event shows on the day with the Description text still there

Within some period of time (sometimes immediate, never more than an hour), the event reappears on the day with the Description text still there.

I believe I'm using the latest version from the market, About shows 0.9.38.

Ok, I installed log collector however, when I open it Gemini Calendar isn't showing in the list of application in log collector. Not sure what to do at this point.

Just select "Google Mail" or "Mail", depending what e-mail account you use in your phone. You will be asked for the email address to send logs to, enter my address I posted above.

This bug was introduced recently with new database module... I am aware of it and will fix it in the next release, thanks!.

Thanks I figured it out at the same time you were posting. I just send it to you. I hope you can work it out!
