Gemini Calendar - my vision of calendar software

Love the Gemini app! Apart from anything, its white-on-black skin is much easier on the eye than the harsh white one that is standard for the HTC calendar.

I'd LOVE for it to be able to link up with Android Agenda Widget?

Also, I've noticed when a notification takes place, it comes up fine on the notification bar and with the right sound and everything. But when I go to the list, it's just a blank black screen with "Dismiss All" - I can't get to the actual event from the notification, and I can't even see it. I've looked on the Preferences menu, and can't see any way to rectify it.

Nonetheless, awesome app.

This may be a function of Froyo. I use both Gemini and the stock calendar and this started happening right after the Froyo update.

I don't like it, either.

I've downloaded the app and do like it quite a bit. One suggestion I have so far is in the My Calendars section. Please list the email address associated with each Calendar like the Stock Calendar does. It makes it easier to know which one belongs to which account. I also don't see a way to set the time for new events in anything but 5 minute increments. I would prefer the ability to type in the time manually as well. Unless I'm missing where that is available.

Next version of Gemini will cooperate with Agenda Widget and some other widgets. Also, it will be possible to send data from third party applications to Gemini (and make an event out of this data).

Other new features are coming too. Be patient :)

Thanks, powell. As we discussed privately a few months ago, it would be great if you provided an 'intent' to bring up the gemini 'add event' dialog with some caller-specified parameters such as time and date.

Great to hear that about Agenda, Powell.

Also, the situation with notifications has miraculous improved, somewhat. It now DOES show that notification on that black screen, but it won't let me go to the event when I tap it. Instead it says something like "Function not yet available."

Hi Powell,
I've been looking for a good calendar app/widget for my Android phone since I got it last week. So far I love the Gemini Calendar the most of all and lots of appreciation for all your efforts in this project!
I almost depend on a good Week View for scheduling work appointments and am really curious when this is going to be implemented. I noticed in this thread, that it was announced by you somewhere in May this year and didn't see anything about it afterwards. With this feature included, I'm more than happy to pay for the Gemini Calendar and till that time, I'm probably forced to use the native Android/Samsung Calendar interface...
Please, if you can, give me an update about this feature?
Thanks again!

Hi Powell,
Just came accross a feature which to me would be very easy to have. In my line of work, I make lots of follow up appointments with clients. These are irregular (as in not weekly or so) and exactly the same except for the date/time. Because I want to keep record of all past appointments in my calendar. Therefore I cannot just simply use the Edit function as it replaces the original one.
I believe more people would like a feature in the way of a 'Copy event' button next to the 'Edit event' and 'Delete event' buttons. With this suggested 'Copy event' button, you jump automatically to a 'New event' routine with all data except for date/time already filled in.
Hope this is clear enough and that you can use this suggestion?
Thanks!

Welcome to a new Gemini-user! (from a largely satisfied Gemini-user)
A function similar to what you've requested already exists in Gemini -- it's my favorite feature of the app and the major reason I'm a fan. I'm on a Hero (Sprint CDMA) but I assume this feature works for all Android devices.

To copy an existing event to a random (non-cycle/routine) day:
  1. In month view, tap the day of the existing event to display all that day's events above the month view;
  2. Press/hold the desired event to deploy pop-up menu with options "Edit event", "Delete event", and "Add to clipboard";
  3. Tap "Add to clipboard";
  4. Press/hold the desired day for the copied event to deploy pop-up menu with options "Add new event", "Paste from clipboard", "Paste from clipboard and edit", and "Erase from clipboard";
  5. Tap "Paste from clipboard" if all variables except the date are the same, OR "Paste from clipboard and edit" if you need to change the time or other variables such as reminder time, length of appointment, etc.
  6. VERY IMPORTANT -- Scroll to the bottom of the screen and PRESS "Save" or else you'll lose the copied event if you back-button out to the month view. (some of us are lobbying Powell for a preference to save by default when leaving this screen).

Simple, efficient, very valuable feature that makes Gemini the best Android calendar available (in the opinion of a Mac person who was a super-satisfied PocketPC user <rant>before drinking the iKool-Aid and losing adequate hand-held calendar functionality 'til finally, gladly dumping iPhone for the Android environment </rant>).

+1 for week view. But even more so for a Year View (selectable: ie, 2005, 1971, 2025, etc) in which a tapped month takes the user to the existing format/functionality of month view.

Thanks, again, Powell, for this excellent calendar app and all your attention to user feedback.

Good how-to from Circus on the copy/paste appointment.

After you "Add to clipboard" in #3 you also will see (at least it does on my Eris) a small clipboard icon at the left of the GeminiCalendar title bar to let you know there is something in the clipboard waiting to be pasted.

I like that Powell included this indication.

Ah! I hadn't noticed that before. Thanks, Bob_54!

Awesome app - just got my android for a week now and been searching an app that remotely close to Agendus from the Palm world or AgendaOne from the Windows Mobile.

One suggestion:
When you Add from the Address Book - it would be nice to now what phone # we are choosing from: i.e. if it is a mobile or home...Some of us are ADD and have not memorize somebody's phone number in years...;).

Hi Circus,

Thanks for your input regarding the copy event - this helps me a lot and another + for the Gemini app!

So far, the only (discovered) important missing feature for me is the Week View. Hopefully Powell can give some more info about the plans for this when he's visiting this forum.

Any chance, somebody can knows wether/how to change the default settings for New Events, e.g. Reminders -> Never? (I now have to do this every time manually and seem not able to find a way to change these defaults)

Just updated! Thanks for adding to save by default preference, much much appreciated! It does seem overall faster now, and being able to launch and view from widgets is great, thanks! Perfect update! I may actually start using the Location field now that you made it useful! Ver very nice!

p.s. I would still love a plain theme, maybe larger text options as well for my poor eyes.

Version 0.9.41 ready to download from the Market.

Changes:

  1. Faster month displaying. This is not the end of the general performance improvements, but I hope it is better already.
  2. Clicking Location field in Event Details displays the Google Maps. I will think of making it more obvious, now you have to know, that it is clickable.
  3. Gemini receives the text data from other applications. It works for every application that sends a standard SEND Intent, for example Google Maps or Note Everything. You must select the field, where you would like to have the text: Title, Description or Location, then set other event parameters and new calendar event will be created.
  4. Gemini works with 3rd party widgets, like Agenda Widget. Again, it depends on the Intents these applications send. You can add new events, view and edit existing events right from the 3rd party widget, providing the author implemented standard Android intents.
  5. Gemini should be visible for small screen devices like Wildfire and X10mini. Please, report any problems with such devices.
  6. List of calendars was totally redesigned. It looks better now.
  7. Back button configurable to save or cancel event. O.K., I have made it, as requested. I still hate the save function, but I understand, that someone may love it :p
  8. There are minor changes in the month view. Continuous events, that span the day, are better distinguished and displayed.
  9. Minor bug fixes in widgets.
As always, feel free to send me opinions and bug reports.
New features coming soon.

O.K., here are the answers to some of your posts.

This might be a stupid question, but can I turn off sync for the native android calendar, or is that how gemini syncs??

I receive many questions about "syncing" calendar data. I have made FAQ article on my site: FAQ - syncing.
If you have more questions, ask.

I occasionally work a pair of nights shifts from 22.00 -06.30. Previously when I entered one (eg starting the 16th) it would show up just on the 16th. Now it also shows up on the 17th but with the start time (22.00)displayed, and then when I enter the one starting on the 17th it shows up on the 18th, making it look as though I have another shift starting that day at 22.00.
I have changed this a little in the last update, let me know what you think.

Also, the situation with notifications has miraculous improved, somewhat. It now DOES show that notification on that black screen, but it won't let me go to the event when I tap it. Instead it says something like "Function not yet available."
Notification system will be improved in the near future.

As I have already mentioned, Week View is planned, but I do not want to make any promises in regards of when it happens. Please, be patient, I understand that this feature is important.

EDIT:
I have uploaded a new version, 0.9.42 with a widget 4x1a fix (problems with day view displaying).

I updated to the newest version and immediately ran into a problem with the widget. It now says that due to limitations all widgets display data from the same calendars. I had to roll back to an older version to get my widgets to display different calendars again. The new update is a step backward for me because of this.

You're doing an awesome job, Powell. I just have two questions:

Is there a snooze function for notifications? I'm sure I'm missing something.

Oh, and I'm new to the whole donate thing (apologies for having been cheap in the past with my apps :o). How much is generally considered a fair donation by people, specifically for Gemini? Just as a gauge? Is it $2 or $20? I have no idea.

Thank you so much for this app as it solved a critical issue for me in the default calendar app - reoccuring appointments every X days! Unfortunately I cannot say that I use Gemini 100% since it currently does not support sending the appointment to other contacts! I am constantly scheduling activities with many people, and not having this has me jumping back and forth between Gemini (for the reoccurance scheduling) and then back to the default (to send the meeting to others). On a side note, it appears that when folks accept my meeting (from the default calendar) their reply is not reflected in the meeting invite. Rather I receive an email with their response... This may be due to some of my users have blackberries, but neather here nor there.

Any plans to support appointment sharing/scheduling with others?

I have changed this a little in the last update, let me know what you think.

Thanks Powell, Unfortunately my Desire is back with HTC for a cure to a total freeze that a 'factory reset' wouldn't fix. :( I'll reload Gemini and check this as soon as possible

One cool thing about this functionality is that, although it's a little awkward, it provides the ability to move an appointment from one calendar to another. Just change the designated calendar in the inserted appointment, and remember to delete the old appointment.

I use the Busy/Free flag in Setting Profiles to automatically put the phone in vibrate only mode. For some appointments though, I don't want the phone silent. In order to clear the flag, I have to go to the website. Having a radio button to set an appointment to Busy or Free would be a great help to me.

I realize I'm quoting myself, but I didn't see a response to my request. Is this something that would be possible to add?

I am really appreciating the added support for the Pure Agenda widget, but now that I am using the Gemini day view I am really finding the font color contrast in the day view lacking, it would be better with white text, it just doesn't contrast enough for my eyes in most lighting situations. The text is too small even at the largest setting, it could be much larger. The link text color is hard to read because of the dark blue color is not high enough contrast. An nice feature would be the ability to click one of the fields like Alarms to open up in edit view with that field ready for editing.

Anyhow, it is getting there :) I can't wait for week view and whatever else you have in store.

Powell,

One widget request to add to your list and one I don't know if it is a bug or my phone causing a problem...

Widget request (or shortcut button), could you provide a single 1x1 widget like the left side box on the current 4x1a. The portion that just shows the month and date. Then have this take you straight to the day view. I don't know how I did it before but one time I pressed the left side of the 1a widget it came up in day mode. May not have backed out of the day mode the time before when I exited. Hard to say. Anyway I use CalWidget in a 4x3 mode on the lower part of my screen with four single button Gemini shortcuts across the top above it. The main Gemini shortcut, then add normal appt, add from book and last, add from log. This is what works for me. I'd just replace the add normal button.

The bug/problem, if it is one, is adding to the calendar from Astrid. When I choose 'add calendar event' in Astrid and press save I get the choice to complete action using 'Event details' or 'Gemini add|edit event'. If I choose Gemini, it loads ok. When I press save a box pops up that says "error while saving event." If I try again using the other selection it works fine.
Is this in Gemini, the way my phone is trying to do it or my settings?

Thanks

What happened to the ability to have different calendars in different widgets? Gemini used to be able to do that, but lost that capability in this latest version.

I don't know either. I'm a bit obsessive about my calendar (DateBk refugee) and Gemini, so donated $10. I think that $5 or so is appropriate for someone who is less of a nut about these things than I am.
