Help General questions/issues thread

This morning I had my phone in my hand (it was on but sleeping) when I walked into the bathroom - and since I was still half asleep, it slipped out of my hand as I was setting it on the counter and (of course!) it fell into the toilet. I grabbed it immediately and just because of the "EWW" factor, I ran it under clear water from the sink for a second. Yeah, maybe the 2nd shower wasn't the wisest thing to do, but I had just woken up and it seemed logical at the time.

Thankfully the toilet water was "clean" and doesn't have a chemical thingy in the tank so it was only exposed to clear water. After the 2nd quick shower I toweled off the phone and quickly took it out of the TPU case. The back always pops off (just the top section) when I take the TPU case off and there were a few small drops on the inside of the phone, I towel dried those off. Lastly I put my hair dryer on cool and dried it for a minute (I read online afterwards that you shouldn't use a hair dryer... oh well).

Phone is in my purse now and at work I'll put it near a small heater (not too close, so it doesn't get any heat damage) and after a few hours I'll see if it works. I don't have the patience to wait longer than that & everything important is backed up online in case the phone fries when I turn it on.... in which case I'll be visiting a sprint store at lunch or after work for a potential exchange.

Wish me luck, I'll update tonight with how it turned out.

Note to self: Don't carry phone with me in the bathroom when first getting up in the morning.... :D

I've owned the hero, evo, and now lte evo, and the HTC spellcheck still can't figure out this word, or have the ability to store words with an apostrophe.

You should try and remain patient and put the phone in an airtight container with rice covering it. It will draw out all of the moisture. But hey I understand the lack of patience lol Good luck!!

I'm hopeful it's going to be fine, when drying it or fiddling with the cover I bumped the power button a couple times (phone was powered on but sleeping when I gave it a bath) and the screen woke up and looked ok - but I tapped the button again right away to put it back to sleep. FYI when I toweled it off initially I didn't take the screw out of the clear plastic that covers the SD card, but I didn't see any water inside there, either.

Once I got to work I got to thinking that maybe I should try to remove the other 2 back pieces to see if there are drops of water in there but I can't get those pieces off and don't want to risk breaking them (I started with the speaker cover and it's on really tight). I figure since those sections are on so tight there's a chance it's dry under them, but I was able to pry open the speaker cover a little at the bottom and have been rotating that part of the phone & the top section to face the heater so both ends are getting air. I'm asssuming (very possibly, incorrectly) that most of the important electronics are at the top?

I don't use my phone for work & am a light user, but I like having it available when I want it & have no backup phone, which is why I won't give it more than a couple hours. Worst case scenario is that I have to exchange it and do some stuff to set up a new phone - I can live with that if I have to but still crossing my fingers (and shaking my head that I did this.... lol) :o

With all the features my fancy new Evo has, I can't seem to find a way to make it left-handed friendly! It's annoying that "done" and "send" when composing text messages is on the right side. I can't seem to find a solution to this, which probably means there isn't one, but I thought I'd ask you expert Evo users before I give up. :p

TIA!

As someone who has been a loyal HTC customer since the days of the Touch Pro II it's been an often frustrating last....almost 11 months. I've had the TPII, Hero, and Evo 4G before moving to the LTEvo when it rolled out last year. I have had some issues with those previous models but nothing like the issues I've had with the LTEvo. I'm on my 3rd phone since buying my original when it first rolled out last May. I'm now having issues with this 3rd phone and am weighing my next move. I wanted to see what kind of feedback I get from the rest of you before I go back into my local Sprint store. The issues I've had with these 3 phones are as follows(most of these have happened with at least 2 of the 3 I've had).

  • Proximity sensor stops working intermittently. I then have to use the power button to "wake" the screen up to interact with the phone during a call.
  • I get "Invalid packet" messages when trying to download app updates sometimes. This particular issue only happens maybe every few months but it's still not something I've been able find anyone else who's had it happen to them.
  • I get complaints from people that the call quality is so bad when I'm moving during a call that I have to stop and stand still so they can hear what I'm saying.
  • The signal quality/strength at work, where I use my phone extensively, is the worst of all the previous models of HTC phones I've had. It's so bad at times that it goes into roaming. That was never the case with the previous models. Thank god I have Sprints simply everything plan!
  • Sometimes I go into my texting app and find that a text or pic I've previously sent has been duplicated and is sitting in the compose window. I have to delete it before I can send a new text. This has happened with multiple texting apps so it would seem to be a phone issue rather than an app issue.
  • My phones have intermittently rebooted themselves.
There are a few other issues that I think may be app related so I won't list them here but clearly I've had far more issues with my LTEvo phones than most other people seem to have had.
I am not someone who has dropped their phone alot. I have a lot of downloaded apps on my phone(50-60 at any given time) but I've yet to find any reports of that many apps causing problems. One of my first 2 LTEvo's was replaced by Sprint due to a bad board. I can't recall what they said was wrong with the 2nd one. That was a bad day all around.

For all the issues I've had I still wish I had a good working LTEvo but am not feeling really confident the 4th one I believe they will want to move me too will finally work as well as it seems to be working for many people. As I see it my options are to:

  1. Try a 4th LTEvo
  2. Insist on being moved to a different model which I know will be limited to what Sprint decides to offer me.
  3. Keep this current phone and just live with it's multitude of issues.(Most definitely not the option I'll choose).
  4. Pay out of pocket for an HTC One or Samsung S4 once they are released. Unfortunately I can't afford this option right now and probably won't be able to for months at the earliest.
  5. Go with an older model of phone(Evo 4g, Samsung S3, or a similar phone that would be a step backwards in terms of what they offer). Not an option I'd be happy with considering how much I paid for my LTEvo.
I didn't list rooting my current phone as I don't believe that would fix all or even most of the issues I listed. Please correct me if I'm wrong about that.

What would you do if you were in this position?

Thank You for any advice given.

It sounds like a few of your issues could be network related rather than phone related. I'd start with giving sprint a call and seeing if theres any network upgrades going on around you. If not, submit a work ticket and they'll send a tech out to that tower and make sure its functioning right.

The proximity issue is a known bug. Its software related and I think they have a fix out for it by now . Sorry, I'm used to rooted ROMS, where the issue has been fixed for months.

Sprint has a policy where I believe after 2 "lemons" they'll offer you a different phone. The S3 would be considered in the same "tier" and that would possibly be an update. I have experience with both, and they both have their pros and cons. If you can wait a few months maybe they'll offer you the One or S4.

Some of those issues "may" be corrected with a factory reset. It's worth a try.

As far as getting multiple lemons, it's the luck of the draw, or maybe your local store has a bad batch. This does happen, and remember it's not Sprint that produced a lemon, it was HTC.

Take Rx's advice and talk to customer service. Network Vision is wreaking havoc in some markets, so maybe your area will be getting LTE soon. :)

I know you! :)

I definitely can relate to the network issues, especially at work! All those suggestions sound great to me.

Contacting Sprint and arranging for a test of your radios has been suggested a number of times. The fact that the antenna seems to be in the back cover and doesn't always make good contact with the phone has been mentioned, as well.

I read where one guy had some sort of signal strength app and lit it off and squeezed his phone in his hand and saw if the signal improved.

Hopefully Sprint IS working on your towers and will be done soon and you will have GREAT signal!

For signal, update PRL and Profile in that order, see if it helps.

If lost packets are happening on wifi, you may have a router issue.

Install Wifi Analyzer, free, swipe to the page showing the signal graphs, strength vs channel. Are you on the same channel as others? Is your router using the default name, same as your neighbors? Being on a unique channel and using a unique name can improve wifi throughout your house.

If lost packets were happening on the Sprint network, the PRL and Profile updates very well may help that as well.

Random reboots indicate a rogue app (buggy, doesn

Been having a lot of problems lately with insufficient memory. It's beginning to become a problem because it's interfering with my car app and bluetooth headset. Any tips?

I think its time for a new battery (for me).

Fully charged: 7am
Usage: very minimal
Battery warning: 1pm

Conclusion: Not acceptable. Anyone know where i can purchase a brand new battery? Ebay or Amazon doesn't seem to have any.

Are you talking a new battery for your Evo? And then dismantling your phone and replacing it yourself?

You are a very brave man! :)

Edit: won't let me post the link.

If this is your newer phone, then I'd start running battery diagnostics.

Something may be wrong, easily fixed, but not by a new battery if it's something else.

Start with GSAM Battery Monitor.

Is there a secret to the folder structure used for pictures? I have my camera app set to save pictures to the SD card, but when I delete a photo, there are multiple thumbnails that still hang around.

Is there any way to make the thumbnails auto-delete when I delete a picture? It's a little annoying to be digging around in the phone and trip over a picture of something (or someone ;)) I deleted a while ago.

So with the update to google maps I think the people app integration is broken.
When I open a contact and click on their address I get only telenav, not google maps. I don't get the prompt for which app to use. And I checked app associations and mine is set to Maps for Maps and Physical Address. I tried to change it to Chrome for Map address but that didn't make a difference. Telenav still opens up and there is no choice like there used to be.

Anybody resolve this?

i dont understand the issue then.

'course im on the htc one but that should not make a difference but, isnt telenav (the blue arrow icon) and google maps integrated? so when you need to plot directions, its all in the google maps app.

maybe explain further your issue? because from what it looks like to me, if you want navi or to see the map where the location is, its now all under google maps?

You're thinking about the Navigation overlay to Maps.

TeleNav is that other one -

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.telenav.app.android.sprint

Could maybe uninstall TeleNav, ensure everything works, reinstall if you like it.

Failing that, uninstall Maps updates and reinstall Maps.

Failing that, it's sounds like time to backup, factory data reset and restore.

I can't think of other options, maybe someone else may.
