Help General questions/issues thread

Uninstalled telenav, no change.
Uninstalled google maps, which didn't really go away. Then it auto updated to the latest version again. No change.

I'm not going to restore, I think it is just an issue with the new maps that will get fixed with an update from either google or htc. There was supposed to be contact integration in google map searches but I can't seem to get that working anyway either. If I get that I won't have to search in the people app.

I just wanted to see if anybody else that was stock had the same issue.

As someone who has been a loyal HTC customer since the days of the Touch Pro II it's been an often frustrating last....almost 11 months. I've had the TPII, Hero, and Evo 4G before moving to the LTEvo when it rolled out last year. I have had some issues with those previous models but nothing like the issues I've had with the LTEvo. I'm on my 3rd phone since buying my original when it first rolled out last May. I'm now having issues with this 3rd phone and am weighing my next move. I wanted to see what kind of feedback I get from the rest of you before I go back into my local Sprint store. The issues I've had with these 3 phones are as follows(most of these have happened with at least 2 of the 3 I've had).

  • Proximity sensor stops working intermittently. I then have to use the power button to "wake" the screen up to interact with the phone during a call.
  • I get "Invalid packet" messages when trying to download app updates sometimes. This particular issue only happens maybe every few months but it's still not something I've been able find anyone else who's had it happen to them.
  • I get complaints from people that the call quality is so bad when I'm moving during a call that I have to stop and stand still so they can hear what I'm saying.
  • The signal quality/strength at work, where I use my phone extensively, is the worst of all the previous models of HTC phones I've had. It's so bad at times that it goes into roaming. That was never the case with the previous models. Thank god I have Sprints simply everything plan!
  • Sometimes I go into my texting app and find that a text or pic I've previously sent has been duplicated and is sitting in the compose window. I have to delete it before I can send a new text. This has happened with multiple texting apps so it would seem to be a phone issue rather than an app issue.
  • My phones have intermittently rebooted themselves.
There are a few other issues that I think may be app related so I won't list them here but clearly I've had far more issues with my LTEvo phones than most other people seem to have had.
I am not someone who has dropped their phone alot. I have a lot of downloaded apps on my phone(50-60 at any given time) but I've yet to find any reports of that many apps causing problems. One of my first 2 LTEvo's was replaced by Sprint due to a bad board. I can't recall what they said was wrong with the 2nd one. That was a bad day all around.

For all the issues I've had I still wish I had a good working LTEvo but am not feeling really confident the 4th one I believe they will want to move me too will finally work as well as it seems to be working for many people. As I see it my options are to:

  1. Try a 4th LTEvo
  2. Insist on being moved to a different model which I know will be limited to what Sprint decides to offer me.
  3. Keep this current phone and just live with it's multitude of issues.(Most definitely not the option I'll choose).
  4. Pay out of pocket for an HTC One or Samsung S4 once they are released. Unfortunately I can't afford this option right now and probably won't be able to for months at the earliest.
  5. Go with an older model of phone(Evo 4g, Samsung S3, or a similar phone that would be a step backwards in terms of what they offer). Not an option I'd be happy with considering how much I paid for my LTEvo.
I didn't list rooting my current phone as I don't believe that would fix all or even most of the issues I listed. Please correct me if I'm wrong about that.

What would you do if you were in this position?

Thank You for any advice given.

I thought I would come back and update the status of my phone & it's issues. Bear with me as I'm having issues with multi-quote. User error issues I'm sure!

First as to the advice some of you were nice enough to offer......

@Rxpert83

"It sounds like a few of your issues could be network related rather than phone related. I'd start with giving sprint a call and seeing if theres any network upgrades going on around you."

I have contacted Sprint multiple times over the last year+ about network issues and have gotten multiple responses pointing to my phone, the towers, and sprints upgrading of the network. My network issues started almost as soon as I moved to the LTEvo when it first rolled out over a year ago so I initially chalked it up to an issue with my phone but have now come to believe it was/is a combination of phone & network. My Evo never had an issue with going into roaming at work like my LTEvo has. I suppose it's possible the timing of moving into the LTEvo and Sprint beginning work on the tower local to the hotels I work at sync'd up but I couldn't get them to definitively confirm that. It's amazing sometimes how often one rep will contradict another.

"The proximity issue is a known bug. Its software related and I think they have a fix out for it by now ."

All 3 of the LTEvos I've had have had proximity sensor issues and 2 of the phones they replaced the sensor in. It's possible that there was a software issue as well. This 3rd one I still have is back to having issues even though the sensor has been replaced.

"Sprint has a policy where I believe after 2 "lemons" they'll offer you a different phone. The S3 would be considered in the same "tier" and that would possibly be an update. I have experience with both, and they both have their pros and cons. If you can wait a few months maybe they'll offer you the One or S4."

The list of phones they would have been willing to move me into if I would have decided to go that route is a short list. The LG Viper or Samsung Galaxy Victory. It wouldn't cost me anything but I've chosen another option as I'll go into at the end of this post. I tried for the One or S4 as a free to me replacement phone but they were having none of that.

@Granite1

"Some of those issues "may" be corrected with a factory reset. It's worth a try."

I tried a factory reset in late May and the phone seemed to work as new for awhile but the issues began coming back within 2-3 weeks give or take.

"As far as getting multiple lemons, it's the luck of the draw, or maybe your local store has a bad batch. This does happen, and remember it's not Sprint that produced a lemon, it was HTC."

Agreed, but 3 lemons in a row?? Plus I've had 2 Sprint reps tell me that the LTEvo is one of the most troublesome phones Sprint has ever dealt with. It has apparently become a big headache for them as they tell it. It's interesting that I've spoken to a couple of other people in social settings who still like their LTEvos and haven't had anywhere near the number of issues I've had.

"Take Rx's advice and talk to customer service. Network Vision is wreaking havoc in some markets, so maybe your area will be getting LTE soon."

Wreaking havoc pretty much describe the state of Sprints network here in San Diego and the surrounding area. I have multiple friends & coworkers who are with Sprint and all of them have seen their service get worse. Sprint has told me things that lead me to believe that the network has to get worse as they upgrade the equipment before it gets better. From the time I moved to SD in Oct of 2007 until early 2012 I had very little network issues. As a matter of fact, I would always tell people how great Sprint was as far the network goes because I rarely found myself dealing with dropped calls and almost always found myself with good coverage at times when friends with Verizon or ATT had crappy service. For the last year+ that has most definitely not been the case. I have seen 4G start showing up around the area but not in a consistent manner.

@dustwun77

"Hopefully Sprint IS working on your towers and will be done soon and you will have GREAT signal!"

That's the hope!

@EarlyMon

"For signal, update PRL and Profile in that order, see if it helps."

I've done that 2-3 times but with no noticeable improvements.

"If lost packets are happening on wifi, you may have a router issue.

Install Wifi Analyzer, free, swipe to the page showing the signal graphs, strength vs channel. Are you on the same channel as others? Is your router using the default name, same as your neighbors? Being on a unique channel and using a unique name can improve wifi throughout your house.

If lost packets were happening on the Sprint network, the PRL and Profile updates very well may help that as well.
"

The "Invalid Packets" thing is weird in that it doesn't happen all the time. It will happen then I might go weeks with app updates working fine. As for the router vs network thing, it's happened on both. At home, at work, on the road. I have not tried WiFi Analyzer.

"Random reboots indicate a rogue app (buggy, doesn’t have to mean malware), used by itself or in combination with another. For example, since the last app update to Boat Browser Mini, I can use it to reboot my phone at will just by over-selecting a url by sliding too far to the right. Any combination of using the Mini and Go SMS is another way to guarantee a random reboot.

That can also be caused by a storage or operating system cache issue, especially if you are saving a boatload of text messages.
"

All but a handful of the reboots have happened while using a gps nav app. At first I though it had to do with the universal phone mount in my car because one of the foam pads that secures the phone presses on the camera button. As a matter of fact, I have to press that side down lightly or it will actually active the camera when I put the phone in the mount. I seem to have rulled that out because the phone has rebooted several times when it was simply sitting in my cup holder while the nav app ran. As for the app(Scout which replaced TelNav), I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it but the reboot thing still happened.

As for the storage issue, I suppose that possible though I usually delete all my texts once a month, give or take. I never really let it get horribly full. imho of course. ;)

"Yeah, the Jellybean update hit many with the proximity sensor bug, but, if it's intermittent, then storage could again be the culprit. When on the phone, you're automatically tied to texts and contacts, so anything tying up memory could be a problem, like too many texts or your contacts database being a little snarky.

Make sure that your contacts are backed up to the cloud.

App management, Contact Storage, clear data, and let your phone reset its database from the cloud will eliminate that problem if you have it, clearing your text messages will help if you're storing thousands for no reason.

Failing all that, yeah, a factory data reset is a good idea."

It's possible that part of the issue with the proximity sensors is software related but as I previously said, they have replaced the actual sensor in 2 of the 3 phones I've had.

I sync all my contacts to Google.

Maybe a silly question but how do I reset my phones database from the cloud? Or do you simply mean syncing with Google periodically?

My texts never approach the thousands though I could easily see it getting that out of hand if I wasn't diligent about deleting them as much as my gf LOVES to text!

So all this brings me to where I am at now. After a new wrinkle where I plugged my phone into my car charger the other day and got a message saying something to the extent that the phone could not charge because it was using more power than the charger could provide I called Sprint. Keep in mind that the last 20-3 weeks I've noticed the phone getting hotter while charging than it used too. Anyway, after much consideration I decided that I would propose the following to them as a means of meeting halfway in getting me into a phone I felt was as good or better than the LTEvo. By that I mean the One or S4.

They make me early upgrade eligible and I sign a new contract and get one of the 2 phones I want.

They then transferred me to another department(Customer relations/retentions?) and after explaining my issues at length I was put on hold so the person could consult with a supervisor and when they returned I was offered the following:

They would grant me an early upgrade and as for the early upgrade fee you would normally have to pay they agreed to give me an $80 instant credit to my account, agreed to give me $93 dollars for my current LTEvo, and I would then pay the difference of $27. As for the new phone I will have to buy I can buy it from anyplace I choose. I found the One being sold by BestBuy for $99 and they said I could get a $50 credit if I bring in any phone that isn't damaged and that powers up. I have several old phones(my TouchPro, Hero, & OrigEvo) that fit that bill.

I have a few friends who think I should have demanded a free One or S4 for my troubles but I don't see the value in demanding something I don't believe they will ever give me.

Now I'm faced with deciding which of those 2 phones is right for me and I'm firmly on the fence.

If you have an opinion on that please let me know on the thread I started for that!

Thank You for all the advice opinions everyone!

Through XDA Dev's website, I found a proximity sensor app that seems to solve the problem (compatible with rooted 4G LTE's):

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.incredicontrol.ProxSensorCalibrator&hl=en

This post has info about changing a codec to improve CDMA call quality (I made the change, and had no negative issues):

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2137826

I agree, the signal strength on this phone is weak, you can try and gently pry/tweak your metal contacts under the removable back top cover to make a better connection - I followed advise on some other websites, did not break my contacts, but so no improvement in signal.

I've had the same issue with my texting app (previous text autofilled) - it doesn't happen to often for me though - seems to happen more often if I quickly exit the text app screen immediately after sending a text. I'm using Handcent.

Many here with weak signal strength complaints have found that they've had defective headsets, fixed by a replacement.

I've had the original Evo, the Evo 3D and the Evo Shift and my reception on the LTEvo is equal or better than any of them.

I'm sending this from a DMV office waiting for new license plates - with 1 bar on the meter. My other phones didn't work from here before, I couldn't surf the forums much less post back.

You can get the RF test done by Sprint. Call Sprint corporate, not your local store, and have them arrange it. Because corporate is watching, you get no nonsense and no arguments - just a test and replacement if yours is bad. Tell them that you want an RF box test.

Hope this helps! :)

When I start to type in a contacts name into the the text name field, it takes almost 10 or more seconds for the contacts name to actually come up. Any reason why it is so slow and what I can do to fix this issue? Pretty annoying.

hello.

that is not normal operation for sure.

if you have hundreds of contacts. this adds a slight delay. if you have low memory/ram this can also contribute.
its difficult to diagnose over the internet. but some questions will help:

are you rooted?

what carrier?

how long have you had the phone?

has it always happened?

if it just started happening, did you install or uninstall anything?

do you have live wallpapers installed or busy home screens with widgets, folders, etc?

fastboot checked?

soft reset help?

would you be willing to factory reset?

I also have the same issue happening when I send out a text and need to search for the contact. There also have been other things happening as of late:

1. When I connect the charger, the screen turns on

2. HTC file transfer doesn't run upon connecting to my Mac and the USB transfer doesn't turn up in the notification bar. I was able to do this a couple of months ago with my current 3rd party USB cable.

3. Proximity sensor doesn't function properly every now and then.

That's all, I think. Should I factory reset?

(Non ROOTED and phone was in Atlantic County NJ)

Over the past weekend several problems became apparent in retrospect:
-> Some text messages were delivered 3 days after they were sent (sending and receiving phones both Sprint in same community)
-> People called my phone (thought I had carrier or Airave signal(s), were immediately sent to voicemail, BUT I received the voicemail messages three days later.

Any thoughts as to what is happening? Are the network "improvement" gremlins at work?

sounds exactly like network vision growing pains.

if this started happening all of a sudden then it could very well be--and your symptoms, at least to me, seem to support this.

calling into sprint and giving them your area code(s) to the places you frequent, can perhaps shed light on this.

could also be a temporary issue with towers in your area.

Hey,

I moved text messages from my text message area( where you choose whom you text ) to a secure box (?) from the settings option ( upper right corner ) but now I can't find them. How do I retrieve them ? When I use the search button and type in the contacts name, I can find yhem but I can't find it anywhere else.

Must be something I'm missing......any help is greatly appriciated

:-D

My Evo decided to be jealous of the probable upgrade on Friday and chose today to bite it I think.
It was running fine, playing Pandora and just went quiet on me. Shutdown before I could even get it out of my shirt pocket. I have tried power button, hard reset multiple times (holding for over 60 seconds) without any response. Also tried 4 different usb and chargers without the red charging light coming on. Any ideas or pretty much out of luck with this one? Sadly will cost me almost 200 bucks towards my new phone since I had the buyback plan at best buy and I'm pretty sure a non-functional phone won't get me much money.

See if Sprint service can help.

I had a phone I thought was dead and yet magic beans (or something) sent through usb brought it back to life.

Don't suppose you had usb debugging turned on by any chance?

Not unless if was on by default, can't think of why I would have turned it on. My laptop and desktop both won't recognize it on usb so thinking I'll be phoneless for a day or two.

Was already leaning toward a Note 3 on Friday or Saturday anyway, guess it will just cost me more to make the switch. Luckily there isn't anything on my phone that can't be replaced or was on the sd card.

Well Evo LTE is officially dead, battery was removed at sprint store earlier with a serious swell on the face of the battery. Replaced with new battery and no dice, won't even charge and the battery was checked in the phone it came out of. Surprisingly easy to get inside the phone, just some careful prying and a LOT of screws to get to it, think a dozen or so to get all the panels off. It had been charging hot but had been doing that off and on for the last few months.

Guess I'm switching back to Samsung tomorrow, the store I went to is holding one of the 6 they got in today. It is a damn nice looking phone in person and surprised they only got 6 but it is a small sprint store across the street from Best Buy. But they are still going to give me 60 bucks for a dead phone so at least it's something more than BB's nothing.

I have an app "Notes" on my phone, and the files, and the data contained in each file, are backed up to my SD card "sdcard0". The question is how do I print the information contained on the card?

Thanks for your assistance.

If the files are pure text files, move them to your computer, open them in Notepad and print them.

If not, and you don't know what format they're in, you'll have to set your system up to print from the phone. I've found Cloud Print (free in Play) to work very well. It even handles my Kodak printer, which most apps don't. Then just tell the Notes app to share the note, and one of the choices should be your printer.

HTC apps are network printer aware. If your printer isn't on your network, set your pc to allow printer sharing.

In versions of HTC Notes I've seen, pull open the note, select menu (or 3 dots) and choose Print.
