Genuinely Terrifying Games

When I was younger I used to play Silent Hill around midnight with the lights out, curtain closed, and door shut... That was a bit frightening... lol

Had a $20 credit for buying Black Ops at Amazon and spent it on Dead Space. Just watched the trailer for number 2 and it looks creepy as hell.

No one has even talked about Alan Wake yet? Playing that was the most frightened I've been since RE1 and 2. It's not as much stuff jumping out at you (even though there is plenty of that) as it is being genuinely scared for your life. The damn shadow monsters continuously coming at you while trying to run away and kill every last one of them. Not to mention guns aren't how you kill them. It's the tiny little flashlight your carrying.

I'm seriously getting freaked out thinking about it.

PS. Dead space wasn't that scary, and was vastly overrated imo.

Alan Wake was a great game but it didn't scare me. Not in the least bit. As for your comment about Dead Space, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree against the masses. There's a reason why it won so many awards.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. CoP is probably the most immersive game I've ever played.

Reading your comments I'm tempted to give it another try. I loved the first game so much - everything about it was spot on, including the false endings - I played it through three times. But I've never been able to get into the prequel or sequel.

The Fatal Frame series get one from me.

The atmosphere is rather creepy, the setting, the music, and the visuals. When the ghosts get to you, they just pop out of nowhere and when you do look at it from your camera view, you get up close and see them. Plus, the ghosts themselves have their own back stories of how they got that way, and the setting itself has its own story tied to the main plot.

Wow I haven't played that game in forever, I completely forgot about it.

+1 for Doom in the dark with headphones on.
Bits of Half-Life were fairly creepy too.
I don't play games much any more, can you tell?

AVP 2, as the marine. Most probably wouldn't find it truly scary overall, but something about that pinging noise from the motion detector kept me on the edge of my seat.

You got that right. Both the first and second Aliens v. Predators are the only games that I could never finish because it was so damn scary!

If your pc can run CoP max graphics..

You are in for a very, very nice treat.

I want to play clear sky sometime soon.

I remember reading a complaint that CoP takes as much power to run as crysis and looks 1/4th as pretty.. or graphical.

I think they really didn't notice the subtle stuff.. The way the wind blows the grass.. or the way shadows splinter off in a realistic way with varying degrees of darkness based on the light.

CoP is one of those games you feel scared to play around midnight for a while.

Like any other game you eventually get use to it.. But, I totally enjoyed CoP. One of my top ranking games of all time.

I will admit.. it takes a little bit of effort to really get into it..

But, once you do.. you find yourself jumping when someone walks in the room.

I nearly had a heart attack when my girlfriend walked up to me one night while my face was glued to my 23" monitor..

I just saw her out the corner of my eye and litterally jumped to the side.

Her only response "that good?" XD

@Others:

AVP was scary for a little while as marine..

But, I grew out of the fear pretty quickly.. Aliens weren't nearly as horrifying as I expected..

but, playing with them was quite the treat indeed.

They could have made AVP so much scarier as a marine it wasn't funny.

I just found the flares over all useless.. and the A.I. did some quirky things that disappointed me long term.. had they made the A.I. a little smoother... it may have been a devistatingly frightening game.

I think they could have really played up the darkness a lot more.

Also.. the "meet team"

"team gets erradicated"

was lame. -.-

I totally agree, its a gorgeous game, much better than the original in the eye candy department. It was in other areas that it didn't hook me, For example characters and voice acting - a good example of what I mean is the start of both games.

In the original you meet the trader Sidorovich, he has a conversation with you, he acts and talks like a believable person cos they put a lot of effort into animating him, scripting his dialogue, getting someone who can act to do the voice, etc.

In CoP you meet Beard at the barge, he stands stock still and says something dumb like "Welcome to our swamp ice breaker!" and thats it - it just feels lame to me.

Also in the original, as you play through the missions a pretty good story unfolds. I didn't get that impression as I was playing through CoP and eventually just lost interest. But like I said before I'm probably gonna give it another chance.

DEAD SPACE has to be the one
that game is just scary especially if u play in total darkness in the middle of the night
JHEEZ

Dead Space is good for make you jump moments. The creepiest game I've played is Fatal Frame. After an hour or two of playing the game I was so immersed in it that I would walk around my house expecting to see what I saw in the game. There are others that are scary like the other Fatal Frame games or the Silent Hill games but for me none have freaked me out like the first Fatal Frame game did.

All I ever heard about Clear Sky was really negative. I decided to buy it on a whim one day because I have the other two STALKER games and wanted to have the whole series. The Complete mod is basically a necessity because it is a little more buggy than the other STALKER games, but once I installed it, the game became incredible. It isn't as polished as the other two games, but I have definitely had the most absolute shit-your-pants moments with Clear Sky out of all the STALKER games, and the firefights are incredibly fun. Just last night I was playing through a section with a massive battle between two factions and the sounds of all the AK-74's firing just out of sync with each other while the enemy fired back endlessly was amazing. No other game series has had me so engaged with the environment before. I love this series.

'Return To Castle Wolfenstein' Starts off as a standard WW2 shooter, gunning down Nazis and SS....but then there's one point it all starts to go a bit supernatural. The first bit in the crypt was definitely a little scary.

'Half Life 2' We don't go to Ravenholm........I'm not surprised.

And as Many have pointed out 'STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl' I don't think anyone ever forgets their first night in 'The zone'

'Metro 2033' Really atmospheric and original, another great Russian game.

Dead Space is crazy. I couldn't figure out how to repair the tram thingy, you know when you have to extend those long arm things to lock on and the right side keeps malfunctioning. All of a sudden, one of them bastards crept up behind me and scared the **** out of me LOL.

Lol, you should've sent me a msg on XBL. I could've helped you.

Another game that freaked me out was Condemned. The level where you're in a department store was the worst. I thought something was odd looking about the mannequins but I just blew it off. Then one of them attacked me and scared the hell out of me. For the rest of the level I was beating the hell out of every mannequin I saw whether it was moving or not.
