GetJar and Updating apps

Hi guys I'm new to the site but couldnt find the answer to this any where on the net.

I got Cut the Rope for Free from the GetJar market. I know the new update for it is avalible soon.

My question is as it is classed a a non market app how do i update it. It is not present in the market place update screen.

I have the htc desire Hd if that helps at all

Thank you

I sent them a tweet, I'll post if I hear anything.

Ok I got a response from GetJar...
"GetJar: Hi, a dev has to upload an update, and then you have to re-download it. We'll have auto updates in a few weeks."
"GetJar: When we roll out the update feature, yes, you will be able to get a notification."

If you check the developer blog on getjar's website, you will see the following:

"We’re really proud of this program, and are working hard to keep it going. We’ve got some really great site improvements, like auto updates, that will debut in the coming weeks to make not only Gold, but GetJar as a whole, the definitive place to get great apps."

Emphasis added by me. I was wondering the same thing, but I guess this answers our concerns.

what's especially annoying is that they don't even list the version numbers on the getjar store. so there's no way of knowing if they have an update without installing it. talk about fail.

case in point...
tunein radio app is at v5.0 in the market and stuck at v4.2 on getjar. just tried installing it again and i'm still on v4.2. very frustrating.

Hello...

I downloaded the GetJar app from http://www.getjar.com as they have been offering a bunch of FREE paid apps (100 or so I think, with new ones added every week) to download to your phone. It is similar to the Amazon free app of the day, however, I have NOT found any way to either (1) create an account/sign in to track apps and/or (2) be notified when a new app version is available.

As you know, if you try to update a, in the case, getjar "paid" app with either Amazon or The Market, you get the message that the app cannot be updated as it was not purchased at any of those site. Understandable and expected....

I searched the forums and found one thread addressing the above issue with no further information since October:

http://androidforums.com/android-applications/419639-getjar-updating-apps.html#post3279404

That thread mentions a GetJar developer blog that indicated a "beta" release of the getjar apps where users would receive notifications of app updates while using the getjar app. I found another blog at the getjar site that confirms this and explains to developers how users are alerted about updates. Here are the links:

Good News Everyone: Update Notifications For Android Apps Are Coming to GetJar GetJar Developer Blog

How To Update Your Android App on GetJar GetJar Developer Blog

Both those links indicate that users will be prompted that an update is available to a getjar-downloaded app in "version 3.5." I checked my current getjar app version: v3.5.10.325...above version 3.5 that should allow updating of apps but I CANNOT FIND where/how to receive update notifications...??

Has ANYONE been able to update getjar apps or receive notification of updated apps?? If so, what getjar app version do you have?? How are you able to do so??

THANKS!!

So here I go...perhaps the only Guide who often guides himself, answering his own questions!:D...

Seems that others with GetJar v3.5.xxx are getting updates. That I am not getting any update prompts on v3.5 myself might simply be because none of my apps have any updates at the moment!

So, I'm just going to sit back and see what prompts do/don't show up. But the word around is that v3.5.xxx does prompt users for updates.

...now if I could only "thank" myself for such a useful post!! :D:D

But it's free on Get Jar as opposed to the $0.99 you have to pay on the Market. Besides, v5 added nothing over v.4, which added nothing over v.3, and so on. All I noticed is that they changed the logo, same old app inside.

Unless an early version of an app is broken, updates are usually overrated.

I just uninstall GetJar when I'm done downloading whatever app from it... I don't like getting the ads that otherwise come with it. The "My apps" section of the app is blank on my phone.

Interesting...are you referring to "ads" when and INSIDE the GetJar app itself or are they "notification bar" ads?? Couple months ago I traced some notification bar ads to a preschooler type app that I installed (and UNinstalled) for my son. But I noticed a couple notification bar ads again and haven't been able to trace them...perhaps the are from GetJar?? Is this what ads you are referring to??

The "My apps" section of the app is blank on my phone.

I had thought...after some confusing on my part thinking, as you might have, that the "My Apps" tab would do that: some a list if MY APPS that I have downloaded. Nope. It appears that that tab is only for "sharing" your app information with others through, I think it said, Facebook.

Same.

And to the OP, I have also never been prompted with update notifications for any of my apps, and I have downloaded at least 20 apps from there.

Can I ask when/what date you first installed GetJar and your 20 or so apps?? Reason I'm asking is because I'm probably good for a solid dozen to 15 and I have not received a SINGLE update notification either. I believe, however, as amazing as it may sound, that NONE of my apps currently have updates available.

Still, kinda odd....no list of apps that you've downloaded through the app like with Amazon and The Market....no version information as far as I saw at the GetJar "store"/app download interface...etc...

Good point! I was looking at a couple of the posts regarding GetJar and was kinda amazed. But then again, that is just the way that consumers are today. No offense intended.

I just came to Droid from BB a couple weeks ago and about three or four days in, I found GetJar. While I was surprised that there was a "market" offering pay apps for free, I was not surprised to see that the updates were not part of the deal. Just like ssjTrunks said, I am happy to have the app for free in the first place. Would I like an update? Sure. Am I upset about not having one? No.

Point being is that when the updates come out, many times they are just minor fixes and rarely offer major changes to the program. If they do change the program, I bet you anything that a little patience will prove fruitful as we will most likely see something on GetJar soon enough. Plus, they did mention that they are working on the auto-update feature. When it is ready, we will know.

I am personally just happy as hell to have the ability to get most if not all of my apps for free as compared to App World over on Blackberry! I cannot tell you how happy I am to be over on the Android side right now. Everything that I could possibly need my phone to do, it does. And then some. And with the addition of places like GetJar adding to the fun.. well, I cannot ask for more!

So lets all just chill and be happy with what we have. And have some patience. It will come in due time.

Hi guys....

Posting this in case this old-ish thread is still being followed...

I had similar questions about the GetJar app providing updates to users for their apps and found the answer to the question in another thread which you can read starting here:

http://androidforums.com/android-ap...d-apps-free-right-now-getjar.html#post3777435

:D

Adding a little info at the link above by quoting myself....

Basically, my understanding is if you have the current version of GetJar (which is v3.5.10.xxx) then you should...should...receive prompts when you launch the GetJar app that updates are available for apps that you downloaded.

Now some of us on the latest GetJar version have yet to confirm this. I have a dozen to about 15 apps from GetJar that I have NEVER had a prompt to update. I believe UssjTrunks indicated in another thread that he has 20 apps and has never had a prompt either.

Now are the updates not working for myself and others on v3.5.xxx???....not sure. It is possible that NONE of my 15 GetJar apps currently have updates available??...it is possible, but not too likely.

Its just odd that some people have been getting prompts and others haven't. I heard nothing about this being some sort of "rolling" functionality....as with an OTA software update where some people get the update prompt one day and others a few days later...

Yes. I did some research before even trying GetJar to make sure it was even safe, or if it was another warez market with potential viruses. There was a lot of talk about it having push ads. As a matter of erring on the side of caution I just keep it uninstalled unless I actually need it.

If you're currently getting push ads, I recommend getting AirPush Detector, or even better, Addons Detector to check what app is the offender. I just reinstalled GetJar and ran a scan but nothing came up.

With the previous offending app with push ads from a few months ago, I was able to see what was causing it IMMEDIATELY because as the ad was loading, the top of my blank/black screen's notification bar area said the actual NAME OF THE APP!! So that was easy...and since I didn't have it before or since (until know), I had no need to search for your AirPush and Addons Detector suggestions.

So, since you scanned GetJar and got nothing, I'm off to find out who's pushing ads to me...thanks again!
