GetJar and Updating apps

Just wanted to add to the discussion (if anyone is interested/following) regarding the "automatic updates" of apps with Getjar. I emailed getjar a few days ago asking about how/when/where the apps are updated and received the following response from "Brian" at getjar:

Thanks for all the great info and help. Not too many ppl out there would go through the trouble of finding out.....but I appreciate it!

Ive been using GetJar for a year or so now and have never received any update notifications.....I just flashed a new ROM and such, so have just re installed GetJar, so hopefully I will start to get the updates!

Hey M@31...thanks for the thanks!! Very much appreciated!! :D In this case it was me helping me helping you guys as I was every bit as interested in an answer as others! ;)

And now I wish you and me some updates to see if the thing is really working! :D If I track some getjar apps in other "markets" and find that versions are changing but I'm not being alerted, I'll drop a note to the Brian guy over at the site now that I have a ticket number and his email I can reference and will report back.

Take care...

I wanted to mention that in order for updates to occur on GetJar, the way I understand it works, each app's developer has to first go to the app's setup page in GetJar and enable and keep up with application updating. It is possible that developers just aren't doing that and that's why there are no updates.

I have installed several applications from GetJar and I as far as I can tell, I have never received an update through it. Also, when I go to the "My Apps" tab it is completely blank. Weird. My apk version is 3.5.10.325.

Mine is "blank" too. As I stared at the space where my apps would be listed, all it waid was "Login to see what your friends are downloading", and I wondered if the lack of an apps list had anything to do with me not connecting GetJar to Facebook - maybe that's how they identify your "account" for keeping track of which apps you've installed? Then I found this page, where the GetJar chief executive thinks that "what users care about is what their friends are downloading".

I don't have a Facebook account, and I don't want one. If that's how they keep track of, I guess I'll never get an update via GetJar.

I do have a Facebook account and saw the opportunity to "associate" or talk with my friends about the apps I have. Not only do I NOT want to associate my facebook account with this app, my friend could CARE LESS what I'm doing :D

I mentioned in a previous post that since receiving a message from getjar tech support I have the email address to one of the guys over at getjar so I'll reach out and ask about the facebook connection and if this is the ONLY way to keep track of apps. If that is the case, then this is not for me either.... :(

I will share info when/if received....

Thanks. Please keep us posted.

Sorry guys...been incommunicado for a few days....20 month old with 103+ fever and ear infection last week and NOW my 4-year old with ear infection as of today...weeeeEEEE FUN STUFF!!:eek:

Anyway, emailing the getjar guys now with a couple questions. If I get a response, you all will be the first to know!:D

If you need any answers about GetJar and can't get them from tech support let me know. Bill Scott (Senior VP) gave me his personal number and email address and said if I ever had any questions about GetJar just to ask him.

Thanks...and just saw your reply to my PM as well...but noticed after I sent an email so we'll see what response I get.

Hey...haven't forgotten about you guys. I sent a message on 1/19 to the guy at getjar who replied to my original inquiry but as of today, 1/26, I have not received a response. I re-sent my questions today....

If I don't get a response, I might take chrlswltrs up on his offer to get in contact with an exec at getjar who gave him his contact info.

Awaiting a response....

My impression is that getjar gives away older versions of paid apps. I just downloaded a few and all the ones I checked in the market had updates available, but I couldn't get them from the market. I consider it a tradeoff for getting a paid app for free. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm never able to update them --- but as long as they work, no big deal. If it's an app I really care about, I'll just buy it.

However, I could be totally wrong on my presumptions. Here is a relevant thread on xda with some good insight: Free apps from getjar.com - xda-developers
