Root Getting incredible soon. Best rom/way to root

Unrevoked reflash tool is our root method. Best Rom right now IMO is Cyanyogen Mod 7 nightlies believe it or not. Gingerbread with most Cyanogen settings already working. There are some other great Sense roms and ports as well. Tons to choose from.

Follow one of the many guides on here make sure you read everything and take your time.

Agreed with Cm7 if you want a sense rom try out virtuous. I just love sense even though I use launcher pro which is a downside but with cyanogen I almost want to start using adw which is the built in launcher for that rom.
 
Unrevoked for rooting the phone.

I personally like MIUI, it has been very stable and everything works really well.

Last time I checked cm7 has some hardware issues (camcorder related I believe).

+1 for Unrevoked.
You don't need to flash a new ROM right away if you would rather take small steps at first. And when you do change ROMs, Virtuous is great to start with (and also makes a good reliable daily driver).
