Root Getting ready to root... a few clarifications please.

Got an Evo 4G a few weeks ago (my first android device), have been reading for a while and am getting ready to root. I'll just be rooting at first, won't be flashing any roms right away. I'm at 2.2, full phone details at bottom. I have a few random questions from my reading if you don't mind:

1) In the dummies sticky, it mentions in the 1st paragraph "Those of you who ROOTed with unrevoked 3.3 may be having trouble FLASHing custom ROMs to your device. This is why ([NOTICE] ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0+ and update-script - xda-developers)."

Donut seems to be pretty early code... does this affect someone rooting with the current unrevoked on 2.2?

2) The dummy thread says there is a slight chance you can permanently lose 4g. If I use this method of backing up my wimax key before rooting, will that allow me to always recover 4G in the event I hose it?

3) Is it suggested to install HTC Sync, then uninstall, leaving the drivers... or just don't install it at all and download the drivers manually? I have not yet installed Sync on my PC.

4) Sprint will never push an OS update to my phone without my permission/activation, right? I want to stay on Froyo until there is an exploit for 2.3+. I don't want to wake up one day to find my phone got updated overnight.

5) I've read threads that say you cannot re-root after unrooting. These are just for people who updated to gingerbread while rooted? If I stay at 2.2 I can un-root and re-root to my heart's content?

6) Not really a rooting question, but if I activate Option 2 for google voice integration (existing GV account takes over phone), does my current Sprint number also ring if they call it instead of the GV number?

Thanks for any replies or advice.

Evo 4G
Device Build Number: 3.7.651.1
Android Version: 2.2
HBoot Version: 2.10.0001
unrevoked Version Used: n/a yet, assume 3.32

1.so the main thing with clockwork mod 3.0.0.5 is that it uses a script called edify which is what google switched to in gingerbread. however, most flashable .zips are still in a script called amend. the only recovery that is compatible with both is clockwork mod 2.6 and amon ra 2.3(the one i recommend) you can get them here http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html. however, i have'nt used unrevoked lately, but i think that unrevoked went back to using clockwork mod 2.6.

as far as affecting using unrevoked, you are good to go.

2.yes as long as you save them on your pc or somewhere else you can definitely recover them if they get lost. that is an interesting way of doing it. never used that method but that is very cool.

3.it suggested but not necessary to install sync. if you have trouble connecting your phone with your computer then you may want to try it. but it does not hurt to do it anyways.

4.correct. you can even turn off the scheduled update check. settings/system update/htc software/uncheck the schedule check. now you do not have to worry about your phone asking you to update or not.

5.if you unroot and accept the latest ota, then you can't re-root your phone. there is currently no exploit found for the new hboot the ota would install. so you can unroot, just do not accept the ota and you can easily re-root your phone.

6.i could be wrong but if you link google voice with sprint then yes. i currently do not use google voice.

1. Actually, google switched from amend to edify back at donut. Now the dev community is finally making that switch mandatory. that issue should not matter anyways, use AmonRa instead, it is much better

2. yes the method you are thinking of using would work to preserve wimax keys, however the root process does not actually touch the wimax partition, so there is no need to do that backup before rooting, you can just do it once you have AmonRa installed

3. sync is more trouble than it is worth, just install the drivers separately

4. That is correct, but there is no need to stay on FroYo, there are many rooted GB ROM's out there. The problem is with the new HBOOT included with the OTA. Check out XDAforums for all of the choices of ROMs to flash. I use CyanogenMod7, much faster than the stock ROM.

5.Also correct, but unless you need to take the phone back to Sprint, there is no need to unroot.

6. You an actually port your sprint number to GV now
