Root Ghost in the machine 2

Hey Crew,

Been lost in space for a while and while out there stuff started happening to the EVO.

After typing the subject I saw that several others used the same subject and one actually asked about the same issue: spontaneous boot on and boot off. I read the other Evo entry. It didn't seem to answer the question.

It's not always the same. They're all annoying but the most annoying is when I get a low battery warning and I attempt to quickly turn her off. It seems to take forever ( ever since switched rom's < I think that's the word > and was advised to turn off quick boot it takes forever to turn on and to turn off ) But after waiting all that time for it to boot off because the battery is in the RED; with-in seconds it starts to reboot on. It freaks me out since I was told to " never allow the phone to turn off because the battery is too low or you'll lose ??? the rooting the flashing, the data? I'm not sure what I will lose but I quickly attempt to turn it off. On a few occasions I managed to plug it in to a charger )

So now there are other issues. I'm not sure that they are related or separate. After it boots, the screen does not react to touch. After a while I get a message informing me that HTC touch function is not working; force close. I do that and things work. Sometimes calls drop and the screen once again doesn't work. A dismiss message appears and then things sorta get back to normal.

All of these glitches are happening more often.

This week I got new batteries thinking that might help. They didn't.

I ran a virus scan and it is clear. Maybe the rom is getting corrupt?

The other thought is that " space is low " warning comes up from time to time. I keep deleting apps that I do not use much. I'd like to delete the app for the Navigation app that is no longer supported. I can't seem to find where it hides.

Sorry to post with several problems. Maybe the each need their own individual post?

Several things come to mind, but I guess the first question for me is do you know what Rom is currently on your phone. It could be you have a troublesome rom that never had all the "bugs" taken care of.

One possible quick fix might be to clear the caches through your recovery, but I suspect you have the older Clockwork version that I would recommend changing. We can do more with that as we move along and find out more about your issues.

It' not good to let the battery die on you, but your data and root should be ok. Also, if your rom is a ICS or JB rom after rebooting you should give it another 5 minutes for everything behind the scenes to finish loading.

We'll get you fixed up as you give us more info and all will be good ;)

not sure who told you about not allowing the phone to shut off due to a dead battery.....you will not loose root or data anything else. it is not great for a battery to be completely drained, but again it will not really do anything. if it is dead for an extended period of time then you will have a battery that can no longer recharge, but that is the extent of the damage......so i really would not worry about that too much.;)

like biker57 has asked, what rom are you on? what kernel are you using? did you try wiping dalvik cache and cache?

if you are running out of internal storage, you might want to think about partitioning your card and then you will never get the low storage notification ever again.

I went back to my old posts to see which ROM I have.

Does this sound right?

Good to see you got the rocker issue fixed and you have Amon RA 2.3 recovery. Translation: Your recovery is Amon RA 2.3, which most of us find to be the best.

Go here and download the Odex version. Next go here and download VR Superwipe. Put both files on the root of your sdcard(top level, not in a folder). Translation: Download them to your sd card. (which you have done as they are in your download folder) Move them to the top level of the card (cut and paste from the downloads folder to where you want them)

This is the link: It went on for days because the vol rocker was broken.

Nothing has changed since this update back a few years ago.

Is there a way I can use one of my apps or one of the standard settings to research the details of my ROM?

As much as I really enjoyed having this much control over my phone if you followed my posts you'd see that I'm not as tech savy as most of the crew here. OB, Granite, dustwun77, Xtremedays, and a slew of others hung in there with me til I got the deed done. Everyone here has been patient and great in walking me thru every issue I've had.
Things were so good for so long that I just enjoyed the EVO as is and never bothered playing around with different ROMS as a lot of people do here. Maybe if I spent more time hanging out here and trying new things I'd know what I have " under the hood " so to speak. But I'm a little like those people I used to laugh at the thought
" bored stroked and blown " was an act of perversion. <VBG>

Hey OB,
Did I get the ROM right? There are 3 pages of posts for that first ( and only ) ROM update.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Maybe I'm missing something, but nothing in the last 3 post make any sense to me

If this is not my ROM then I need to

1 Go back and sift through that first post in hopes of finding what ROM I changed to.

or

2 Find an app of place in the phones tools or settings to find the ROM so I can write it down here.

I do not remember the name of it off the top of my head.

"....you have Amon RA 2.3 recovery. Translation: Your recovery is Amon RA 2.3, which most of us find to be the best.

Go here and download the Odex version"

So you have Amon 2.3 recovery correct?

Unless you have a need to keep the current rom you might think about backing up all your apps with Titanium Backup and flashing a new rom. This would give you a fresh start and in the process get rid of the bloatware you mentioned in the first post.

I assume all your contacts are synced with Google.

Sorry that I can't remember or find for sure what it is that exist on this phone.

I've spent a few hours looking through my old posts especially the longest one which as I recall is the one where and when I changed what came with this phone when I got it.

I just found a post from that time and attempted to copy and paste it on one of those virtual sticky notes that I have on my computer. What's in the forum note says 4.24.651.1 Odexed What posted on the note is this:
software 4.24.651.1
So I see that the number is exactly the same but "Odexed" showed up as "software"
When I reread that original posts it amazes me how long it took to get the job done; not because the help wasn't there but in my opinion it is because the details of super=tuning our phones is a lot more involved than changing out a carburetor on a car or bike. Just my opinion and the reality of things. If I ( we ) want to do things with our phones ourself then we need to follow instructions and learn the terminologies necessary to do these things. As I mentioned in one of my posts here I don't know how to thank this crew here on androidforums.com enough. Everyone took time and even pointed me to places where I could read about "flashing" and "rooting" and "ROMS" and a course load of things that would be helpful to understand these things. And I did read those things back then and along the way have " paid it forward " in my own way of helping others who know a lot less than I do.

But now I'm feeling stupid again. I didn't write things down and I do not remember. Unlike the crew here who change "ROMS" dozens of times I changed mine once back in 2011.

Wouldn't it be great if an app existed that could capture all that exists now in/on my phone so when someone asks me: what ROM do you have and what Kernel are you using, I can open the app, write it down and type it out here. Or if I could go into: Menu, settings, about phone ( or another sub-menu ) and again write down what I see and know that what I see IS what's one my phone and know that it is accurate. Following that procedure, I do see that under " software information " this number appears: 4.24.651.1 but it doesn't say Odexed anywhere. Under Kernel version it says 2.6.35.10gc0a661b but has a date from before the time I purchased the phone. Does this mean that I didn't change the Kernel or does it mean that the information is no in sync with what's on my phone?

To answer your question about gmail sync: Yes. That said things are not often straight forward. Do to reasons beyond my control my gmail password was changed and ever since then there are glitches that make me want to start all over again from scratch: new gmail account and even a new phone since this one is over two years old.

Now with the phone starting up and shutting down on it's own and the other issues that are developing slowly overtime; I'm thinking that my inability to answer some of these basic questions without these long narratives is a PITA and waste of time for most of the crew here who are willing to help.

I have an app called Super tool box 10+. I use that to " clear cache " on a regular basis. You suggested to :

" One possible quick fix might be to clear the caches through your recovery, but I suspect you have the older Clockwork version that I would recommend changing."

So, typical of what I was just trying to explain; I have no idea who to do what you suggested nor do I know about " older Clockwork ".

I thought that a new battery might clear up the issue that pops up after those reboots that tell me that HTC touch screen is not working properly and needs to be force closed. After that happens it works fine until the next time it turns itself off. Then I get the same message which may use slightly different wording.

I really do appreciate you're trying to help me with this Biker and I apologize for these war and peace size explanations. But I'm not sure giving you the ole Sgt Shultz reply: " I know NOTHING! " would suffice.

My best educated guess is that you are on the stock rom. Rooted. With AmonRa as your recovery:)

As long as your contacts are backed up, you could flash a new rom to start fresh.
Flashing a rom will be akin to a factory reset...losing contacts/apps/texts and anything else on the internal memory.

You can either redownload your apps as needed or back them up with another app called Titanium Backup.
Anything on your sd card should be safe from being lost when flashing a rom, but best to save what you need, to your computer.

Did I understand this thread correctly? Phone acting wonky and a possible solution is to factory reset or flash a rom? :)

Yeah, it's "wonky". Been thinking of a new phone. When you see how long it takes just to figure out what the rom is you can imagine what might happen if I try to change it.

Getting things together one step at a time.

I wrote out this thank you and apology. Was editing it as I was writing. I must have nodded out for a few seconds and hit delete of something because it all went away. Maybe that was divine intervention giving me time to rethink what I wanted to say.

In the meantime, Thanks to everyone who took time to respond!:)
