This whole updating process is such a hassle... is the update worth it? What are the benefits of Gingerbread vs 2.2? Im running 2.2, unrooted, using Go Launcher, and overall really happy with the phone, except for the occasional annoyances like battery life...

I just updated last week. It ended up going smoothly for me, but I waited until I saw how it was going for other people before I decided to do it. I ended up finding a few different posts with some good info, and wrote up a summary of how I did it based on their info. The process they described seems to be working for most people.

I'm glad I did it, and I'm even more glad that it went smoothly. My phone (unrooted, GoLauncher or Launcher Pro, depending on my mood) is noticeably faster when navigating through menus, loading lists/apps, etc. I think there were a few changes to icons, but I don't use any stock icons anyways, and it sounds like you might not either. Battery life seems a little better. I'm about 10-20% higher at the end of the day than I was on Froyo.

Hope this helps.

I was pretty much at the same point you were. I was running Froyo, with Go Launcher and pretty content. Then I upgraded. Well, honestly, It's still kind of the same. I have about twice the battery life, and there are a few updates to icons and how things look. I really like the quickboot which puts the phone into sleep (rather than turning off) and really quickens up the amount of time that it requires to turn on...

Over all, Yea I would probably go to Gingerbread if it's just for the battery alone. Personally, I have also had no issues with the upgrade. The patch found my missing apps and I have had no other problems.

I woke up this morning to see that I had a new system update. I got the big update a week or so ago but the smaller "fix" update failed due to lack of space. I assumed that it was the "fix" update trying to install again. I went in and made sure I had about 500 mb of free space this time. I clicked on 'reboot and install', but it just sat there on that screen w/out rebooting for 25 minutes.

I give up on this stupid update. Very frustrated. I'm not sure who to be mad at. With all of the Nexus delays, I'm fed up with Verizon.

When I download the file to my pc - what is the process for updating the phone from that point or is there another thread that will walk me through it? Thanks!

same thing happened to me. I gave up and rebooted. the update did not take, but my phone says i am Up to date with all my software

For all the people still having trouble, I would suggest a factory reset. It's not that big of a deal, & the update will be waiting for you when you power back up.

Anyone else thinking that rooting seems to be the much easier route? :)

Just saying...:D

I've tried getting the OTA update installed (the first one) for days, and it failed at every turn.

Rooting and flashing the OTA image was FAR less painful and the phone feels brand new.

So I totally agree.

Edit: And yeah, I think it was worth the effort. 2.3.4 runs beautifully and has a lot of nice little tweaks.

I finally went to accept the update (4.08), and the phone said "rebooting now..." and nothing happened. I had copied the update out of cache before I tried updating. Can I apply the update manually without loosing my data? If it's like doing a factory reset, then I might as well try a different ROM...

Cleared the cache, have plenty of space on both SD card and internal memory, changed the date and can get the update to download at will.

It downloads, verifies and even restarts and begins to install. However, it stops about a third of the way thru and makes me go to recovery (red triangle).

In recovery, it aborts at the following step:

E:Error in /cache/5059e5b6c5b2.OTA.Incredible.C.Gingerbread.S.VERIZON.WWE..4.08.605.2-3.26.605.1..release.222220.zip

I am now giving up. Too frustrating for what it appears to be worth and already spent too much time on this.

I don't want to reset the whole phone. Too many settings and layouts perfected over the last year and a half to risk throwing it all away.

I love the Incredible, and I'm happy with Froyo, but I'm eying the Rezound and Galaxy Nexus, and will probably have one of those two soon...

Is anyone having problems with ActiveSync emails not pushing after the 2.3.4 upgrade? I'm basically dead in the water without push email from my Exchange Server. Reminds me of a Motorola phone I once had...for 3 days.

I successfully installed both the 4.06 and 4.08 updates. My question is, if I now do a factory reset, will I still have the latest updates, or will my phone return to the original Android 2.2 I had when I first got this phone?

Yes, of course I have Googled this (thanks Mr. Obvious)... Anywho, thought this might be a bit more productive. I have continued to play with this issue on my own and, at least for the time being, going into sync accounts and removing "pc sync" has cleared up the error on my phone.

"Factory Reset" is a bit misleading at this point. It won't really return your phone to what it was like when it left the factory, you'll still be on the version of android that you had before you did the reset. It DOES wipe all of your information off the phone, so you'll need to set up everything all over again - which depending on your setup really isn't all that time consuming.

Is there a list of all the changes in the updates?

I got the first one last week, the second one failed due to lack of spce. Second one tried again on Sunday, said it was going to reboot but never did. Tried moving the date, again it didn't update. Did the cache clearing thing, nothing since then. It seems faster and smoother than before and the battery lasts longer. My data on/off widget doesn't work anymore and keeps crashing. The 3G symbol looks awful. The installed apps screen is nicer. Other than that I haven't found any changes.

Those having problems with Exchange Email, just go to manage accounts and just sync and it takes care of the certification. Real simple.

Thanks so much for the response. One follow-up question: will I need to reactivate the phone?
