Gingerbread 2.3 was here, then gone, now it's back

Good morning folks. I was having problems installing this latest OTA where I kept getting the not enough space error (got that 3 times). After deleting a bunch of stuff I tried again and then it would just count down and not do anything (got that about 3 times, too). In trying to resolve this and actually get the update to 4.08 I managed to click "CLEAR STORAGE" on the HBOOT screen. Well, when the phone restarted I got the 4.08 update to finally install, but now I'm not sure what I should do next.

1.) What is the difference between "clear storage' and a factory reset? Should I do a factory reset?

2.) I tried to root the thing with Unrevoked 3.32 just now, and when it tried to get root I got an error message stating it was unsuccessful and that maybe my firmware was too new. Is there a way to get root with unrevoked 3.32 now that I'm on 4.08? I just want root to uninstall some of the bloatware. I might do more later, but that's all I'm looking for at this point. I read a TON of posts on here about rooting, but so many folks were doing so many different things (downgrading, etc.) it was hard for me to figure out if I could just get root now that I'm on 4.08.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Well, after posting this I went to make a call on my phone and it wouldn't work. No 3G, either. I tried *228 a a few times, and did a factory reset followed by *228. The messages said it was updated successfully, but no phone or 3G. Spent about a half hour on the phone with Verizon doing the same stuff, at which point they pronounced it dead and told me they'd send me my choice of an Incredible or an Incredible 2. I opted for the Incredible since I just picked up an extended battery and case a couple months ago. My NE2 deal is up in March, so I'll probably get a 4G phone then.

I am highly bummed. I've had this phone almost a year and half and haven't had one bit of trouble with it. I am not wanting this replacement.

Is it possible I messed something up when I tried to root it? Is there something I did when I tried to root it I can undo and see if the phone works before I send it back?

I finally got my PC to recognize my phone, I guess I didn't leave it connected long enough in Disk Mode, it took about 5 minutes and then removable disk (K) showed up and removable disk (L) showed up too. argh, I don't remember having to wait that long before I wonder if it's that 90 MB file from the g-bread update.

just started the update. hoping for the best.
since a prior update I've had to click a "tab" to download and read emails in gmail; nobody at VZW store can explain.
hope I don't lose much, but hoping for a new phone soon anyway: razr or nexus.

I'm having the same problem. The only way to get new mail is the refresh within the app. Anyone have any ideas?

After trying to install the second update at least 6 times this week (I got the not enough memory error then the window telling me the update would install in 10, 9, 8, ... nothing), I finally got it to work after setting the date a month forward and then doing a factory reset. After activating, the update prompt appeared and it installed 4.08.605.2.

All this effort for 2.3.4 (GINGERBREAD!!!), and I plan on getting the Galaxy Nexus when it's available (hopefully) in a few weeks ...

This single update process and the low space issue are the reasons I will avoid HTC Sense phones now. Thanks HTC.

Same here. After numerous attempts and various headaches, I finally managed to update mine to 2.3.4 (build 4.08.605.2). Seriously, what a pain in the ass... I didn't have to do a factory reset, but I had to try several different methods to finally get the OTA update to push to my phone. We're all tech savvy, but what about the people who aren't?

Honestly, you'd never see this degree of nonsense with the iPhone....never. I've been an ardent supporter of Android and HTC, but I'm at the end of my tolerance between problems with updates, piss poor battery life and that constant low space error on this particular phone. I never thought I'd say this, but if the iPhone 5 is released with a bigger 4" screen and new design, I'm jumping ship. I'll jailbreak it to get the openess I love about about Android and I won't look back.

For now I'm finally going to root my Incredible as soon as I find a tutorial I can actually follow! Now that we've gotten the last update this phone will ever receive, I think it's time.

The options you will have with jailbreak may be enough for you, but are not comparable to what you can achieve with root on Android.

And honestly, these specific update problems are really just limited to this particular phone. Iphone has it's own share of glitches and problems with updates/software. There will never be a smartphone created that doesn't have problems for at least some people. Believe it or not, there is ALOT of people who have had no problem with the update or have any clue that it was delayed/pulled etc, or even what "gingerbread", "froyo", "ice cream sandwich" even are.

Well, I agree with most of what you said, if you have been paying attention to apple you will see iphone 4s is having its share of battery problems so much so that apple has released a couple updates some working some not for users so there in the same boat. But I do give apple credit for their simplicity in getting it done and not making the consumer jump through hoops to get an update.

With all that...my contract is up on my incredible in May 2012 and the new iphone 5 will be announced in June 2012 so if it's 4" screen I will most likely buy it, would be my first iphone.

HTC and Verizon do seem to butt heads, neither seem to work well together. One seems to always blame the other as evidence in this entire thread.

I am still very happy with my incredible and will keep it till the new iphone is announced and decide then.

This is the only update we have got that wasn't a single update and smooth. The nexus should be updated earlier and bugfree when it gets updated. This will be an advantage. Otherwise all manufacturer have their sordid updating past.

The low space was a mistake they wont make again. Had it been software correctable, it would have been fixed. However, they know how to avoid it and you wont see other phones with it from HTC

The next post about.Samsung made.me laugh a bit, they aren't exactly batting 1.000 in timely and bugfree updates.

Yes this update was botched but at this point there is almost no reason not to root and have been running GB earlier.

I love the iPhone is perfect love. Had a buddy show off siri to me, I assume ill be impressed once it actually works.

Every phone has negatives, find the ones you can deal with and go with it. Just don't.move over expecting perfection.

Like what for example? What does rooting do that jailbreaking can't? Also, is there a simple tutorial to root the Incredible for a novice? Has the method changed since the Gingerbread update? I'm not saying that I am jumping ship... but only that I'd consider it if the next iPhone is tempting enough.

Also, these update problems are not just limited to this phone. I have friends on other carriers with Android phones with very similar update headaches. Say what will you will about iPhone problems with updates/software, but they simply don't compare to the messes Android consistently has and are often quickly resolved. I'm far from an Apple supporter, in fact I can't stand them... so it takes a lot for me to say that.

I keep waiting for that ultimate Android phone to be released, but it just never seems to happen. I thought it was going to the be the Galaxy Nexus, but no... it's far from ultimate and I'm tired of making compromises in preference for Android. It's frustrating.

I'm finally getting the update (but having problems getting it to install). However, I noticed something. It claims to be 87.7 MB and version 4.08.whatever. I thought the first update was version 4.06.whatever and 87.7 MB and 4.08 was only a few MB.

After apparently pulling the first update a few days ago, is it possible they have combined the two updates into a single update?

Yes, it looks like they "slip streamed" the two updates. My wife's phone got this combined update yesterday and went straight from Froyo to 4.08. I grabbed the file before the update ran. If anyone wants a copy, just PM me.

I agree, Android updates can be a pain. The OTA method can be glitchy and in many cases, a factory reset is required to smooth things out. This is one of the primary reasons I root. This allows me to backup apps and settings, wipe, then flash a fresh Rom and get everything back. I share your frustration when it comes to non-rooted phones.

I have rooted with unrevoked and am running 2.2 currently. I've gotten the alert for the ota update twice now, and both times when I click to install, it says "Rebooting..." and then just hangs there. Eventually, I hit cancel and the option to update disappears (even under 'about phone' it just says my system is up to date). Anyone have a similar problem? Any advice for how to deal with this? I don't know too much about rooting, ROMs, etc., so maybe I need to change something before accepting the update.

After jumping through hoops trying to get the update, i factory reset & noticed the phone runs faster, longer, & overall just a crap ton better. I use to only turn 3G on when I needed it but now I keep it on because my battery lasts that much longer. The out of space error has not returned even after bombarding my phone with apps. Overall I don't think a factory reset is all that bad, & if you can't get the update, i would suggest it. It only takes a couple hours to get your phone back to the was, or at least for me. I don't regret it one bit.

Got today's one step update. Took less than 15 minutes, no problems with rebooting at all. Texts/calls...did not notice low memory/space, no lost apps, camera and wi-fi work, but finally came across an apparent glitch.... my PC (Win7) shows two removable drives when I plug in to the computer, even when it just plugged in as Charge Only! I clicked on each separately, PC was unable to detect the drives (internal and SD card.) I disconnected the cable, unmounted the SD card, reconnected the cable as charge only, and yet the computer still popped up with two removable disk drives, and in Device Manager, two HTC Android Phone USB Devices show up when the charge only is plugged in.

I think the benefits of a reset were a better option than waiting and hoping that my phone would get the update & deal with all the not enough space crap. I think doing the reset fixed that and it just performs better than before.

Just a quick update. I had to do the manual two-step update a couple of days ago. It was a time-consuming ordeal and took about six hours of preparing, research, downloading, backing-up, and finally doing the deed with several false starts. Eventually it took with no restart, loss of data, settings, etc. I've also had no problems with my PC recognizing the SD or phone. So today my wife's phone gets the notification again (we passed the first time around). She has only a few apps and no SD. I figured this would be the one-step OTA, so I held my breath and hit install. Ten minutes later, DONE, fini, all installed with no problems whatsoever. WTF?

And to the person that asked, things that root can do that jailbreak can not? It is my understanding that you absolutely cannot use an alternative keyboard or launcher on iphone.. keyboard would be enough for me btw

Ive tried everything but cant get it to re activate tried a factory reset and all since everything was gone anyways. just wondering if any was had this problem with the update. This was to the 4.08 update or the small update to the main one.

Well, I hate to tell you this, but the exact same thing happened to me, except my phone number was (and still is) stuck at 0000001265. I've tried reactivating it about 10 times. Spent about a half an hour on the phone with Verizon yesterday and they finally pronounced it dead and offered to send me either a Droid Incredible or Droid Incredible 2. I didn't even have to complain to get them to offer this. I was quite clear with them that this problem started immediately after the OTA update. You probably realize this, but you can no longer make or receive calls on that phone since it can't be activated. If it's important he has a working phone, I'd get on the phone to Verizon. They are overnighting mine, but since I did this on the weekend I won't see it until some time on Tuesday. :-(

Try going into menu>settings>date/Time
uncheck update automatically
Then set the date ahead one month.

Then menu>settings>about phone>system updates
if the update doesn't show.....just go back to home and repeat
menu>settings>about phone>system updates a couple of times.

If that doesn't work....go back and change the date ahead ANOTHER month.
