Gingerbread 2.3 was here, then gone, now it's back

I have my sneaking suspicion the OTA is dead because of all the issues and HTC/Big Red just said forget it.

It's been 2 weeks. They have to identify the problems, fix them, validate and test the new update, get it approved, get a new update slot, and push out the update, the whole time it will be bouncing between 2 corporate bureaucracies. Even it it goes perfectly, it will take time. And odds are it will have to repeat atleast a couple steps. And they technically will have to do this TWICE, since a number of people received the previous OTA already.

And the update is 99.995% there. The market issue is trivial to fix, the SD card app honestly is NOT a software problem, and should be fixed by directing users to move apps off sd card before the update. AFAIK most of the other issues have been fixed in various roms, so the fixes shouldn't be hard for HTC.

Just a slight correction - it's been almost 4 weeks now I believe... I just wish Verizon would say something. I know they won't say how long, but just an acknowledgement that it was stopped and pulled to be fixed.

I would figure though, they'd just let the update finish, let all the phones update, then later on when it's ready send out a patch/update. That way they don't have to figure some way to update phones that had the update, and those that didn't. One less thing to figure out...

I would have done it that way as well, but I don't run the updates for either HTC or Verizon. I comes down to a trade off between making the fix easier versus avoiding a lot of Customer Support headaches. I figure the number of updated phones was small enough that they erred on the side of pulling the update.

And I understand the reasons for not giving more information (better for them if they say nothing than saying something that ends up changing). But it is incredibly frustrating. They could just update a file on a web page saying the status of the update, or an ETA, or something.

An update that covers both previously and non updated phones is simple. They release the update as 2.3.5 and it is new for both groups.

Verizon had no choice here. It would be illogical to continue sending out an update that was causing problems. The majority of users have no idea there is an update. Those people would be the ones calling customer service instead of coming here to fix the phone. Even easy solutions or cosmetic errors are likely to upset users more than a delay of an update they don't know about.

There is at least 1 problem Verizon is unable to fix right now. That problem has lead them to having to replace phones. This becomes a huge loss.

Also. Believe it or not, if they admit to a problem they can't fix, a bunch of people who have perfectly functional phones will call and try and get a free Inc 2 because of a problem that didn't even effect them. Replace it and you give away a phone with no contract extension. Don't.replace it and the bad PR hurts

You say that Verizon has no choice and they can't (or shouldn't) admit there is a problem and the update was halted, yet they have no problem announcing that the update for the Thunderbolt was stopped for problems:

Sure, maybe people haven't had to have their phones replaced, but if Verizon acted as quickly with the Incredible as they did with the Thunderbolt (which I think just started pushing out the update), maybe they wouldn't have such an issue... It's strange how communicating to your customers goes a long way, huh? How many less angry, upset, pissed Incredible users would there be, if they just said, "yeah, there's a problem, it warrants us halting the update to fix it". I know that'd be OK with me. I for one would rather know a little bad news, then be totally in the dark.

Oh yes, I know what you mean. Yup Yup! The best way to load any ROM is similar to the way you install Windows... From Scratch!! Wipe off all data on the phone. Forget backups and all. Do it like Windows, re-install everything manually. Sure, it's a pain, but it's well worth it.

I'm not exactly sure what "OTA" stands for, nor what it is, but I do recall getting a message from Verizon to during the Froyo migration days, to install an "upgrade" which did not reinstall my system from scratch. It was so destructive it lead to my first refurb phone replacement. So, if that was the OTA, then I'm not nearly as surprised that the one for 2.3 is bad as I am that Verizon has the 'nads to encourage any type of rolling upgrade after the way it went with Froyo.

I later upgraded to Froyo from scratch - did the hardware reset, got the upgrade which was pushed by Verizon this way - PIA, but it could have been worse, and my phone worked afterward.

Anyway, what I meant to ask is how do you obtain the Gingerbread upgrade to install from scratch? Do you need, at this point, to download it from a website somewhere, or is it now being pushed by Verizon when you do a hard reset? If the former, I am rooted, so I can probably do it that way.

What do you mean by this? Neither Verizon nor HTC have a monopoly. HTC is in a HIGHLY competitive industry. They are providing an update to a phone that is 18 months old, and has been off the shelves for 6 months. Where exactly is the unfair business practices here?

Guess I'll never be clear on what actually happened during the 2.2 migration. I had my first smartphone for about a month when it got pushed thru, I wasn't clear on what to expect in the process. All I remember for sure is a system message referencing an upgrade, followed by another, which appeared rather negative after some attempt at installing something apparently failed My phone turned into a bit of a thrashing monster until I got it sorted out with a reset. I'm not really sure what my system upgrade status was during the time in-between, only that it was worse than useless. With such an experience, this user is hardly psyched when the upgrade drum starts beating again, but I do know that my misery owed no credit to the use of an RUU, and the RUU upgraders are happy.

So, what differences between the RUU and the OTA make this difference, and how can I get the RUU?

I updated to GB using this ROM on XDA forums.

It runs great and I haven't had one out of memory error since.The only minor problem I have its some icons in folders show the generic Android icon after booting.This is fixed by killing the HTC Sense process.I also updated the radio.I would recommend you do a full backup before installing this ROM and move the apps on your SD card to phone storage before you update.I used ROM manager to perform the update.On another note, I am going to take a good look at a Windows 7 phone when my time is up.They just rolled out an update through all their affiliated providers without a hitch,AFAIK.New update of windows phone its getting raves from everyone so far.Heard to believe! Have fun!

I was responding to the comment regarding why doesn't Verizon provide an upfront explanation of why no GB continuation. My response was, Verizon doesn't have to do anything, since its a Bi -opoly, essentially. Nothing to do with HTC.

OK, I would appreciate some direction here. Received the OTA GB update (as I have posted previously), and it is full of problems (drops bluetooth mis call, out of space constantly, gmail calendar items created on the web do not show up on the phone-reverse does work, etc). I am about to hard reset, but then I was wondering what you far more knowledgeable folks would say about waiting for a patch. I am expecting that I will have to wipe the phone when the patch arrives, so I do not want to go through the hassle twice in a few weeks time. Should I just wait? I am not interested in rooting right now. Actually, Tuesday may be the day I decide to go iPhone... Although if there new phone is only an iPhone 4S, that still has a glass back, that won't happen. For those that did not receive the update, you are missing NOTHING that matters (at least as far as the OTA experience). A PR fail, indeed.

Problems...she can't receive text messages.

Verizon admits there is a problem with the gingerbread update but has no answers. We asked to have the text plan removed from the bill until this is resolved, said they can't do that and it will have to be credited...

Said we could go to an old phone, said we could submit insurance claim and pay the $100 deductible, or get a new phone all together. - Notice their cause and admittance of the problem lends to us spending money...

They have no satisfactory answer for us and it's rather annoying. Thankfully my phone is still on 2.2.

Assuming it wasn't rooted before, no. You can't root it.

Perhaps the update.zip method? Or will it give a error because the current firmware is newer than the one trying to be applied?
