Help Gingerbread battery life... in a word... sucks

When I originally went to gingerbread (.588, currently on stock .596 ota) I had a perceived battery drain issue that settled down after a few days. Currently I'm gettin the same amount of time between charges and sometimes that is 5 hours (internet, texting and on the phone almost straight through). There are days that I go on a single charge and I'm very satisfied overall. Living in this century affords me the luxury of a place to recharge everywhere I go.

I guess I'm trying to say ride it out and it will settle down.

enjoy,

i have exact same problem. haven't installed any app since since the OTA (unrooted btw) in fact i have uninstalled a few. on froyo with light use i was getting 1.5-2 days on a charge ( i charge nightly so this was perfect in fact i raved about the X and the stock battery to people).
on gingerbread with NO use it dies in 6 hrs, this includes turning off data sync, wifi, gps everything off but the cell radio. going to do a factory reset on it tonight and hopefully that fixes the problem.

When I was on zombie stomped and .595 my phone would last all day, now 5 hours tops with light useage. I guess I am going to have to do the factory reset thing but was hoping for a zombie stomped for the .596 release before I did it but it seems that is not going to happen!

I had to do the same thing with my wifes stock Facinate when it took the OTA to Froyo it would not keep a charge, since I factory reset it is good to go!

I used MyBackup with hers and it seemed easier to use than TI backup, any thoughts?

While battery life is still rather good for me.. I swear it was much better on .595 than it is on .596.

I might venture a guess and say that the people having poor battery life may be experiencing problems with compatibility with some apps that they have installed. A number of apps that I had installed while on Froyo no longer function correctly. While none of mine have caused excess battery usage, I can imagine some apps might. A factory reset and using it without adding any apps might help determine if this is a cause or not. Then methodically add the apps you used until the battery problem reoccurs (with any luck, I'm wrong and you'll get to have all the aps you had before and have god battery life).

I'm also having battery issues. I upgraded to GB on Monday. This morning my DX was at 100% at 7am (when I unplugged it from the car charger). After listening to Pandora for 6 hours, and moderate facebook and browser usage, it's at 20%??? Before GB with FroYo the battery life wasn't great, but this is rediculous. I don't have WiFi or GPS running and no auto sync's with my email, so what else would make this happen.
I'd be willing to try factory reset, but how do I do that? And what do I lose that I'll have to re-enter/reinstall?

not sure if this will help anyone or not, or if any of you are using the app or not. I had a friend of mine at work that also has the x that had terrible battery drain after the update, like a full discharge in a few hours with no use. Took it back to verizon and they told him it was lookout mobile security causing it. He uninstalled it and is now getting like 1-1.5 days of use out of it with moderate use.

Someone mentioned anti virus apps, and when I look at the running services, lookout is always at the top. I never had an issue with Lookout in Froyo, but I will test this tomorrow. I took my phone off charger at 11, and now at 5:30 I'm at 60% and I've been in meetings all day with just a couple of glances at email. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!

Thanks for the tip.

My battery life is fine, if not a little better, on GB. At 16 hours of normal use right now, and still at 40% left.

1st couple of days after GB upgrade (manual, SBF then 2 part root method) I only got 10 hours or so. Did a full drain then full recharge, now I'm getting 1.5 to 2 days with light to moderate use. I'm too busy to use my phone in the mornings so standby alone (no use) it takes 6 hours to go from 100% to 90%. Still not quite as good as I was getting on Froyo w ApeX 1.4.0, but I can live with it.

My Droid X with GB has the same problem. The app now draining 28% of battery life after 5 hours is "com.android.contacts." (At day's start before I had used the X much it was draining 43%!) Is this app necessary if my contacts are on my work's Outlook server?

I'm 50% after 14.5 hours right now. I work in a large building that doesn't get very good reception and I know it always drains my battery quite a bit....but honestly I have barely even used my phone today except for maybe 20 texts and 1 phone call. Otherwise, nothing. I used to be able to last 1.5 days but now I'm dying after one day. WTF, I thought GB was supposed to makes things better

Your apps will be downloaded automatically after a reset. The data (except email) will all be lost.
Your apps download automatically? Are you referring to paid apps or free apps?

I only ask because I am having major reboot issues so the Verizon rep did a factory reset and none of my apps automatically downloaded. The rep stated I would have to find all the apps again within Android market. If I missed something it would be great to know for future reference.

Thanks. :)

I still have a hard time understanding the people who are EXTREMELY disappointed that their phone doesn't last more than one day. I'm constantly hearing people talk about how they now have to charge their phone EVERY night, while the phone they had before lasted 2, 3 4 or even 5 days before having to recharge it. Now don't get me wrong, I DO understand if your not able to make it through the day, but most of the complaints I hear are about only making it a day and a half. Or, I was all the way down to 20 percent when I plugged it in last night to go to bed. I'm just not getting it. I've tried to come up with reasons why it is so difficult to put the phone on the charger but I just can't come up with anything. Well.... I came up with one. If you don't have electricity and you have a generator connected to a stationary bike to charge your phone. That would be very inconvenient but I'm guessing that is pretty unlikely.

For me, if I make it through the day and my phone dies on me just as I lay down to go to bed. That is perfect! That means I'm getting the most power out of my phone, it's as fast as it can run and get me through the day. If I have half a battery left, that means to me that the phone needs to be overclocked so I get more speed throughout the day. It takes me 5 seconds to plug my phone in at night. By having a processor speed that kills my battery by bed time, I'm saving a lot more than 5 seconds.
I totally agree with you!

I have enjoyed my phone even more since the update. I have to charge my battery every night regardless of the update or not. I hope you dont have more issue than you think. I do believe it has nothing to do with your phone. Its that your spending more time on it looking at the update features and have used more battery than normal. Hope you get your issue resolved.

I am now at 80% after 6 hours.

My usage reads as:

Phone idle: 39%
Cell Standy: 30%
Display: 18%
Android OS: 4%
Live Scores: 4%
Dolphin Browser HD: 3%
Market: 2%

I downloaded 1 update from Market that was 2mb. I sent 4 text messages. I checked my hotmail e-mail through Dolphin browser. That's IT! The live scores alerts me when games start and it did when the White Sox began. It does update my widget but not very often.

I am not worried about my phone lasting a full 2 days but I know what it used to be able to do (1.5 days easily with heavy usage) and for it to be draining this fast just doesn't make sense to me

Your apps download automatically? Are you referring to paid apps or free apps?

Well, yeah they should once you launch the Market for the first time after a reset. I've had mixed results over the months when fully wiping for new ROMs etc. Most of the time I've had luck with the Market downloading most of my apps, but I've never had it download ALL of them like I had hoped. I try & just initiate new downloads via web Market now. Then, once I need to reinstall all my apps again (& it doesn't work fully), I can just look up my "installed before" history list on the web Market website.

I got the GB OTA and didn't have any battery issues at all....until yesterday.

I almost wonder if it was the Weather Channel app b/c that is that last app I installed from the Market. Since then, my battery went from 100% after charging all night to 40% by 10:30am after only using Google Listen and the MP3 player, which I've had since Froyo.

Then I plugged it into my dock (via USB, not wall) at 10:30 and by 5pm it was only at 50%.

I had the same problem after the Droid X Gingerbread update... The battery only lasted about 3 or hours from full charge to dead and phone was hot (no calls, no surfing, GPS off, WiFi off, Bluetooth off. I called Verizon and they told me to uninstall Advanced Task Killer. Apparently devices running Android 2.1 or later you do not need to kill tasks... I uninstalled it, but still encountered the same issue last night. Full @ 5pm and dead by 9pm.

SOLUTION:
If you use corporate synch for work. Go into Settings / Accounts and delete your corporate synch account. Then immediately go back to Settings /Accounts and add it back. That's all!

It has been about 4 hours and I am still showing a nearly full charge w/ WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS all on.

Try that! Good luck! :)

I was in the same boat as many of you. 1.5 days of battery life down to 5 hours after the update. I REALLY didn't want to do a full factory wipe. I cleared the cache - No luck. Pulled the battery. Nope. I deleted some apps. Nothing. I deleted and reset my corporate account and BAM! I'm back, baby! I let the battery do a complete drain (which now took hours rather than minutes), did one final battery pull and we're back to our old form, no reset necessary.
