Root Gingerbread EVO on Boost Voicemail Notifier

I recently purchased a brand new evo running gingerbread and had it flashed to my boost account. Everything works great except I don't get a notification when voicemails come through. I read this was a problem with froyo but should not be happening with gingerbread. If anybody has some insight it would be greatly appreciated. And before anybody suggests it yes I know I can download a voicemail notifier app. Thank you in advance!

Have you tried going to Menu > settings > display > Notification Flash > and make sure voicemail is selected?
 
There is also another setting when you have the voicemail app opened. Under menu > settings > notifications > it has 2 options (sound and vibrate).
 
I was provided a fix for this by a very nice fellow from one of these forums. If anybody wants it send me a message.
 
Ok here it is!

Download this file and extract the phone.apk located inside:

THIS WILL ONLY WORK ON AN EVO 4G NOT 3D. YOU MUST BE ROOTED AND RUNNING GINGERBREAD!


Make sure your EVO is rooted.

Boot your phone into recovery mode by pressing the volume down key and power key. Once in recovery mode mount /system.

Download Android ADK from this link:

Android SDK | Android Developers

During installation change the directory for installation to c:\Android.

After the install run the SDK Manager. You will be prompted for downloads. Only check "Android-SDK-Platform Tools" and uncheck the rest.

Once installed you will be prompted to run ADB. Click yes.

Compy the phone.apk for voicemail fix to c:\Anroid\Platform-tools

Open command prompt and type:

cd c:\Android\Platorm-tools

If you haven't already deleted the phone.apk type the following:

adb shell
cd /sysstem/app
rm /system/app
rm phone.apk
rm phone.odex
rm vtt-sprint_v5_1_60.apk
exit

Once the phone.apk is removed you are ready to copy the new file over. Type the folling:

adb push Phone.apk /system/app/Phone.apk
adb reboot

Once phone reboots you are done!
 
Awesome it works!! i cant believe some are charging $10+ to do this for you. Anyways there are a couple a typos in the commands posted above just use the commands that are in the download (the notepad instructions in the the download) and it will work like a charm!! Thanks a lot!!!!

Time is money mich and $10 for what may be about an hour session is not very much for those of us with families and very little time as it is. Your welcome to post questions in this thread and I will do my best to help you out.

P.S. does the phone have to be rooted for it to work? will adb allow system access without it being rooted?
 
I don't think you have to be rooted but you do need a recovery rom to be able to boot to recovery mode and mount the system folder. I could be wrong. Way I see it is if you have an EVO on boost you probably are rooted anyway lol
 
I really appreciate the information you provided but my vmail notifications still dont seem to work.... do u mind revising ur directions maybe?

I promise I follwed all the steps and my phone rebooted after entering the reboot command but no notifications : (

could it be my gingerbread version 2.3.3?

I moved your thread to the "All Things Root" subforum because I'm assuming your Evo is rooted and you may get support that's more appropriate for your situation here.

Not necessarily and in fact, probably not rooted. Until revolutionary came out, there was (to my extremely limited knowledge) no reliable root for GB.

My phone was flashed to Boost using CDMA Workshop and is definitely NOT rooted. I had VM notification for a time, then suddenly (I think it was after one of the updates) it mysteriously stopped.

I still have the problem with VM notification.

As such, perhaps the thread should be relocated to Troubleshooting?

Where ever it is, I'd sure love to get a fix for this problem for UNrooted GB.

There is no way to make the necessary changes on an unrooted EVO.
 
I receive a FC (Force Close) message when trying to make/receive a call using the phone.apk. Ideas?

Using OMJ OMJ's HTC EVO 2.3.3 Custom ROM
