Gingerbread on HTC HERO ?

secreto

I have been playing about with my new toy the HTC HERO which I received yesterday and I was looking through youtube and I saw that someone had put the latest gingerbread on the HTC HERO. Me being a tech freak and a person that really enjoys modding different electric gadgets, thought this is my next challenge.

Could anyone advise me if it is safe (first of all) and how I would start to go about doing this?> Appreciate your help.

You'll have to root the handset, flash an alternate recovery and then install a third-party firmware (ROM). There's a sticky with lots of good guides in the All Things Root sub-forum, along with plenty of discussion topics.

After a lot of searching for a stable rom for my GSM Hero I was all but stuck on V13. I never even considered a 2.3 Gingerbread rom as I thought the hardware wouldnt be up to the job.

Then I stumbled upon this thread:

androidforums.com/hero-all-things-root/374776-htc-hero-cronos-ginger-x-2-3-1-android-2-3-4-a.html (you'll have to copy this link as it would seem I am not trusted to post links yet.... though I am allowed to use sharp knives under supervision)

I did a full reset and dalvik wipe via ClockworkMod and installed
HTC Hero Cronos Ginger X 2.3.1 (Android 2.3.4)

I have set up as follows:

Evo3 Kernel: Cronos Android, Android on Steroids! • CG-2.2.4_KP_.zip (link in other thread)
Wifi Fix: Cronos Android, Android on Steroids! • CG-2.2.4-WiFi-Fix_.zip (link in other thread)
Gapps: gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip (link in other thread)
Launcher: LauncherPro Plus (paid version from the market)
CPU over/underclocked to 672/264 with a screen off profile (Set CPU free from the market)

Its been 48 hours+ since my install and I literally have never sat the phone down. Loads of customisation, very slick to use and literally not one issue. No Force Closes, every app works 100%.
Messaging, mail, camera etc all working 100% stable and reliable.

It would seem my quest for a good Hero rom is over.... (for now)..... thanks to what I am calling my Ginger Hero.

Hope that helps the OP.

Further to my post above.... Thought I'd add this.
A complete guide to the whole process.

Not only tells you what to do but more importantly, why. Great guide.

Hi Prof,

Thanks for the links.. I am gonna flash my HTC Hero with this latest rom. Just a quick question..

In the site where they provide the links, there is a download (zip) for the Evo3 kernel and another one for Wifi-Fix. How do I apply this wifi fix after flashing my mobile with this new rom?

Thanks!!:)

While your in recovery mode, either using a rom manager or pressing menu while you switch phone on, after you have flashed rom, select zip from sd card. Select the zip and confirm install. It will be very quick and will notify when complete.
