Gingerbread release for Droid phones

Any idea if these leaks will work with the D2G? Or would I just get stuck in airplane mode as the best result.

Chances are very, VERY good that unless it says D2G, it won't work on our phones. The extra radio and accompanying drivers make it VERY unlikely that the D2 version will work. If it was that easy, we'd be able to run any of the D2 ROMs. I know we can, with the GRD ROMer tool, but that's not full functionality, it's just a port.

Figured that much. Thanks.

what kind of bugs??

The SWYPE keyboard wasn't working properly, the words would get swyped but they wouldn't populate the entry fields. I tried playing around with all the settings and factory resetting, no such luck at least on my phone.

The FACEBOOK app depending on the kind of comment/picture/post you were replying to ... there would be no button to submit ala new desktop web interface and there's no "enter" key that makes it "go" so you couldn't comment the post after typing it.

Some screen flickering on menus and system screens, nothing major, simply shading issues having to do with scrolling. Probably more of an aesthetic than a bug to be honest.

Battery Life and Speed on the other hand were AH-MAZING.

So what's the normal delay between a leak getting out and an official OTA update? I didn't want to root/rom my phone until the second year of my contract, but I'm thinking about installing this if we think it'll be upwards of a month before the OTA.

There is no set delay, a leak is not the finished product. Only once moto has completed their update they submit it to verizon if verizon approves it they decide when it is released. Otherwise they give it back to moto and they change that verizon wants and submit it again.

The rumor is that Verizon rejected this update. If that is true, it goes back to moto to fix and update then goes to Verizon again. To be totally honest, I am surprised there was even something to leak this soon. I wasn't expecting anything until summer.

Why would it get rejected? I'm running it now and not a problem so far.

Because carriers don't want us to get updates. They want us to buy new phones, so they will find any excuse to delay it.

Something not working to VZW's expetations. With the bugs that have been listed this does not sound like a rejected update but a leak of the current work in progress by moto.

what kind of bugs are people reporting, cause I've been running it for 2 days none and have yet to run into any problems.

Yes, reading the posts that were already replies to your previous posts works wonders in forums.

well we have custom roms for our droids already such as liquid, cyanogenmod, ultimate droid etc.. As far as I'm aware 2.3 isn't going to get pushed any longer except for a few select phones like the Nexus. 2.4 is so close to release they decided to call 2.4 gingerbread instead of icecream and just merge the updates.

i thought liquid was a original droid only

Yes it is a great D1 rom but it is just for the D1 the guy posted in the wrong section. The D1 is not going to get an official GB update as the cpu was originally clocked at 550 and then pushed up to 600 when froyo rolled out. The D2 should be getting a GB update from moto.

It will get one. It's just a matter of when now. I'm debating whether or not to just flash the leaked ROM and be done with it.

Being one who loves root, I'm going to hold off on installing any leaked ROMs. Reason being: I got burned with my Droid Eris. Because I had installed all the leaked ROMs, I had to wait a lot longer to finally root my phone while those who waited got root on the original ROM (1.5) and were able to install much more polished than the official 2.1 rooted ROMS. Plus, I think we went through a total of 3 leaked versions before finally getting the final.

I can confirm that the current gingerbread leak does not work on the droid 2 global. I tried it today, and then spent the next 7.5 hours unbricking my phone.

Next time, spend 7.5 minutes reading the things that tell you "This is incompatible with your Droid 2 Global". I could have told you the leaked Droid 2 gingerbread update didn't work on a D2G three weeks ago, when it came out.

Anyone hear of any updates for when GB will be released for the Droid 2? I upgraded my Droid X over the weekend and my wife is itching to get it. Her phone seems to be getting more random restarts and freezing issues every day.

It appears official OTA's have gone out for the DX and D-Pro. I honestly don't see why VZW would release it for the D2/D2G/R2D2 with the impending release of the Droid 3. However rumors say D3 will be Froyo ... meaning people will have a tough choice stick with the D2 in the hopes of GB soon or switch to what will be a sizeable hardware update in the form of the D3.

After doing some research, I fully believe the D2 and D2G will get Gingerbread, probably over the summer.
Over the summer? I guess it depends on your definition of "summer", but I honestly think the D2 will get it by the end of June. Considering the internals are essentially the same as the DX, it shouldn't take too much longer at all.

Google is making manufacturers/carriers commit to upgrades for a certain time--I think 18 months, and to get the upgrades out in a more timely manner.

Not all manufacturers have committed to this. And I believe that only applies to phones yet to be release unless the manufacturer grandfathers a phone in voluntarily.
