Mid May? It is mid May. Do we have to wait for AT&T to hold up their end of the deal after Samsung comes through again?

And also, for 2.3 are they basically just reskinning the theme, upgrading the terrible stock 2.2 keyboard, making Netflix usable, and doing some bluetooth stuff? Or is there more?

I read somewhere it would be sometime in June for N. America, and it is a little quicker and has new features, plus the whole netflix thing.

I'm using 2.3 on my Evo, 2.2 on my Epic / Captivate.

2.3 has some very very nice improvements. Speed is faster, battery seems better. You can lock the damn desktop so you don't accidentally add / delete app shortcuts / widgets or change the desktop - that is huge to me.

You can make Netflix work, but even bigger for me - Google Talk video chat. The Captivate doesn't have a front cam, but on my Evo with front cam it works awesome.

2.3 is simply the most awesome OS yet. 2.2 was great, but 2.3 is much better.

I will agree 2.3 is much better, its actually better than i thought it would be even though im on an unofficial version. its probably not as big an improvement as it was from 2.1 to 2.2 but it is still very nice

Yup.

Forgot to mention 2.3 also has Google account back up, which means Android Marketplace remembers the free apps you downloaded, in addition to the paid apps. Very handy feature.

Lots of subtle improvements, some are things that I've always wished for, others are just nice surprises.

A very polished update. Can't wait for Ice Cream next.

IMHO 2.1 = bare minimum Android experience.
2.2 = good Android experience
2.3 = polished Android experience
2.4 = ?? amazing?

1) Do I need to unroot before trying to update?

2) If so, are the new features worth the effort?
 
Well, the guys who just posted above you make it seem like the features are well worth the effort. I would say, TubaMeister, that if your rooted stuff is a spin off of Android 2.3 already, then it's not necessary for you to unroot and go official. But that's just me.

Did you find battery life to be better? 2.2 has been terrible for battery life for myself and several friends.

battery life is great for me, but mine wasnt bad on 2.2. alot of people say that doing a master clear after upgrading helped theirs out, but if youre not rooted you cant back your apps and stuff up
 
Will it be possible to save an email?

Does Swype work?

Really there are some simple things that I am more concerned about than Netflix.

I was able to upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 without unrooting, so I wouldn't expect to have to do it for the next step.

1) That's the beauty of Android, there are endless customizations. I too have mine setup the exact way I like it.

2) How ironic, after months of trying different roms to see what I liked best I'm also running 5.4.1.

In my case I like em lean and mean. Fast and free, so I decided I would put the bare minimum number of apps. Only the ones I use daily. A solid color static background, I like it to look uncluttered.

Now this baby is so fast, it nearly keeps up with my Galaxy S2. If I had not witnessed it myself, I wouldn't believe it.

What really makes me smile is to think of all the impatient angry Captivate users that bashed this phone so constantly. There's no question there's a lot of people that have done what you and I have, _without_ all the complaining...

Ironically this is one of the oldest Androids I have, and if not for my Nexus S, and SGS2, I'd rate this one at the top.

Nothing beats patience perseverance and an open mind. Never did I think it would be this good. I simply had the desire to learn the OS, and see how far I could go.

Rarely do I get attached to tech, but this ones a real keeper.

Great Question!

Here's what I know about GPS on the Android Platform, not just with the much maligned Galaxy S.

Not until the release of Gingerbread has Android become somewhat "GPS friendly" if you will. Because most people only have one phone, they lack the ability through no fault of their own, to experience what GPS is like on other Android phones. Also, AT&T being such a large company, that sells so many phones, it's only natural that Captivate owners would make a lot of "noise" over the fact that yes, GPS did not work very well to varying degrees on that handset. In addition the fact is that GPS does not work well on my other brands and models such as my Verizon HTC Desire running on 2.1 at the time.

One of the truly crucial aspects of any comparison is to have both devices running the same version of Android with similar hardware specs. Then and only then can one compare fairly to all involved.

Anyway, long story short, to put it in layman's terms (I'm a software engineer) the way the code is written on the earlier versions, just didn't match with the protocol required for good GPS performance.

Also because quite frankly I don't care about GPS, since I have it in all my vehicles, carry a hand held Garmin when hiking in the woods, etc. I did not worry or stress over poor GPS performance in my phones. I'm gradually getting them all loaded with Gingerbread and I can say that with version 2.3.3 GPS performance is quite good.
 
Been on Gingerbread for a month now. Fast, stable, great GPS!

I've been wanting to put a custom rom on for the longest time..but am afraid I'm going to mess up my phone. Could you please provide a step by step for a complete newbie. I'd like to back up all my stuff if possible as well (contacts, texts, apps)

Well I've been using a Gingerbread rom now (Serendipity VII) and all I must say is that it makes the phone so much better and feels like brand new. I don't know how the heck samsung was gonna sell this phone and expect people to stick with the stock + lag. So terrible. Also...is it even worth it to use the Gingerbread that's going to be released? Or is it better to just stick with a rom? Serendipity seems to be doing quite well at the moment for me.
