gingerbread?

is samsung and sprint really eyeing the gingerbread and plan on skipping froyo all together? I have no beef with that but why don't they let someone know so that I don't leave sprint for a better 4g network(lte), I am so very frustrated with sprint saying 30 days to froyo I was ready to disconnect my line and pay the 200, what exactly are they thinking? I have been with sprint for 5 years and they can't tell me an actual update date? and not bs me saying 30 days everytime I call?? I pay 1:eek::eek: bucks a month and paid 400 for this phone, wow sprint is starting to piss me off again now that I'm writing about it, but please, if you know someone at sprint tell them to open their eyes and smell the coffee, the lte network will kill them if they don't do something to retain the customers and get a friendly persona!

I don't think many people will jump ship just for the lack of a update to a phone. As far as a better 4g network, Verizon is going to have to work to get better pricing. From what I read Sprint isn't going to end its "everything" plans soon. That's what is drawing people to Sprint. People have to realize that updating a phone's operating system is much like upgrading a pc's operating systgem. They are going to be compatibility issues. I would rather have a functional operating system that works well with all the components of the than a subpar version where you have to wait for another update to fix another issue.

I might have been the one to start that rumor. I was just stating that is what Sammy/Sprint did on the Moment. They skipped 1.6 altogether....went straight from 1.5 to 2.1. I was just speculating....thasall. I think it would work better that way for the Epic....

It's a possibility that Samsung may indeed skip 2.2 and go to 2.3. Is it likely, the answer is unknown. HTC did the same thing to the HTC Hero. The question will the consumer be willing to wait. I had my share of smartphones from the Palm Pre to HTC Hero to HTC EVO to Samsung EPIC. I can honestly say I'm satisfied with what the Epic can do. It's far less laggy than the EVO with Froyo. I admit I miss some of the features had for the EVO but I ran Launcher Pro so switching from the EVO to the Epic was far less painful. I didn't like that HTC took away the ability to switch to a stock Android interface where Samsung kept this option. All in all, 2.2 or 2.3 is likely to come to the Epic soon. Patience is the key, though.

Since we already have multiple leaked beta builds of 2.2 I seriously doubt that the Epic will be skipping Froyo for Gingerbread. If they were going to do that why would they be sending out test builds for Froyo?

As for the amount of time it is taking - these things don't happen over night. Samsung needs to take Google's raw operating system and create drivers for the phone, everything from the screen to the keyboard and radios need custom drivers written for them in order to work with Android. Samsung also needs to tweak all their own customizations, which on the Epic is quite a few: the TouchWiz launcher, the messaging app, e-mail, notification bar, new settings menus, and not to mention all the Sprint apps as well. Creating all these changes, testing them, fixing problems, testing them again, and so on; it all takes time. Personally I would rather wait a few more weeks for a really good Froyo upgrade rather than have a mediocre one right now. Well, actually, I do have one right now as I'm running the DK28 beta build, and it's certainly not perfect yet.

They didn't "skip" 1.6, it was never intended for cdma devices. 2.2 is coming, there's. no skipping to 2.3 in the works. Samsung is slow to update...period! Unless they dramatically change their ways, they'll be slow to update to 2.3 too. Patience is a virtue.

Well, I am not waiting. lol . I will keep my Epic as I think it is awsome. But I will be purchasing the Nexus S this next thursday. Can't wait.

Nexus S is quadband GSM with AWS data support.

So he'd have to go to T-mo to fully utilize the phone (no HSPA+!), or could activate on ATTM with only EDGE data support.

Why not flash froyo dk28? I did a long time ago and have no problems here. The two best roms that I've tried are quantum and nebula. Anyways to be completely honest, I can't tell the difference between 2.1 and 2.2... seriously.

Samsung India has confirmed it...so, who knows, but is it not OK to have hope?

Because we live in the United States, not India, and Samsung USA has denied it. So your statement was wrong in the context of the Sprint Epic 4G.

There has been much misinformation over the past several months about various developments published from foreign sources -- the UK, Spain, now India -- erroneously applied to U.S. Galaxy S models. Such mistakes have been responsible for a lot of baseless expectation, for example about Froyo release schedules. Your statement -- assuming that something is said in India about Gingerbread applies here -- is just one more example of such misinformation.

So, just because Samsung India says so, then it MUST be wrong?? Samsung USA is always gonna tell u everything? And Samsung USA has always been so open and cooperative, right?! Since 2.3 is ways away, both of us have no facts! All of what we say is speculation...and as such, what Samsung India has said is as good as the denial from Samsung USA.

No.

It may well be that Samsung and the U.S. carriers will end up supporting Gingerbread. We don't know yet. That is speculation. What Samsung India says is about India, not the whole globe.

We do know that with respect to the Epic 4G in the United States, which is what this forum is about, the statement, "Either way, samsung has confirmed that 2.3 will come to our phone" is false. Just today, Samsung officially said on its U.S. Twitter feed:
@JoeBatson no official statement about updating US Galaxy S line to 2.3 has been made & we aren't prepared to discuss this at this time.

I understand your frustration...

but I will argue that it is not as simple as blaming Sprint and leaving..

I think it is way more Samsung's fault. Before Sprint can release it to the EPIC...Samsung has to release it to Sprint first for testing.

Sprint and HTC on the EVO upgrades... argue-ably Sense is much more in depth than Touchwiz into the Android OS. But HTC was able to get Froyo + Sense out to Sprint and out to EVO .. a few months ago.

added to this.. Samsung has a history of lackluster support on their devices.

"We aren't prepared to discuss" statement by Samsung US is not denial. Samsung India has stated that 2.3 will be on galaxy S phones, which means that this is good news to all galaxy s phone owners because there is a good/likely chance that all galaxy s phones will get it. That is more factual than your intepretation of the vague Samsung US statements. So, just because Samsung India says it, it is forbidden in this forum? And that we can't say that 2.3 is destined for our galaxy s phones?

"We aren't prepared to discuss" statement by Samsung US is not denial."

"No official statement about updating US Galaxy S line to 2.3 has been made" is certainly a denial that "samsung has confirmed that 2.3 will come to our phone."

When you're in a hole, stop digging.

This has nothing to do with you, Kelmar or me personally. I don't understand why you keep trying to turn this into some personal feud. It's simply a question of facts. And the statement was simply wrong.
