Root GingerShedBread/GSB

In the gmail app, this is working fine for me. If it's not working well in the Android email app, I'd suggest trying K9 Mail (though I haven't tried opening PDFs in K9 myself). It's a million times better and solves many problems with the stock mail client.

Does it play well with LiveOffice Exchange? Does it support e-mail push functionality?

This is correct - the Google apps are included in xtrSENSE, and do not need to be flashed separately, and the gapps that come with GSB are specifically for Gingerbread ROMs and will probably not work with Android 2.1 in xtrSENSE.

Nightsider, I will ask again: did you wipe data/factory reset before you flashed these ROMs?
Sorry, yes I did. Both factory and davlik.

Nope, installed k9 and no go. When one of my suppliers sends me PDF I used to be able to open it in my email now in the client nothing and in k9 it says unable to open application PDF.

Forward it to your gmail account and open it in the gmail app.

I have no idea about Exchange - thankfully, I am long past having to worry about that - but I know that, unlike the stock email app, it supports IMAP idle.

I used the 1-click app from the market to root. DL'd GSB 1.7 to my computer along with mini-gapps. Connected the phone and transferred both roms to the sd card. Disconnected from the computer and rebooted the phone. Did a nandroid backup, wiped both factory and davlik caches and then flashed GSB and gapps. Powered off and restarted. The Eris restarted, but balked at the "touch Android" screen. I don't think the touch screen was working and the phone started looping between the skating android and the "touch Android" screens. I had to pull the battery to stop it and then rebooted into recovery and restored the back up. That's it.

I wonder if one of your install files has been corrupted, giving you a faulty flash.

Isn't IMAP Idle a component of push?

IMAP is just a protocol for delivering mail. It allows storing your mail in folders on the mail server, etc. IMAP Idle support by both the mail server and the client is the equivalent of push for IMAP mail, but the Android mail client, which supports IMAP, does not use IMSP idle/push - it's set to poll your mail server for new mail on a regular schedule, the last that I looked.

K9 does support push for IMAP mail accounts.

I sent it to Gmail and it doesn't even show an attachment. I should probably also tell you that I'm doing this on the phone and not at home.

There is probably a setting in mail that does not include the attachment when you forward. As should be obvious by now, I don't use the standard mail client.

Perhaps you need an app that displays PDFs. Can you copy attachments from mail to the SD card? There is an Adobe Reader app: [ROM][10/20/2010]FlashBack21 v1 -Return to Factory Stock - UPDATED - xda-developers

I don't know if that runs on the Eris, but it does support GB. But, there are a number of PDF reader apps. Maybe one of these will work if the Adobe Reader app does not: https://market.android.com/search?q=pdf&c=apps

Actually, it does support push now. It's been flaky (doesn't always push them right away) in GSB 1.7 but worked perfectly in the last version. I hope it gets fixed.

Thanks for jarring my memory doogald. I seem to remember having a PDF viewer app several Rom's ago.

My old timey TV don't work. It quit after flashing 1.7. How is yours working.
Also I used to open PDF files in my emails but now it won't. Any ideas.

my old timey tv off thing isnt working any more either. :(

This is about a couple posts ago but for some reason my lag seems to have disappeared without me ever getting the chance to do something stupid and mess my phone up. Lucky me. Yay!

That's the best way to fix it! :D

Maybe it just needed time to sync and settle in.

Paleodust: That did the trick. I DL'd a new set of roms and everything went smoothly. I'm now enjoying GSB, thought it will probably take some time to learn all the ins and outs of it. Thanks for your help.

Well, if you are using Amon_RA's custom recovery, it won't let you flash a short/corrupted file...(ClockworkMod will...).

Something else must have been going on to cause your troubles...but it wouldn't hurt to remember to always check/verify the file size and MD5 sum of the files you are flashing after you've placed them on your phone and before you flash them. That way, you'll at least know that any issues you have are not due to a bad/incomplete/corrupted file.

Even if you don't know the MD5 checksum of the file, you can do a jarsigner -verify on your file or use an app that will allow you to do this on your phone (hint: its called AFV ;)).

Cheers!

I've been having some really bad battery drain issues lately. I don't know what is doing it. Nothing seems to be running a crazy amount, but something is obviously using resources because my phone has sometimes dropped 30% in a couple hours. It also has caused processes that are suppose to be running constantly (Lookout and System Panel which I've been using to try to figure out what is causing the problem). It's also caused notifications to not sound when a text arrives. The text is still there, but there is no notification.

I did notice that Google Services has a large amount of time under Keep awake, 51min. 28sec, but only 4min 17sec. of CPU total. The only think higher in Keep awake time is Android System at 1h 31min 29sec. Do you guys have anything similar under your battery use statistics? Are these numbers normal? The one thing that is definitely normal is that the display is still using the highest percent, like it should.

I don't think I have a run away sync, but I might try disabling auto sync for the next couple days to see if anything happens.

When I was experiencing some lag a few days ago I thought maybe too many background processes were running so in the Accounts & Sync menu I tuned off the Background Data and a pop up window said that it would indeed have some potential battery savings. It's worth a shot.

turning off background data had a dramatic effect on the battery life in my D1... however, with that setting i found that the i could not get the weather widget to update :(

if turning it off doesnt produce any other lil quirks like that that you cant live without, it will definately help you. that was pre-root-running stock 2.2

i like my weather so i turned it back on and havent tried unchecking it with my eris
