Root GingerVillain and GPS

turbohobbit

Android Enthusiast
I'm running the following setup:

GingerVillain 0.9
32.48.00.32H_5.10.05.30 (5.11.05.14 RIL)
ManU-HAVS-CFS-AXI kernel
128-1190 MHz (Interactive)

Ever since I've switched from Defrost 6.1 to GingerVillain I seem to have had problems with my GPS. Maps runs ok, the phone can find exactly where I am at any given time, but when I run CoPilot (v.8) the phone finds a GPS lock, then loses it a few seconds later. It may hold a lock for 20-30 seconds but then drops it. I have the same problem when I try and map a run using Endomondo.

I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this? Is GinverVillain equipped to handle GPS / satnav at the moment or is this something that still needs optomisation, like the 3D graphics issue?

Or is it my copy of CoPilot?

I dont drive so never use anything like co-pilot. Like you though, I confirm Google maps worked like a charm yesterday. So GPS definitely works.

Ginberbread is still very new so it may just be co-pilot doesn't work well with gingerbread yet.

May even be worth asking the co pilot devs what they think as you can prove GPS is fine. I use GPStest by Mike Lockwood to test my GPS. Maybe give that a go just to further prove you have no GPS issues except with CP

Just back from a 40 min run and runkeeper had no trouble tracking where I was, so there doesn't seem to be a general problem with GPS apps on this ROM.

Sounds like it's CoPilot. This from their tech support:

Thank you for contacting CoPilot Technical Support.

As Android OS 2.3 has not officially been released we can not garanty Copilot Live v8 to work with it at this point.

If you have any further questions, or feel that this incident has not been resolved to your satisfaction, please do not hesitate to bring this to our attention.

I'll check Endomondo tomorrow and we'll see what happens...

Of course since you can go into a shop and buy a Nexus S I think you could argue that Android 2.3 has been officially released.

I've just replied to CoPilot Support:

Many thanks for your response. Given that the Nexus S is already shipping with Android 2.3 to the UK (Nexus S from Google mobile phone - On Various networks - The Carphone Warehouse) and there are a host of other phones due for release in the next month or so also shipping with 2.3, I would argue that Android 2.3 has officially been released and is widely available for consumer use. With this in mind, please could you advise when CoPilot 8 Android will be supporting Android 2.3.

I'll let you know what they come back with.

Incidentally. I went for a run yesterday and Endomondo was still playing up. I'll try again today but I'm starting to think that EM isn't patched to support 2.3 yet either...

Well at least they were quick...

I have checked and HTC has not released an official Android OS 2.3 ROM for the HTC Desire. I am sorry that Copilot does not run on this perfectly, but as we do not have currently released a version that has been tested on this version of the Android OS and we do not support Copilot Live v8 on unofficial ROM, I can only advise you to downgrade to 2.2.
I do not have further information on when Copilot Live v8 will be confirmed to run on Android OS 2.3.

Now I took exception to this as the fellow obviously has no idea about Android, and is essently trying to cover up the fact that he has no idea when his product is going to support Gingerbread. So I replied:

Many thanks indeed for your swift response - very impressive!
Regretably I must take issue with ALK's position that CoPilot is not supported on my phone because Android 2.3 isn't supported by HTC. Regardless of whether HTC support the OS, the open source software has been released for developer use - regardless of platform - for some months now. The Nexus S is running the OS officially, and other handsets will be released to run it in the UK in the next few weeks. As Android is an open source software the choice of handset is essentially academic - if the unit has sufficiently powerful spec to run 2.3 (which the Desire does, because I'm running it without problem) then any software / app written to run 2.3 will run on any handset. Indeed, your download is NOT handset specific, only OS specific. Logically, therefore, if a handset can run 2.3 then it should be able to run CoPilot v8 optimised for 2.3.

Furthermore, your website clearly states that the Desire is CoPilot Live v8 compatable, and that the only requirement is that it should be running Android OS 1.5 or greater. Which it is. Indeed, on your FAQs the following is stated:

Q. What will happen when I upgrade my ROM to a newer version of Android operating system? Will CoPilot Live v8 still work?

A. Yes, you will be able to use CoPilot Live after installing an officially released new version of the Android operating system. Please be aware that it may occasionally take us a few weeks to fully support new versions of Android, and there may be occasions where a current version of CoPilot Live will not work with the latest version of the Android OS. We cannot guarantee support for unofficially downloaded OS updates.

If you purchased CoPilot Live from Android Market, it should automatically continue to work after you have updated the operating system. However if you receive an error message that your Google order number is not valid, please contact CoPilot Live Support

If you purchased CoPilot Live from the CoPilot Live web site or from a reseller you must first deactivate CoPilot Live on your phone before updating the operating system
You can deactivate CoPilot Live by selecting Menu > Settings > Licensing then press 'Deactivate'

Once you have installed the OS update you can then re-activate CoPilot Live on your phone

To conclude, therefore, this has nothing to do with whether or not HTC has officially released a OS 2.3 ROM as Android is by it's very definition open source so any handset that can run 2.3 will regardless of whether or not the manufacturer has issued an official ROM. I would suggest instead that the question must be: when will ALK be in a position to issue a version of CoPilot for Android that will run successfully on OS 2.3?

Watch this space...

Think I will! It just all seems a bit off-colour. If you can't support an OS for whatever reason, then make it public and say so, no harm, no foul. But don't hide behind bulls**t that will inevitably get you found out.
