Help Gmail vs googlemail?

Why is it that some sites require one or the other to login yet @gmail.com always works when sending an email?

My guess is that they're using the email address string itself as the log-in ID rather than authenticating via the Google account.

And yup gmail is same as googlemail

Googlemail is a legacy thing, because for a few years Google couldn't call it Gmail in certain countries due to trademark issues. In the UK it was originally Googlemail, and then eventually Gmail became available for those users. Anything that's sent to @googlemail will go to @gmail, and vice-versa. Some people might have preexisting logins and usernames as Googlemail
