GN repairable?

*sign* dropped the phone (verizon GN). Not once but twice.
first one created a hairline fracture on the glass. Not a big deal because when I hold the phone up to my face I can't see it.

Second drop, completely cracked the screen every which way. I discovered that cell phone cases are not useful especially when you don't use them. OY.
:)

But thats what I get. Lesson learned.

Anyway, seems like a colossal waste of a perfectly functioning phone just because the top glass is cracked. I don't suppose anyone know of a phone mechanic who can replace said glass?

Its not so much the cost of another one (though I can think of lots of things to spend $500 on besides another phone) but its a pain to get it back to the state I had it. Then of course I'm thinking I could just get a galaxy s3 but I don't think I can wait that long.

Sorry to hear about that. Have you tried contacting Samsung? It won't be covered under warranty, but I've read a couple posts saying a new screen will run you ~$160. Does the digitizer still work (as in it's still touch sensitive)? If not, you may be in a lot deeper.

wow that sucks....sorry to hear. IF you can find the screen online, it actually seems like a fairly simple swap.

THIS is the one reason i will always use insurance especially when i dont use a case.

See if you can find a teardown online for the phone and if you can find screens on ebay. But if Samsung can fix it for about $160, I'd say that's worth it.

Would you mind posting a picture? I like to have motivation to know that under no circumstances am I to drop my phone onto the floor. :)

I probably wouldn't mess with trying to fix it myself. $160 from the mfg seems reasonable as long as they turn it around quickly. Then again, check with ifixit and see if they did a teardown. If the glass is a separate piece that can be swapped easily I might consider it if the glass is available cheaply enough.

Here's the samsung contact info:

EDIT: Reading the teardown over at iFixit leads me to recommend that U Don't Fixit. Specifically the warning on step 15:

The glass is fused to both the display and the display frame. So don't crack the glass unless you're good with a heat gun, or you're fond of replacing the glass, display, and frame together ($$$).

Thanks for all the feedback. here is a shot of my damaged child.

Phone function wise, at least nothing is damaged in that respect. Although I will need to put some kind of screen protector over it so that I don't cut my fingers.
Guess I'll contact samsung and see if it is repairable. That would be the best solution. Hopefully it won't take too long to repair if it can be done at all. Based on what you guys are telling me, its fused so I'm outta luck.

Getting another phone from verizon is not worth it since I don't feel like paying them $650. Technically I can break my contract for $310 and get the phone from sprint for $150. Or get a used/refurb model from ebay for about $350.

But I think I mind as well wait and see if its worth moving up to a S3 instead.

Contacted Samsung. They said it can be repaired. They gave me an estimate of $189 (that includes shipping the phone back and forth). Takes 5-7 days for the actual repair and then of course time to ship the phone back and forth.

I guess thats pretty reasonable. I should add that had I damaged the phone just a month earlier, american express would have covered it for me. They reimburse purchases if the product is damaged or stolen but only within 90 days of purchase. It used to be a year. :(

$189 sounds a lot better than $350.

(my 800th post...... 800 sounds like a lot of posts.)
