Good News for F6 USERS!!!!!

Three months from a week ago. He said it was official. And it was a corporate store and he has worked there for 10 years
not sure if I'd I trust that. As far as I can tell, the only phones on the rumored update list that has yet to be updated is the USA Optimus G and a few other countries with the optimus G like French, Canada etc. A French carrier just released a screenshot of them testing KitKat on it and said its arriving within the next few weeks, I expect sprint to also follow in that time range or close to it. anyway back to the list, the Korean phone Vu2 has also not been updated. Our USA F line up of phones has obviously not been updated either but back in April I spotted that the Korean LG Optimus F7 was updated to KitKat.The only difference between the Korean F7 and USA F7 is that the Korean version has 2 gigs of ram and the USA only has 1 gig of ram and believe me even though KitKat can run on a phone with 512mb of ram, its a whole different story when you have a skin on top of a device. About a month ago I saw that Samsung decided to scrap the KitKat update for its international GS3 because it couldn't handle their skin due to the limited 1 gig of ram but the USA got the update because we have 2 gigs of ram for the GS3. Now I don't believe LGs optimus UI is overloaded like Samsung but it'll always be a question on whether kitkat that will make it to the USA F7 variant and the entire USA F line up. Now compared to OTA updates between USA and international devices, the USA phones usually get it 3 months after the international phones does. Now if July passes without any legit news or the actual OTA. idk maybe I'd be able to as late as august cause LG is the slowest out of all manufacturers for updates, if nothing shows up you might wanna start thinking of alternatives whether its a AOSP ROM or a new device under a better manufacturer *cough Motorola cough*. As for the F7 we have a cm11 built from source already, its not booting yet but we know exactly whats wrong and what we need to do but for now we're just being lazy waiting on the "KitKat" update cause it would make it so much easier lol.

EDIT:
Vu2 kitkat kernel source was just released on LG's page today meaning they will officially be getting the kitkat within a few days. So now its a few variants of the Optimus G and the USA F lineup, i gotta tell ya, this rumored list has been pretty much right. The entire list is almost completed.

So what you are saying is that we are getting it:D its just the optimus line that is more popular and then its us c:

Not a developer, if there is someone working on CM for F7, what are the chances of CM ever making it to F6? I'm much more interested in CM kitkat update.

if i send you a system dump could you start working on a CM rom? i volunteer as a tester even if the phone doesnt boot :b

No, i wont be developing any more than i can handle, the F7 is already enough with my limited time. If you want a cm11 port talk to this guy death2all110 . I can almost guarantee you that he also wont accept this unless he actually has a f6 in his hand, not even sure if he'll accept at all but he can be the one to tell you yes or no. It's ridiculous for the developer to develop for a phone without the actual device, i've done it 1 time about 2 years ago and i'll never do it again, complete pain in the anus and too much time wasted.

Hi Chevan,

So is the lack of phone with is stopping you from making CM for F6 ? are you willing to contribute to F6 CM mod if an F6 is with you ?

Yes, that and my lack of time is stopping me from joining the F6 users. Maybe you guys can round up a few bucks and buy a really low priced one off ebay or something and give it to a developer, like i said ask death2all if he'll be up to do it and even if he says no i suggest you "the community" still try and get that donor phone ready for dev that will.

That's very true but I haven't seen it say Q3 2014 for the f6 anywhere else. PA just says rumoured to get kitkat

That article was written 1 day after Phonearena's. It's very likely they used the information from PA article without citing reference.

It look as if that's what they did but i highly doubt it, their ETA's for 98% of the phones software update were correct and PA had no ETA whatsoever and also listed it as a Rumors/InsideSource. This article listed it as official, of course anything could of changed on the leaked info for us since then but i guess we'll find out in under 90 days if its legit.

Major android security bug for many android devices, including F6:

Android bug lets apps make rogue phone calls - Computerworld

"
A vulnerability present in most Android devices allows apps to initiate unauthorized phone calls, disrupt ongoing calls and execute special codes that can trigger other rogue actions.
The flaw was found and reported to Google late last year by researchers from Berlin-based security consultancy firm Curesec, who believe it was first introduced in Android version 4.1.x, also known as Jelly Bean. The vulnerability appears to have been fixed in Android 4.4.4, released on June 19.
However, the latest version of Android is only available for a limited number of devices and currently accounts for a very small percentage of Android installations worldwide. Based on Google's statistics, almost 60 percent of Android devices that connected to Google Play at the beginning of June ran versions 4.1.x, 4.2.x and 4.3 of the mobile OS. Another 13 percent ran versions 4.4, 4.4.1, 4.4.2 or 4.4.3, which are also vulnerable. Version 4.4.4 had not been released at that time."

actually, go to news.google.com and type in android security and you'll find tons of news.

Therefore, it would be totally irresponsible for LG to not give us the update. If LG doesn't have the resources to create a release, perhaps LG should donate each and every model to android developers to port it to the devices? If we don't continually get updates like the nexus 7, why should we even stick with name brand devices and instead, just go with the generics that people are known to support. It also doesn't make sense that the Android system isn't smart enough to self update and install from google itself. I mean, security bugs come up all the time, so if there's no guaranteed updates, we might as well go with windows tablets and phones as I presume they'll be continued updates for years to come right?

Due to this security reason, this is why I believe many companies are skipping 4.3 and jump directly to 4.4. My thinking is that I believe LG will be forced to give us the update to 4.4 due to this big security bug, otherwise, it is un-ethnical and unacceptable.

lolololol no, no, no, my friend no. LG couldn't careless whether we got security updates or not. While it's irresponsible, they are not the only manufacturer to do this. As of today android 4.1.2 API 16 is still the most used version of android with 27% of users followed by 4.2.2 with 19% and 4.4 kitkat with 17.9%. Any manufacturer who doesn't have plans to update a device to a higher version of android does not take security patches into contexts. I Can tell you right now after Q3 is finished "September 30th" there's a good chance that none of the devices still running on android versions from 4.1.2 JB to 4.3 JB is gonna get KK. Once again manufacturers look at this a business standpoint not a loyalty standpoint, if they feel as if the device isn't not too old and it wont cost a lot of money and time to update it to a higher version of android then they'll do it. It's impossible for any android phone that Google does not support to auto update itself and get the latest android versions and security patches. Not when you have a skin on top of android which almost every manufacturer has. In the future with your phone selection i suggest you choose a flagship device as the chance of getting newer updates is highly increased when compared to mid range devices. Or you can go with a better manufacturer like Motorola who doesn't have skin on their device, or just get a nexus device lol no more problems concerning updates for the next 2 yrs.

I do have a few nexus 7 devices I bought used and repaired from ebay. I'm thankful for google's update on the nexus, but I am still of the impression that these android devices are still not mature. Take for instance the running out of memory when clearly there's tons of memory. There doesn't appear to be any solution coming from google, which is shameful. The way I see it, the F6 has very capable cpu, so I can tell you that LG is permanently off my list of devices to buy from here on out or any company that won't provide perpetual updates. I'd seriously look at the window mobile devices. I am assuming that those devices receive indefinite update until end of support. I'm thankful that there's forums like this where developers are willing to put in the time to develop roms. Question: what prevents the gov from any country to not put in back doors on these roms? I mean, how can the general public trust these roms? the way I imagine it, all there is is just driver / kernel updates and then merge it with the android os right? It's a damn shame these companies are busy spitting out new models and leave the old behind, and that's one more reason of not buying new ones, and instead, logically, people will just switch devices. If Microsoft is reading, study the above and make it a niche where microsoft mobile devices gets the auto update! ;-) They've done it w/ windows desktop, so I can't see it can't be done with mobile devices. Additionally, these android devices makes me a bit nervous. You install free apps and it asks you for your contacts, SD media / pictures / wifi etc etc when it doesn't have any need! And nobody knows if that means these freebie apps are taking friend's contacts such as email, phone number etc etc, and family photos or even naughty photos or even the wifi password. Can someone tell me why Android decides to by default auto backup the wifi password?? I mean, that's total non-sense don't you think when the device is wiped, it can't get on the wifi, so what good is backing up the wifi?? Is this a ploy to steal people's wifi password? If android was mature, there'd be options to cut off all those access on the free apps, but I suppose google didn't do that to start to encourage the wild wild west free android app revolution.

For the record, I disagree, and I believe the F6 will have official 4.4.4+ update due to these serious android security flaws. If it wasn't such a big deal, then google wouldn't have kept quiet about it. It would be very difficult to imagine that all these pre 4.4+ devices (which makes up the bulk of the market) will remain vulnerable. You think google will stand to have it's name tarnished? We're not talking about a minor inconvenience; i'm talking about full blown major arse security flaws.

It would be very interesting if people can invest the time to research which cheap generic android phones to buy.. I hear they are dirt cheap in Asia. So if these devices are stable, then what is the reason for people to still buy these name brand cell phones? I'd like to see developers work on these cheap generic android devices that have excellent hardware. I've seen some before when a friend brought them over from Hong Kong. This is the only way to FORCE major companies to update their OS, otherwise, why are we paying the premium for these devices? Nexus costs more precisely because they provide the updates.

Lastly, I think it is unreasonable for google to rely on TMobile to update the devices. These updates should come from either google or LG. It would make sense that companies like LG pay google to do the updated rom or that LG keep these roms up to date. It's only time before one of these major companies pledge to keep their roms updated to develop a moat around their product.

Wow that was long lol. Ok so first off you can't run away from fragmentation when it comes to all things software & hardware its impossible. Windows mobile OS is just as fragmented as any other OS. To answer your question about backdoor holes, its simple. Developers and coders search through the OS and can sometimes unexpectedly come across a coding that probably tracks everything you do. Now if Google wants to risk their rep and OS for a quick buck from the government they can do it but most likely wont when android is a complete opensource OS. Lets take it back to gingerbread, that was the last known OS to me that had a backdoor hole for not the government, but the carrier to see everything and anything you typed/saw on your device. This was not Google's doing as they were never partnered with the Carrier IQ company, Carrier IQ was partnered with a few manufacturers and carriers. Anyway when a security researcher discovered Carrier IQ abilities sh*t got real lol. The Public was obviously not happy about Carrier IQ and the manufacturers/carriers of their device. Within a few months a good percentage of phones that had Carrier IQ received a software update to remove it. Highly doubt a situation like this will ever take place again or that manufacturer/carrier will be in deep crap when it comes to the survival of their company.

Spitting out new models every year and dropping predecessors is all apart of the technology business and that will never change, its a money making thing. There are a few apps that certainly wont need a few permissions that it request but a majority of them really need it to function. You'll just have to be smart and read reviews as well ask yourself these 3 questions.

1. Is this app from a trustworthy developer? Does it look like malware?
2. Do I understand why this app needs these permissions?
3. Does the developer explain to me why they need these permissions? (Are they listed at Google Play, along with the reasons for each permission request? Often, they are.)

As for the Wifi backup thing when it is checked under settings, my logical explanation on this is that if you should ever have to do a factory reset, when you boot up your phone and log into your google account and turn on auto sync it will auto restore the wifi passwords so you dont have to do it again. Again thats not a fact that just what i think it would be used for. Lol i dont think google is gonna be stealing/selling your wifi passwords to anyone. Theres over 1 billion android devices in daily use and for google to take 1 or 2 wifi passwords from 2 different users and come to your home and use it very unlikely:D.
Im not disagreeing with you about LG possibly updating our device to Kitkat, im just letting you know its not because of some random security bug that was found. In all honesty its because they want to lol. For right now i can tell you that if we do get KK we are only gonna get 4.4.2 KK not 4.4.4, in the future sure we might get 4.4.4 but no one ever knows, its up to one guy only and he doesn't care whether you like it or not. Their Flagship device isn't even on 4.4.4 yet. Phones are dirt cheap because when it comes to quality its cheap as well thats like a fact in every single product ever released. If the price is abnormally low then chances are so are its parts.

LG is the one who creates the update then they test for a tiny bit, after that they send it off to the carrier to test on their network and then carrier will also tell LG what they would like in their update when it comes to new bloatware apps and such and then its released by the carrier.

Now listen im all on your side here, as i have the Optimus F7 and its probably the most problematic device in the F lineup all because of one reason, GPS. I'm not gonna go into details but LG basically screwed the F7's GPS making it useless for every single F7 and they don't wanna take responsibility to correct the issue. I certainly won't be back with an LG device unless its a flagship device because of many reasons. The main ones for me is their locked bootloader's and slow OTAs.
