My wife told me tonight that if I wanted a new phone i could use her upgrade tomorrow as well as her $100 credit. Now I love my rooted Eris but I miss having a physical keyboard. Should I get the Droid 2 or is there a new Droid fixing to be released?

I was playing with a D2 in the store just today. It's a pretty nice phone, IMHO. I didn't like the original Droid, which is why I bought the eris instead - the Droid's keyboard was terrible. The D2 is much better.

Also, if you want flash, it has it.

I think that the Droid X is too big, but I'd look at that, too.

I was the same way when I got my Eris. The only thing holding me back is the D2 has not been rooted yet. Biggest thing i would miss is Tethering.

It has real tethering built-in, but you have to pay for it. I'm not sure why pdanet wouldn't work. And, there is root. Not for custom ROMs, but you ca get super user on it.

Droid 2 and Droid X are rooted, but I don't know what the situation is on the custom ROMs. I don't think you can load them yet because of the eFuse crap.

By the time VZW's version of the Galaxy S comes out, it too will be outdated. It will be called the Fascinate, and it will still be a very good phone, just not the latest and greatest. They are going for a penny (yes, one cent) on Amazon, but those are the GayT&T and T-Mobile versions. These are also on two year contracts.

I would say wait a bit longer until November or so. If Motorola continues to put eFuse on all their devices and the community is unable to crack it, it may put a damper on rooting and custom ROMs. If you're fine with that and want your phone stock, then it should be no problem and it will be blazing fast, either way.

If you want what's out right now, I dunno. Depends on if you root or not. The DInc should be good for you, but it's rather old now.

You'll see 3.0 by years-end. ;) I promise. I would say wait for "that phone" when it comes out.

screw it, go get the Samsung Fascinate!
xda devs have gotten stock 2.2 running on it if i read correctly
if I didn't get my X i would've gotten the SF
the S line of phones are pretty sweet

The only reason I would buy a new phone is to get the Physical Keyboard. I love my Rooted Eris I just want my keyboard back.

then you have two options
Droid 2
droid 2 world edition

there is the third option of holding off for the holiday season when the rumored 1.5 gHz
devices are said to start rolling out

Just FYI, the Fascinate is due out the first week of September. It lacks a good bit in the internal memory department, and the screen is a tad bit smaller (by a few pixels) but the chipset is definitely worth it.

I'll have to check out the Facinate....

I also heard that Quallcomm just released a Dual Core 1.5mhz processor for Smart Phones.

Not to be a buzzkill but Verizon only gives out $50 credits towards "new every 2" phones these days. It's bleeping ridiculous! I'm due for an upgrade in December and I'm going to wait until after New Years to see what comes out and then make my decision. Either way BOL on the new phone, sir.
