I've never put my phones in cases before but they've usually been much smaller and cheaper... I have my iPod touch in one of those silicon sleeves, you would think it's just keeping it from being scratched but it actually mitigates the impact of falls pretty damn well. Over the last two years it's taken a few tumbles as I've gotten more careless with it and there's not a single dent or nick on it, the border even prevents the screen from making contact with the floor if it falls flat on it's face.
Well worth it if you ask me, it also makes the phone much tougher to drop... The iPod touch's back is particularly slippery if left naked, I think phones like the EVO w/soft touch plastic are probably less slippy tho. These types of cases do tend to collect a lot of dust between the case and the phone, but it's not a big deal, just wipe it off every few months. They also tend to stretch a bit over time, mine is by Belkin and the sides are kinda floppy, but it's never slipped off or anything.
Initially it did make it a bit harder to slip the iPod out of my pockets but you get used to not yanking it out so swiftly so that it comes out smoothly, not a big issue unless you wear tight pants (or you're a girl, or you put it in your back pocket like my sister does).
I used to have a car dock for my iPod touch but personally I got super tired of taking it out and dropping it in every damn time I got in the car... Now I just use a Bluetooth dongle on my car that connects into the 12v port and the aux-in and lets me pipe audio in from the phone (over BT of 'course), LiquidAux by Kingston, comes w/a remote too, really awesome for those who don't have BT integrated into their cars, audio quality is not degraded much compared to the 3.5mm aux in (tho music does tend to loose a bit of low end, not like my Civic's speakers are bass monsters anyway).
