Goodbye Droid X...Hello iphone (VZW)...

Won't be switching. I don't mind the iphone. Its itunes I hate. I don't want to be locked into their hardware/software forever once I've made an investment in music. I like the freedom and portability of mp3.

You realize how stupid this argument is don't you? It wasn't Apples fault that they had to DRM your music, it was the recording industry that did that.

Since you can get most of your music free of DRM from iTunes now, your argument is pointless.

I've got a crisp Benny Franklin 100 dollar bill for anyone who is switching and wants to sell their DX. :)

What you gonna charge them when they want to buy their phone back after they try and don't like the iphone experience on VZW?

Sorry you think it's stupid. Locked or not, I really don't like itunes. I don't like synching a phone with their software. I'd much rather manage the files myself than screw with synching. But, what makes me happy obviously isn't for everyone.

I love/hate these debates. Though I don't consider myself very tech savy (no idea what the above poster was talking about) I am capable of figuring out how to make the Droid X do what I want. I am also interested in learning and making it happen. My wife, and many I know aren't interested in figuring out how to get the most from it. It becomes frustrating for them. They should use the iphone because it is just simpler to use out of the box. My 9 year old can figure it out.

When her upgrade is available I may get my wife the iphone in exchange for the D2. I'm not worried about the lack of LTE capability. I don't expect to have 4G for about a year in my area. And my guess is that Verizon won't have a new iphone until the fall or early winter anyway.

I don't know enough about iTunes to knock it or praise it. All I know is that I can't see how it could get much easier than punching the song I want into 'MusicJunk', downloading it straight to my phone, and playing it on 'Amp', 'MixZing', 'DoubleTwist' or even the stock music player for that matter.

It's fast, free and fun. Me likey the 3 'F's.

I won't rule out ever owning an IPhone. However, I am very satisfied with my DX, and I plan to keep it for quite a while. The DX has exceeded my expectations in most areas.

Is it illegal? Well most things in life worth doing usually are though, aren't they?

Besides, I gotta live up to my handle!

;)

I can upgrade in 2012. Which blows. I can hope that VZW messes up again and sends me an email early saying I can upgrade so they have to do it. In 2012 The Iphone 5 should be out, if that's the case, and it's 4 gig (if not i really dont care). I'll pick it up.

I like my droid x, I hate blur. I think the Droid X is going to be like my old BB, it's not going to get updated for awhile. I also do not want to put ROM's on my phone or root it.

I hate the 3G internet bug. It just stops working, I have to turn it to airplane mode, then turn airplane mode off and the 3G internet works again.

Love the droid X, love the display on the iphone better.

Wonder how much the Iphone will be out of contract? I also wont be doing a 2 year contract with Verizon anymore either.

EDIT: Called verizon just now, told them I wanted the Iphone and didnt want to wait to my upgrade date in 2012. Told them I wanted to end my contract since it would be cheaper anyways. The person on the phone got a supervisor. Came back and said "On feb 10th you can order the iphone with the 2yr price of $199 and we will NOT change your contract date." Instead of August 2012 to ugrade phones you might have to wait to december. which is ok.

I agree. I hate the idea of being tied to itunes for all my downloading and syncing. Itunes is horrible on PC. It's slow and clunky. Why anybody want to use it as music player is beyond me.

For all those jumping to the iPhone 4 now, you're forgetting something major:

Apple will introduce either an iPhone 4GS or iPhone 5 in June, with availability in July.

So all those with a shiny new 2-year indentured servitude contract will NOT be able to get the latest and greatest J-phone.

What you need to do is root your DX, then apply the DarkSlide blur-less ROM. Makes your DX fly! Then add in the no-throttle data update and you'll never look at another phone. On top of that you can overclock it for even higher cpu speed, but I don't bother.

I have an X, the wife has a Droid 2. There is no way i could go back to that small 3.5 inch screen. As far as the music player, it does the job, and its not tied to iTunes. A year ago, I would have jumped, today... NO CHANCE!!!!

Loving the DarkSlide blur-less ROM, running it now, but would you mind providing info on "No-throttle data update" please?

I agree with you all! iPhone = more competition, so now Android will have to produce some more awesomeness!

I love my MacBook, but I will not jump on the iPhone. I love my Droid X. The tiny iPhone screen just will not do!!

Just checked that out, thanks but ill pass.

When I installed it, my throughput tripled in speed. It's a zip file, so you must install using ClockworkMod. The download is in the DarkSlide thread I posted earlier. I'll go back over there (may take awhile - there's 280 pages on the thread) and post the link here when I find it.

Found it! It's Post #2758 and it's on page 276 of that thread. The link was posted by plower.net and the filename is

You're welcome.

I use Zune now that i have a windows phone and I absolutely can't believe I was using Itunes for so long...it's so boring and slow haha

But I am really excited for the iphone on Verizon.....the os left me wanting more after using android for a year and a half but I might try out the next generation of Iphones being released in the Summer(not the iphone 4)

I am a phone whore so I have no devotion to an OS(kind of creepy to be devoted to an OS lol) so i have no problem dropping Windows Phone 7 for IOS...Lol i already dropped android(though i am considering the new droid bionic)

I was just hoping that they would offer a new iphone or at least more features then they will be offering next month....But I am excited to see what is in store for Verizon, the iphone, and the droid franchise...I am especially excited to see the sales for both

unless they wanna shell out the $600 for one :P

Well, this discussion can be either theoretical or realistic. In theory, having the iPhone available on Verizon will tempt some to switch from some variant of Android.

In reality though, if you are considering a switch it's probably because your contract is up and you can do so w/o a penalty. This also means you'd be locking into a 3G iPhone for another 2 years with 4G phones and service rolling out strongly througout this year.

You could sell your X and buy an iPhone outright, using your current contract, but at this time your losing on both the Buy and Sell price. Many people will have the same idea, depressing the X price while keeping the iPhone price high.

If you have an X for a lot of people the best option is to just stick with it and see where the technology is in the summer. You'd have wrung another 6 months out of your contract and would have a decent idea of where 4G was with Verizon, Apple and Android.

I don't see where there is that much difference between an X and iPhone to make a new 2 year comittment with either. Stay patient and make a significant technology upgrade mid year (or later).

For me, my DX has met and surpassed my expectations in just about every area. The iPhone is a great phone as well and I'm sure many people will be happy to make the switch - it will be interesting to see what the results are with those who do get Verizon's Iphone4.

In another thread I read speculation that the antenna issues originally thought to be an AT&T problem were actually related to the design of the apple phone itself - hopefully the CDMA mods to the iPhone's antenna will mitigate this if true. I hope the Verizon iPhone4 does well and people don't have issues like AT&T's version because this will create a lot of pressure on Android manufacturers to make even better phones to compete with Apple.

It will be a while before I can upgrade but by the time I can I'd like to see much better phones than the Droid X (2Ghz dual or quad-core, 1280 x 800 or better screens, 12MP camera, etc.). Competition between successful brands like Apple and Android will make this happen much sooner, and everyone wins regardless of which particular brand one prefers - its all good :D

In the mean time, I'm going to enjoy the rewards of my rooted OC/UV Droid X which has survived everything I've thrown at it. I think it will last me for quite a while until much better options are available.

BTW, regarding the music player posts above, I haven't had any problems with 3rd party apps like Mortplayer - which has worked great for my portable needs. I also use iTunes on my Mac for DJing dance parties and general music playing at home. People can't really declare which one is the better music player, just which one is better for you based on your needs and expectations

Regarding kids and these phones....My 10 yo daughter and 6 yo son figured out how to work my Droid 1 and X with no problems. And thats with me not showing either of them how. They are 11 and 7 now. Maybe they are just tech gifted, cuz they both can work the phones better than their mother....lol

So the iPhone may be easier, dont really know. But Android isnt all that hard to use or figure out.
