Goodbye Droid X...Hello iphone (VZW)...

A friend of mine had a DX on order and they gave her a D2 to pass the time on while she waited. She played with my DX (this was before I had even rooted it) and decided she liked her D2 better so she cancelled the DX.

Personally, I couldn't go back to the smaller screen of the D2 either, but if the DX didn't exist, I could see being happy with a D2. I would really love to play with an iPhone since I never have had the opportunity to. I'm sure it would have some admirable traits, but I'm so addicted to the free things you can get on Android (i.e. - Music Junk) that it would be damn near impossible to ever consider switching.

Apple really screwed the pooch IMO by locking in with AT&T for so long. I'm not saying Android would never have made it had Verizon and others had the iPhone back when it launched. But they certainly missed out on tens of millions of sales. I'd say that in Androids infancy, the iPhone was probably a better product, and most customers probably would have taken an iPhone instead of wn early Android device while Google worked all the bugs out.

But the arrival of Apples wonder phone comes now when Android is on equal, if not slightly higher (depends on who you ask) ground than it, so I'm predicting Apple won't even make a 50/50 split with Googles Android sales.

The other limiting factor working against them is variety... fhey have none. If a customer HAS to have a keyboard, there is no iPhone for them. If they want a bigger screen... sorry. If they would rather have hard buttons than capacitive.... ooops. There are no choices. It's either the iPhone that you see in the store, or you can wait until next year.

Android is dug in deep now. Apple waited entirely too long to launch their attack. But the great thing about having the iPhone on Verizon now is that this head to head battle will surely ramp up the quality and usefulness of BOTH devices.

i just hope this doesn't mean that we as vzw customers will get shafted and everything that is awesome will once again go straight to at&t because vzw will homer the iphone. i hope this doesn't happen

I have had an iphone and I have had both a Droid X and a Captivate. Overall, I will say there are benefits to both ios and android. Personally, I preferred a lot of features of the iphone but android is catching up. What features? I liked apple's keyboard, I liked their magnification tool for selecting text, I enjoyed their integration of visual voice mail. Things I didn't like is that I have to back my apps up to my computer rather than saving them in the marketplace, not only that but it is really only syncing with one specific computer. Being able to see a list of my downloaded/purchased apps in the marketplace alone is worth a mint. For me, a jailbroken iphone and a rooted droid are fairly similar now. I wouldn't pay or burn my early upgrade if I had one to get the iphone 4. However, my upgrade is in October so I will be looking closely and comparing the iphone 4GS/5 to the current android offerings.

Oh and I can't wait for LTE. I hate not being able to browse the web while on a phone call. Mainly because I have people ask me stuff while on the phone with them and I need to look it up, but can't.

This is pure speculation, so take it with a grain of salt, but I'm thinking the iPhone 5 will probably drop slightly ahead of the current Android offerings in terms of bang for the buck. I do feel, and have always felt that a great strength of Apples is that they are very innovative. And they have been extremely tight lipped about their upcoming device. That tells me there are a few 'gotchas' in there.

But by the time your upgrade comes up in October I'd say Google will have not only closed the gap, but probably started to create one of their own by then. Where I feel Googles greatest strength lies is with picking apart the competition, figuring out what they're doing well, what they need to improve upon, and then taking that information and building their system based off of that. But again, these statements reflect my personal opinions and nothing more.

So tell me since I have no experience with an iPhone, much less a jailbroken iPhone... what all is possible once you've attained superuser status on that device? Can you download free music like you can on Android via MusicJunk? Can you create a wifi hotspot like we can with Wireless Tether? Can you over/under clock the CPU? Is the ROMing community as big or bigger than ours?

I'm truly interested in knowing these things. Thank you for any information you can five us in advance. :)

..the iPhone is an awesome phone.. I think anyone would agree with that.. even those who say 'it sucks.' It's all relative isn't it? In the absence of a great Android phone, the iPhone would be my phone...

I am a long time Verizon customer and have given serious thought to the iPhone as it becomes available to Big Red.

And after that consideration I must say I can't 'give up' my DX for what seems like just the glamor of the iPhone. And I have real-life practical reasons for it. I am not a loyalist of any particular OS..

With my practical reasons, It makes me wonder what others (who would leave a DX for an iPhone) are going after? What do they see that perhaps I am missing?

A few practical reasons I can't give up the DX:

  • I have 25 icons (read: options) on my big main home screen.
  • I can open a call/text/email with one touch from the home screen (to different individuals)
  • I have current weather conditions on the home screen
  • I have a music player on the home screen
  • I can start a audio recording on the home screen
  • I can turn on the 'flashlight' from the home screen
  • I can turn on/off GPS-WiFi-BT from the home screen
  • I have a boatload of widgets giving various info at a glance, on the home screens..

Those are just some of the reasons (All relating to the convenience of the customization of the home screens)..

The iPhone, as awesome as it is, seems like a step back in "features" if a person was the use the Android phone as it was designed to be used..

Am I missing something regarding the iPhone?

I have an iPad, so I am familiar with the OS, and I like the iPad.. but for an "all-the-time-in-my-hand" communication tool, the DX has been a heck of a work horse..

With a jailbroken iphone I could set up a wifi hotspot that didn't show up as me setting up a wifi hotspot for the purposes of being billed. As for the free music... not sure as I get free music from napster for wasting way too much money in BestBuy, any other music I want I purchase. As for themes, it was possible with Winterboard. I could change the quantity of apps per page from 4x4 to 5x5 and I think someone even had a 6x6 setup, though I preferred to just make folders in that case.

Honestly, there wasn't a lot of difference once you jailbroke the phone. It all came down to which environment you preferred. You had a little more customization with Android, but you had a little more polish with Apple. Also, if I were going to suggest a phone fora person who had no intention of jailbreaking or rooting, I would say go with iPhone at this stage of the game. Come Gingerbread my opinion might change, but not as of now.

Probably ios's greatest weakness for me that even jailbreaking didn't overcome was the fact that I go to school online and couldn't upload files to the message board from any browser like I can with Android and Dolphin. It comes down to something about ios not allowing you to search the file table. Some things other people might miss are widgets but I don't really use those. As I said earlier, I love the way marketplace saves my apps for me rather than me having to save a list of what I have downloaded onto my ONE computer that is sync'd with my iphone. Yes, I can sync another one but it unsync's the prior one. Also, I love the way that apps can be set to scroll vertically. I hate horizontal scrolling because I am a one-hand phone operator when I can be.

Oh, I also hate the small screen size of the iphone (though for a lot of people the smaller screen size is fine or even preferred).

In the end, I wouldn't let anyone make up my mind for me. I would at least try the phones out in the store and read online from the hacking communities what is possible before I chose one phone or another.

FireChief, does all of those widgets hurt your battery life? I admit that I shy away from live wallpapers and widgets because I was under the impression that they hurt battery life.

Personally I found that live wallpapers seem to affect battery life but not widgets.
I run in performance mode anyway and get around 2 days on a charge.
I also have a good signal consistently.

Man you hit the nail on the head with that one! Bravo...

Although getting people around here to admit would be harder than pulling teeth, I'm willing to bet (if there were a way) that a good 85% of this forum would be iPhone owners if Android didn't exist today (and there was nothing else in its place). The other 15% would be split between Windows, Blackberry and Palm.

Windows is finally starting to become iPhone-ish, but it's not a heavy hitter just yet. No the mindset of the guy/girls around here is definately that of someone who'd buy an iPhone if it wasn't for Android. As much as the haters punk Apple on a daily basis, this board would be the 'Jailbreak' community over at Apple forsure.

And you know, there's no shame in saying/admitting that to yourself or anyone here. Come on give credit where credit is due, you can't really HATE the iPhone if you like Droids, they're like maternal twins... they may look different, but they're of the same womb. It's like saying you absolutely LOVE Ferraris but HATE Lamborginis. Come on, they're both Italian exotic supercars. Sure most people prefer one over the other, but if someone gave you either one, you'd take it!

Honestly everyone here at Phandroid owes Apple a debt of gratitude. If not for their contract with AT&T over the past 5 years, this community might not even exist. I'm not here to say Android never would have survived if it had gone head to head with Apple on every carrier, but it sure the hell didn't hurt their growth, that's for damn sure. Fact is Android sprouted up to meet a void in the market. That void was those people who wanted an iPhone but refused to go to AT&T.

That's how the free market works, where ever there is a demand for a product, someone will supply it. It's why this will NEVER be a drug free nation, no matter how many police/DEA agents the government hires... there's a demand for drugs in this country, and so long as there is, people will supply them. There was a huge demand for the iPhone on all the carriers besides AT&T. Voila, Android is born. Supply meets demand, that's been the story for centuries. Nothing changes but hairstyles and Presidents.

If no one else will say you're right I will. Hell I know if Android had never been conceived I'd probably be writing this on my iPhone 4 right now. Only without Android out there pushing Apple to come out with newer, greater, better devices, I may only be on the iPhone 2 right now.

You see, with ying and yang pushing eachother, the smartphone universe is balanced. ;)

You had a little more customization with Android, but you had a little more polish with Apple...

I think anyone being honest would agree with that statement. I know that as much as I love Android (and I do love Android, don't let my respect for Apple fool you!), I will admit that it still feels a bit clunky at times... sorta rough around the edges if you will.

It really feels exactly like what it is, the newest kid on the block. Only this kid here ain't no everyday, ordinary kid. This kid is Mike Tyson climbing in the ring at age 19. He may not have all grace and wisdom of an aged, prize fighter, but let him loose and he'll put the competition on its ass regardless!

And I'm pretty sure Apple is laying on the matt wondering why in the hell it ever let this kid enter the ring in the first place??? Signing that 5 year deal with AT&T was the proverbial 'deal with the Devil'. AT&T ponied up a LOT of money to keep them corralled like they did, but in the end I think Apple lost a lot more than just money. They lost that curiousity everyone had about them before Android popped up.

The iPhone 1 certainly did live up to the hype in the beginning because it truly was that far ahead of everyone else when it crashed the party. And if Google hadn't picked up the batton for the rest of the industry and chased after Apple like it did, I'd say a lot more people would have switched over to AT&T by now than what they did. The plan was almost perfect, they just never saw Android coming. NOBODY saw Android coming.

But then after Android arrived, people didn't have to be so curious about the iPhone any longer, they had the 'next best thing', which quickly became the 'even better thing' (in a lot of peoples eyes anyway). I can say in complete confidence of my remarks that if Steve Jobs had access to a crystal ball way back when Apple inked that deal with AT&T, and had seen what would evolve in those 5 short years (I bet they seemed like LONG ass years to Apple once Android started taking over and they were powerless to stop them), my money says he tears that contract up and pushes the iPhone out on EVERY carrier, not just one.

I'd say just about every business class will be using this example in decades to come as what a bad move it is to isolate yourself in the world of business. In this day and age you can't sit atop a mountian and expect everyone will come running to you, no matter how super fantastico your product is. You have to be more accessible to the consumer. Or the consumer will find something that is more accessible than you are.

But anyways, I still stand by my/your opening statement... as good as Android is, Apple is more polished. For now.

My roomie ordered an iphone 4 from verizon during the preorder rounds
so when she gets it, i definitely will play around with it and see how it is on Verizon and the signal and data, i might end up getting one....

i'm so over android...well, the devices that american carrier gets anyway lol I want the sexiness you find in Europe and asia haha

Only time widgets hurt your Battery life is when they are set up with 'ghost syncing' or even 'ghost running' on some.

There are some widgets, even apps that kill your battery and slow your phone JUST for downloading them onto your device because they were poorly written.

Syncing is a HUGE killer though... All of my widgets I must have are set from their 5-15min update interval to 1-5 hours. I like news, but I don't absolutely need it right when it becomes available.

For me, the only Apple Product I was ever blown away by was their new 15" MacBook Pro, talk about ease of work flow.

iPods were cool and all, but my DX(even though its no 160gb like my old iPod was) has the ability for me to listen to my music. But know with Android, I find myself rarely listening to internal music, Slacker Radio and YouTube are my main music sources now...

I thought I was gonna get the iPhone, but I just cant leave Android. I cannot say I will stay with MOTO(bunch of d-bags) but that Bionic is looking very sexy.

I left AT&T when my iPhone 3G (first generation) went blank and wouldn't work. They were going to charge me full price for a new one and up my data plan $10/mo. I walked by Verizon and got a BB Storm (I know), plus a 19% discount for where I work and COVERAGE. Saved the contract break fee within 4 months and never looked back. Bought a D1 off ebay a couple months after they came out and don't know how I lived without it. Love Android so much, don't see going back to iPhone, but I do have an iPad and iTouch... Just love having the X with me any time I need it, it's always there for me! Had rooted my D1, but only rooted my X this past week for the free hotspot.

See, I know my dad was good for something ;)

He pre-ordered me an iphone and it should be here monday haha

Damn, couldn't he have just grounded you or whipped you? Making you switch over to the iPhone is pretty freakin harsh!

... lol, j/k ;)

lol my dad is an avid iphone user.

1)Beautiful Women
2)Fast cars...With beautiful women and the passenger seat
3)Iphone

Are the three most important things to him(his children are somewhere close to that haha)

LOL i first told my dad about the Verizon iphone....Within the 1st minute, he was already on the phone cancelling his At&t contract bahaha

It is crazy but i am excited to experience the iphone for myself again.

I'am so over android right now for the most part

Ah, sounds like your dad is very much attracted to status symbols, bling, flash... whatever you wanna call it. The iPhone is the ONLY choice for egos such as his.

Have fun in the fast lane!

2000 posts would be a record for a troll I'd think. However IF you were correct in that assumption then just remember a trolls sole purpose in life is to stir the pot. That's why you should just stand here next to me, with great big, warm smiles on our faces as we wave goodbye to this sweet little girl.

We can fall over in laughter once she's crested the hill.

;)

Enjoy your icons that's all iphones are good for..oh ya and it scrolls smooth..much rather have my scrolling widgets..beautiful weather widgets..hdmi out is a must...

I sure hope that doesn't mean you're not going to be around here anymore. I've really enjoyed your sense of humor, etc for the past year in the forums.

The iPhone forums can have part of you, but not all of you. :D

Her sense of humor? Yeah that's all good, but what I'll really be missing are those great big ti.........

.......cklish armpits from her avatar.

What?

Seems more likely a troll is present.

lmao haha far from a troll :) If i literally joined a website to post 2,000+ times just to troll over the past year, would mean that i have seriously no life(which isn't true haha

Seriously though...I have mainly been using Wp7 with my HTC hd7 and occasionally my mytouch 4g so i've still been here just not as much.
I can never leave this site unless I'm banned just because aside from a few arrogant or creeps, this site is a wonderful community.

Over the past year, I have learned so much about cellphone which opens my mind to other parts of technology as well and I am now a "Tech Geek" and love it

Also, I'd never leave this site. Where else can i see grown men with some form of penis envy go off on one another about which android phone is the best or how crappy the iphone is compared to even their backflips or moto devours :) It is priceless....the arguments and the subjectiveness to what makes android the best OS and anyone else who uses anything else is some form of an idiot...LOVE IT :)

But no...it's not the first time i've been called a troll. I think i was called a troll when I complained that i hated Sprint & the evo and frisco i'm sure you remember my eris days with smacky lmao
