Google is doing something cool again...

Signed Up. Google seems to be taking over my technology world, phone, browser, voicemail, apps, OS (soon). Amazing that Google was first a search engine, now it's in phones, computers, etc.

I signed up for that a few weeks ago and still haven't received a request. Signed up a second time though, just to bug them about it and better my chances! :)

This looks awesome!

Not Google; Archie.

Also, many came along between Archie and Google's inception. Google came in 1998, long after Alta Vista, Lycos, etc.

I think he means that google was initially a search engine, not the very first. Could be wrong, though.

I signed up yesterday. I just hope the wait is not as long as a Google Voice invitation! I have the Android SDK running on my laptop and I've built some things and been through all of the tutorials. Nothing good enough for the market mind you. I do more .NET(VB mostly, c# a little because I've never fully learned a c based language) and T-SQL (well, I'm a database developer by profession) than Java stuff. However, I've been learning Java over the past year and I am personally stoked about this one out of the lab.

I haven't been able to share mine yet (they're just silly small ones) but I can share by posting .apk files. I got them all saved to my sd card so I can run them whenever but I doubt anyone would find use in the silly things I make while in lecture.

True. I'm not looking to put ANYTHING on the market. I'm not that good, and I would have to spend a fair about of time doing junior development work to feel proud of anything. I build databases and all things declarative (SQL is still the Isle of Codd IMHO), and administer them..lol. I program to the extent I need to when it come to a data access layer for the developer and then I have it reviewed by said developers as they always run their database stuff by me and vice-versa. The programs I would be building would be personal etc. There are some things I'd like to program for myself and if a glimmer of a decent idea came out of it I would promptly go to the SDK and try to get some real work done (with help of course)...

I would like to offer this in my classroom. I will wait to see how the beta pans out and if it seems practical for the classroom, I will apply for grants to get phones for project use.

i signed up about a month ago, and was just notified that i was granted access. i have explored the interface a little, but haven't really had time to dig deep or try it out.

looks pretty cool though!

This really doesn't make me want to develop anything anymore... If they're trying to make it so anyone can develop apps then I see the marketplace becoming convoluted with apps...

I was wondering what filtering, app control measures are in place for that.
A $25 registration fee is all that's in place. I don't know if it's per account, i.e. a developer can pay $25 one time and submit "x" number of apps to Market, or $25 per app.

The more apps there are the more apps that can be good and useful. Apps that suck wont be downloaded... end of story.. no?

How will you know if an app "sucks" if you don't download and try it ?

Well, you will download and try it and if it sucks, rate it low. Others will hopefully follow suit. After a while, it'll have one star and no one will download.

There needs to be a rule that if an app averages under two stars for over 30 days, it dies.

The problem there is that sometimes people rate it 1 star because it doesnt work for their phone. Look at the app "Droid light". There are a ton of comments and 1 star ratings there because people with incredibles, eris', evos, etc. Didnt read the description where it clearly states that its only for Motorola phones.

So, while the app may be great, it may get rated down into oblivion due to ignorant people.
