It improves the Nav performance because the mapping app no longer downloads pre-rendered "tiles". Instead, vector information is downloaded, which is much less data compared to tile images. So now the app will pre-cache so much more usable information.
For example, Nav can now operate and even re-route even if you've lost your data connection. Before, nav would download a bit of extra tile info, but nowhere near as much info compared to the vector used by the current map.
Vector allows the phone to render views on the fly, including rotating and zooming/tilting etc., based on the same underlying vector info. Before you had to download new tile info whenever you changed views. Much more efficient now.
Pro tip: go into settings within google maps and enable pre-caching even when not connected to wifi.
In summary, you now have additional benefits, much better performance, and reduced need to download.

I don't even have a compass icon lol.. I'm still on 2.1 does that have anything to do with it? I'm waitin till 2.3 to upgrade

The Maps 5.0 update really screwed up my battery life. If I open Maps at all (not necessarily even use it), then close it, it will eat my battery life to the point where it shows Maps is consuming 95% of my battery and the phone dies in roughly 2 hours from a full charge. Has anyone else had this problem?

I know, I know.. I'm just too lazy haha maybe I'll get around to it one of these days, are there any major things that have changed from 2.1 to 2.2?

Question...
Has anyone had this issue? When I check to see apps running (checking what that battery is using), I notice that Maps is using (running) well over 85%. I force close it but don't understand why its "using battery" as the app is closed. Any help or an answer is appreciated.

Youre fine once you get moving and the GPS lady figures out which way you are going but sometimes I will set off the wrong way and have to turn around.

Not sure if this has been posted but you click on the compass in the top corner to enable/disable the auto rotation.
As for 3D its only in built-up urban areas. Downtown Atlanta has it, my neighborhood by Buckhead doesnt. You can still do the birds eye view, Google just didnt map the buildings.

here is a feature i wish it has... maybe it does and I dont know how to activate it.
gmaps can see traffic jams...but still trys to route me through the problem streets. My gps device will route me around the problem. How can I make gmaps do this automatically?? I dont want to be messing with it.. while in bad traffic.
