Google Maps Draining Battery

Hello All,

I already did a search on this and I haven't found a good answer yet. I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus, unlocked and rooted on stock 4.1.1. I am also running Google Maps 6.14.1, and lately....about the last 3 weeks I have been having severe battery drain. I was usually lasting 16+ hours a day, now with the same usage, I am struggling to make 12 hours. I am using GSam Battery Monitor Pro and BetterBattery Stats. I am getting around +20% battery usage on Google Maps daily....with 1500+ wakelocks and over an hour of awake time. The culprits:

NetworkLocationLocator
SignalCollector.ScannerThread
SignalCollector.Scanner
NetworkInitiatedService
LocationPrivacyService
AsyncCollectorListner
LocationReceiverService
NetworkLocationCallbackRunner
AlarmManager

I have left on Google's Location Service and Location & Google search, GPS off unless I need it, but turned off everything else and I am still getting drain. I have made sure that there are no new apps that have location services enabled....just the same stuff I have been using since day one with the Nexus. I have never changed these settings before, but again, in the last 3 weeks it has been bad. I already did 3 factory resets and that hasn't helped. Sooooo, I am not sure what to do next. I will wait out the day and get screen shots of the battery page and Gsam Battery Monitor.

Also, I have gone into Google Now and killed almost everything.

Thanks for any help in this matter.

try opening up Google Maps, letting it find you, then close it out

this worked for several others in the Gnex VZW forums

Alright, did that, now I will monitor how that works. I tried to do a search for what you were talking about and didn't find it. I guess I will just go through the forums manually since search didn't find anything. Thanks.

I made sure all my sync's are off or set to something like 2 hours, including the weather locations, yet I am showing maps is constantly waking the phone.

P.S. I just checked, my issues seem to have started around the same time 6.14.1 came out...At the end of October.

Ok, the above suggestion didn't help. I have done a battery pull and I turned everything off in Google maps, Google Now,location services and Google+ and I am still getting battery drain, as in maps is using 20%+ of my battery life. At this point the only thing I haven't done is uninstalled the app. If that is what I have to do to save battery that is ridiculous.

Uninstall the app and reinstall it. That was another suggestion in that thread.

Lol, thats actually funny that you wrote that!!! I uninstalled the updates last night and am running an earlier version and everything is fine. I have not applied the update as of yet since I wanted to give it a full day of monitoring just to make sure that was the cause. Thanks for the suggestion!!!!!

I noticed Maps eating alot of battery lately. I went into the maps app, hit the menu button and went to settings > location settings. Somehow "location reporting" and "report from this device" had gotten enabled after a recent update.

These are separate settings from the Location settings for the phone itself.

After I disabled these again, it seems like battery usage and awake time is much lower for "maps"....though still higher than I'd like it to be. I'll keep an eye on it for a couple of days.

Well I watched Maps for a couple of days after uninstalling the update and my battery went back to normal. I installed the update yesterday and everything is still good. I guess I just had a bad install a month ago. I was wondering if my battery had gone bad lol. Thanks for the inputs!!!!

For me, I have noticed that if I run maps and then just turn off the screen, maps and presumably gps will keep on draining the battery. But if I minimize it, gps goes off. A few times I have noticed this. I open maps looking for address of the restaurant I need to be and by the end of dinner my phone feels hot and lost 30% of its battery.

i think it has something to do with latitude. it tries to check you in wherever your at. as soon as they integrated everything together with maps my devices battery went down the drain.

If you got into your google account settings, then click on maps and latitude preferences and unselect "enable location sharing" and "location reporting". You should be good to go after that. It might not eliminate entirely but it should help.
