Root Google Maps force-closing since recent update

I am running V1.1 with the most recent scripts, and have used Maps once, Navigation once and Places twice. No FC's at all. I will note, however, that the last time I had Velocity on my phone (v0.4) any application that used Maps - Navigation, Places, etc. - would either FC or lag to the point of causing the phone to reboot.

I will try using Maps later on, and if it gives me trouble, I will let you all know.

I thought I had it fixed last night, I turned off stage fright, let advertisements come through, and had set my dalvik to 32megs last night and it stopped - didn't FC no matter what even on starting latitude. But this morning checked market for updates and viola maps FC twice and I didn't start it yet... I had updated to maps 5.7.0 thinking that might fix it so I guess it's back to 5.5.0 till they get it right.

It took me a couple of attempts (eventually plugged in AC power and set to no sleep) before I could get 5.7 to install, but it got there finally. Haven't really tested it yet though.

I still get the force-closes in 5.7 but now I think I know why. If I turn off the "Use wireless networks" setting in Locations & Security, the FCs in Maps go away completely. I read about this on a Droid Pro forum. The users there said that they backed out to Maps 4.5 and everything ran fine. I'm presuming that Google's rushed out the "social" stuff in Maps to get the features in place to go along with Google+.

I believe he may be right. I noticed that in 5.6.2 and 5.7.0 that sometimes when I started an app that used maps it wouldn't be where I lived. I've had it show me as being in Cinncinnati, and in Chicago (I live in Ga). I would have it "search" or try to "fix" my location without any luck. So I've also turned off using wireless networks to find my location which seems to be the ticket. (I have no idea why it would say I'm pinging on a cell tower in Chicago when I'm in middle Ga, guess I get great reception! LOL)

Turning off the "Use wireless networks" setting in Locations & Security seems to have worked for me also, It takes much longer to acquire where I am (especially if inside a building) but no FC's now.

I'm going to remove the download link to 5.5, probably by the end of the day so if you want it you had better get it now.

To help with this, install GPS Status & Toolbox and run that any time you need to get a GPS fix. Here's what happens.

1. Turn on your GPS. (I usually leave mine off unless I need it)
2. Open GPS Status & Toolbox and wait for it to lock on. Even with "Use wireless networks" disabled, this takes just a few seconds. It's an awesome app.
3. Once locked, close GPS Status & Toolbox and open Maps. You should retain the lock-on once Maps opens.

I'm not kidding when I say this obtains GPS lock faster than I've ever seen any device do it, at least when I'm outside. GPS Status & Toolbox grabs A-GPS data when it starts and you can watch it start locking up satellites. It's a gorgeous app, too.
