Google Maps stopped working with Cyanogen Mod

I recently installed Cyanogen mode nightly release Nov 16th. I noticed that google maps is not there any more although I included the Google Apps as mentioned in the installation guide. When I went online with Market app I could not find it. From previous experience this meant a country/region restriction. I logged using my desktop and saw this message:

I think the "Installed" status is from my previous default firmware.

Is there a way to download the apk file and make it active?

I have Titanium backup and I backed up my system and apps before installing Cyanogen Mod, but for some reason I cannot find the Google Maps application in the backup files.

I have the Rom Manager (free version) and tried the Google Apps file mentioned on the Cyanogen installation guide from the internal phone memory (so called root SD memory) but no dice; Google apps still not there on reboot.

As for the goo-inside.me - gapps downloads, the "20110828 Universal (Link)" for CyanogenMod 7 is the same file I tried with Rom Manager. I am not sure that that file has Google Maps in it. If it does not have it, which of the other files on that page should I use.

Btw, the same incompatibility (restriction) exists for Google Earth.

Failing all else, which country are you in or network you are registered on.

Some countries either block the use of Maps and GPS or severely curtail their usage.

You might be OK if you are visiting such a country and still registered on your home network but if you buy a local sim you may well see your GPS disappear.

Some of the Middle Eastern and Asian countries are favourites for this as well as China, I believe.

Also be careful in some countries as using GPS can be seen as spying and incur a fine or imprisonment.

At one time, even the U.S. had a 2 tier GPS system. One for the military and a degraded version for commercial use. This has, I am given to understand, now changed... or has it?
 
Currently in KSA (middle east), also placed the tags in reference to the region / carrier info.

As far as I know there are no restrictions for using GPS here. Many have been using it for many years already. Found an alternative way and will try it in the coming 2 days and post my feedback.

Yup, 'Selective Availability' was removed in (iirc) 2000 by President Clinton.
