Google Maps, uninstall or move to SD?

I've struggled with this 'phone memory' application space also. I would buy a lot more apps if I could store them! The various move/link to SD approaches help, but still 'phone memory' is needed for various things.

I found a real solution though - buy Samsung devices. Samsung build in a decent size storage into their devices, 8GB or more, and all the devices I've bought or seen have at least 2GB partitioned to 'phone memory'. I have found 2GB ample for me for applications - no more 'low memory' problems.

In contrast all my HTC-built devices have minimal built-in memory and minimal phone storage ~220MB on my faithful Nexus One. Can't even install my most used apps on that. And the brand new HTC Cha Cha I bought recently had one ~130MB available; just installing updated for the built-in apps and it was out of space! Sounds like LG is the same.

So rooting and linking or repartitioning or custom ROMs can solve it. But if you don't want to get involved that, buy Samsung (or some other brand that includes decent built-in storage).

Aaron.

Hi,

I've had this phone for less than two weeks. I have downloaded a lot of apps and I'm already looking for ways to free up internal storage.

All of the apps that can be moved to SD, I have moved them there.

Internal storage is 61.24% used according to Android App Manager (178 MB total, 69 MB available, 109 MB used).

Right now the biggest hog is Google Maps (11 MB) and I can neither uninstall it nor move it to the SD card (using Apps2SD).

Is there any way of moving to SD or uninstalling Maps without going root?

Thanks.

Do you really use all the apps you have installed? I find a lot of people download apps like crazy, but then never use 75% of them. Might as well just get rid of them...remember the phone is connected to the network pretty much all the time, so if you need the app back, you can just re-download it.

Buying another phone from a different carrier and paying there high monthly service fees is not a real solution for those who have already purchased the "V" because of the low monthly service fee.

Most of us in the Optimus V forum have a V because it fits into are budget.
If I could afford a brand new Lincoln Continental I wouldn't be driving a 26 year old Crown Victoria either.

Well with ~200MB I don't have room for the apps I use regularly, and certainly no room for games (boo!). With 2GB I definitely have the potential to have more apps installed than I can reasonably use.

It seems silly when I have a phone with 16GB of almost empty external storage yet I am restricted to using only the apps+app-data I can fit into 0.2GB of built-in storage!

I would at least like to have the choice to decide to have an excessive numbers of apps installed :-)

Oh sorry, I didn't notice this was specifically an Optimus V forum, I googled the thread and thought it a general 'move to SD' / Android discussion.
