Google Navigation now works in UK (Official)

My phone is running the Orange 'ROM', with Google Maps and Orange Maps (I accept that ROM has sort of been commandeered as a generic term for a phone OS image, but boy does it bug me, because they're not ROMs any more!), same Google Maps as you (4.1.1 / #4156), and appears to work now I've had a bit of a play - although I haven't tried it fully, cos I don't want to risk it starting to shout directions out of the phone speaker in the office, the silent mode under Android is still a bit puzzling to me and doesn't appear to do what I want it to all the time!

Try this: open the Google Maps application, press Menu key, go to search, type in a postcode, it should pop up on the map with a label pointing to the location. Press this label, then the second icon in from the left (after the push pin one) should be a picture of a signpost, press this, and I get a menu pop up with two choices: navigate or directions, I assume the 'navigate' option is what people are referring to, but as said don't want to press it until I get out of work tonight.

I would be very surprised if I can see it on a fully customised Orange handset and you can't on an unbranded handset with an Orange SIM in (I think this is what you mean?) - I suspect you just haven't been looking in the right place in Maps!

Been for a ride for 30 mins with it. It really is excellent and thankfully my t-mobile signal is superb for it. Now we just need an HTC Desire cat kit - is there one???

that would be good, especially those of us with poor orange data allowances!
I'm on T-Mobile with a 3GB FUP (For Android Phones only) - Girl behind me at work loves my phone but is on Orange, so has literally just rung up now to get some pricing, and Orange UK are quoting her a FUP of 3GB as well. Got her to check that because I was sensitive to the differences as part of my purchasing decision and had told her it was 500MB, but they are saying yes, Orange have a 3GB FUP on this phone. Would suggest calling them up and checking if you are on Orange, and would appreciate you letting us know.

UPDATE - The data they gave her was incorrect - it is only 500Mb and they have apologised

Regards
Ken.............

Cheers Miasma, that helped me work out I was looking in the right place, but still no joy.

However, I tried killing the app, then restarting Google Maps and it's now working!

So happy this is now working!:)

Try rebooting your handset. I had to do that on mine. ;)

Tried that and still not seeing it - what am I looking for, out of interest? I can see the Directions option on the menu but it appears to be the standard old directions as per normal desktop Google Maps, not the new turn-by-turn stuff.

EDIT: nm, I found it :)

Google Maps, Menu, Search, input search postcode etc, label appears showing search result. Press label, then signpost icon, menu pops up navigate or directions, select navigate.

Think thats about it really.

------edit-----
glad you found it.

i do have google maps 4.1.1 version then how to integrate with google map navigation beta version.. kindly help me where to get google uk map navigation ...

My tomtom is due an updated map! i just want to get 1 thing right in my head before i decide!

Google maps is free? it works just like any other satnav? and google will provide free map update when available?
If so whats the catch

there is no download its part of maps, I've already given the steps to navigate, as have others.

I just downloaded and paid for updated maps on TomTom, but thereis no catch - with our Google friends it is free. There is no need to update the maps as you're constantly 'streaming' the latest map from the Google server each time you use it.

Dont suppose there are any compatible speed camera database are there :D

Hi all,

This is great news! I just tried it out, however, and failed to hear any sound/voice instructions ... just simply the arrows and visual instructions. The 'navigate' option was there, and the popup which indicated it was a beta version and to be careful and keep eyes on the road.

Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Thanks!

for voice directions, select 'get directions' and it will then ask you to install a Text2speech app... havent tried it yet (and would rather have one with a single language to save space!)

Thanks kboya: I remember installing the text2speech app when I installed the [brut] version of maps. Didn't have any speech/sound for that either, so likewise, even with the new maps update, seems like there's no sound.

When I go to the Text-To-Speech application under Settings, it seems that 'Install Voice Data' is greyed out too.

*Update*
It seems to be working now! Just took it out for a spin :)

I can confirm voice does work, make sure you use the volume buttons to turn up the navigation volume.

Can anyone who takes this for a spin and uses a data measuring app or something confirm just how much data this thing uses.

Such an amazing thing to have a live sat nav for free but it's utterly pointless if it's ruined by the ridiculous data limits imposed by the UK networks.

It really is time the networks sorted out (or are forced to sort out) these stupidly low data limits. It's like they still thinks it's the 1990's.
