Google Navigation now works in UK (Official)

I am driving from Glasgow to Basingstoke next week, around a 6.5 hour drive. I will measure how much data is used on this trip to work out a rough quota for you. It's a long enough journey that the results should be pretty representative

Everything works fine on mine and the audio is there too.......you have to remember that this is still not a final release and only in Beta, but is still very good and things can only improve :)
 
Carbonara - I did 30 miles and it used just over 1MB (Yes I do mean just one MB). I had gotten the directions whilst at home on my wi-fi, so no idea if it downloads anything offline, but it used next to nothing whilst I was driving. Just tried switching off my wi-fi and getting directions from portsmouth to scotland and it downloaded 0.4MB of something.

Quibble - On mine and my wife's phone I had to reboot them both before the navigate feature was active.

I saw BBCClick tweet about this earlier. It looks good so far. The beta warning mentioned that the travel updates aren't real time. Does anybody know how up-to-date the travel updates are? Without up-to-date travel updates on Google Maps, I still might buy CoPilot. Still, there's the free RAC app in the short-term.
 
works great for me, tho the voice surprised me at first!

quite nice really. :)
 
I used mine tonight on my way home with my tomtom on for comparison. I was very impressed with google navigation, it consistently gave me voice prompts for turns before the tomtom and was just as quick to re-route. The only downside is the robotic sounding voice, hopefully real voices will become available

The advantage of computer generated voices is that they can say road names.
 
Sorry if this should be in another thread, but it seems relevant here.

Does anyone know if the Trapster app works in the UK? For those who don't know, it seems to be a user updated app so the community can add speed camera locations etc. Some of the reviews aren't too great, but it's a good idea. Maybe something Google can look at integrating?

Another point on Google navigation. I know it's still in beta and I'd be glad to help out if I can with details of things like when it tells you to turn right at a "no right turn" or do a U-turn on a dual carriageway. Is there a facility to notify the developers of local "mistakes" such as that. Again, would be a great community aspect to a fantastic (almost unbelievably) free service.

Isn't GPS free and not data? It might only be the maps that load. Not sure, though.
I'm on Orange...only 500mb. I wish I'd known before :(

Just to pass on my experience of the service. I drove from Warrington to Middlesbrough which is 135 miles in distance, its a journey i normally take to go home and see the family, so i'm familiar and wanted to see if there was any obvious errors. I found the service to be excellent, the turn-by-turn's were very prompt, much more in advance that my usual tomtom device.

There was a moment, when i was on the m62 turning onto the m1 when it told me to stay in the fork towards M1 London/Sheffield, i'm not sure if this is just a voicing error, or a genuine error in the navigation. Although you are on the left hand side of the road there is a left and right fork, I had to take the left. Thankfully i know the directions, i took the right turn.

My recommendations for change, would be the annoying robotic voice. Apart from that 4.5 out of 5
 
Yes all working fine, now to remove the brut maps, but I cant find it,does it have a different name like maps storage, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Found it and removed.
 
Maybe Google could consider updating the voice to a "friendlier" person. Possibly muliple voices? Celeb voices? If TomTom can do it, so can Google!

Such an amazing thing to have a live sat nav for free but it's utterly pointless if it's ruined by the ridiculous data limits imposed by the UK networks.

It really is time the networks sorted out (or are forced to sort out) these stupidly low data limits. It's like they still thinks it's the 1990's.

I used it last night for the first time, and it worked perfectly. I downloaded the route at home using my wifi, and did the journey whilst connected to just GSM, so it seems to work without using any of your data.
 
When you say "downloading the route at home" does that mean that you enter the directions at home, then take it out to the car? Are all the maps loaded then?

Someone posted a quote from a news source in one of these threads that stated that Google maps app downloads the route when you get directions (over wi-fi if at home and connected) and then only needs download more if you deviate from the route and it has to re-route (or that was the gist of it anyway). It really seems to use next to nothing when doing it like that for me anyway. And to be honest, on T-Mobiles' 3GB FUP, I won't use a fraction of that limit.
