Google rolling out OTA tonight that dumbs down search bar?

So in addition to the rectangle and activating your phone with your fingers, Apple also has a patent on searching your phone for things.

Yeah, this is not absurd. Lawyers are not ruining western civilization. Nope.

It's temporary, and only affects the universal search mechanism - specific searches, like in-app searches, are not an issue.

There's no freakin' way Apple's patent is going stand up to scrutiny. They literally patented having results in a search come from multiple sources. It's absurd.

My question is, how does Apple know about this? Do they have the devices? Are they disassembling code or something? I did not know that search bar could do local searches on your phone. I don't even use the thing?

Just wondering, thats all :)

Now I am slightly curious: couldn't Google just release a free app that could do the same thing? Seems like Apple couldn't stop that.

Is it just a coincidence that I can't navigate or set reminders or anything with voice search? It just does a web search every time. I can check for nearby restaurants, though.

Of course they are. Any reasonably competent company with the resources does competitive comparisons. Grocery stores send buyers to local competitors to compare prices. A company like Apple will naturally have people who purchase and use competitors products in the same way. They would normally not use the same people who design products to avoid allegations of theft. In some cases they hire third party engineers to do this and give them reports.

Is it spying? Yes.
Is it legal? Yes.

You can bet Google, Samsung, Microsoft and Nokia do the same thing or they aren't really serious about competing.

Hehe, it makes you wonder...

Deep in Apple HQ
Apple Exec 1:"Go ahead and put that Req back up for the Android patent violation tester."
Apple Exec 2:"Again?! This one only lasted two days!!"
Apple Exec 1:"You know, I really thought we would be able to hang on to them once we instituted the fanboi hiring, I thought for sure they were immune from the problem."
Apple Exec 2:"So let me guess, this one went to Google too."
Apple Exec 1:"Its all up to the lawyers now."
