Google Voice ftw

Wow I just finally downloaded and setup my google voice for no unique reasons and ahve to say it's the best decision I could have made. I am about to switch my unlimited text plan to the 5$ one because it's atrociuos we pay that much to text. Was wondering if anyone else has taken the same route?
 
Not for text (can't send pictures yet). But I'm using it for VVM, saving $3 a month and it works perfectly. Plus, I have setup custom greetings for incoming callers :D
 
I have unlimited texting as part of my voice plan that's at a promo price from years ago, so no need to downgrade that. I'm thinking of checking it out for the VVM stuff, though.
 
Yea the VVM is where it's at. Why pay for it through Verizon when Google has it for free. Love Google Voice (actually Google in general).
 
Is there a way to forward voicemails from when people call your verizon # go to google voice mail as opposed to only when people call your google voice number? Would liek to have everything just go to google voice mail and never deal with verizon's voicemail again.
 
Awesome! I never messed with VVM because you had to pay for it. I am a transcriptionist, so it's nice to have someone transcribing for me for once!

Yep, you need to login to your GV account from a PC or Mac first to set everything up. It will then send you a confirmation code, then you enter it into GV, then your device will setup voicemail on it's own. At least mine did. So now whenever someone calls my Verizon number, and I let it roll to VM, it goes to GV, plays a custom greeting (based on who's calling), then they can leave a message.

If they do, then I can open up GV on the Thunderbolt and play the message; If they don't leave a message, then it just shows a notification of a missed call. They also have a transcribe feature, but it's kinda buggy, doesn't work to well.
 
I did all the confirmation steps and have been texting away with peopel using my GV number but i must have done somethign wrong with the voicemail. I tried calling both my verizon and GV number with my work line but both of them going to the verizon message instead of the GV one and nothing gets stored on GV. I've turned it on in all the settings and stuff but can't seem to get it to replace verizon's voicemail. Any ideaS?

Menu ---> Settings ---> Call

VoiceMail Service:
Google Voice

VoiceMail Settings:

This is what it should have, if it doesn't then see if those items are available in each category drop down button.

Ah damn. Thought Verizon would be all godo considering you guys are using it too?

The buggy transcriptions are one of the best features IMHO :) . Makes me laugh every time...

It said the same thing for me, but it still set up just fine and is working. :)

That's because they're using voice recognition rather than a live transcriptionist. ;) It would take too long live. And if voice recognition gets too good, I could be out of work, so I'm OK with that. :D
 
I figured it out. If you ahve problems getting google voicemail to work, it's because your GV phone number is acting as a home phone, you have to change to mobile to get voicemail to work. This is honestly the greatest invention made for the phones. Just changed my text messaging plan to the 5$ 250 text plan. Saving $15 a month!
 
For about 2 years I have been using Google Voice hardcore (voice, text). I don't know my real # from Verizon because I dont give it out. I currently do not have a text messaging plan with Verizon so thats saving me $20/month. I dont talk much on the phone so I have the lowest voice plan and data and my bill is $70 before taxes. I just came from using the Nexus S on T-Mobile and transition was a breeze by using Google Voice.

The big thing I like is being able to text from the browser. Along with Gmail/Gtalk everything I do from my phone I can do from my laptop. Using Google allows for total freedom and not being held hostage to my phone. I try to convince my family and friends to use GV but I realized that its not for everybody.
 
I use Google voice for texting. I can live without mms to save money. Plus its very convenient to text from my computer also using the Google voice site.

Been using it for over a year now. I dropped my text plan to the lowest it could go...saves me an additional $10 a month.

Did you get drilled with a ETF from your carrier? I want to do this as everyone I know is being a punk about using my GV number. Like I'll text them from it, and they'll text my VZW number back :mad:

I was out of contract. If you are still under contract, you will get charged an ETF.

I figure if someone wants to send me a MMS, they can just email it to me instead. I'm pretty sure most phones when they want to send a MMS can specify an email address instead. Otherwise, eh, probably wasn't very important anyways.
 
If I just want to use for vvm, when setting up gv account do you use existing mobile number and google voice lite or did you select a new gv number and then forward?

Or does setting up new gv number on pc and then logging into gv app do all the forwarding work for you?
