Google voice

Lately I've been on a quest to obtain visual voicemail on my mt4g running cyanogenmod. Many people have told me to "just use google voice", so I read up on it but I'm not sure I'm understanding it correctly, so I hope one of you can help me out.

In order to setup vicsual voicemail will I have to now give everyone my new google voice number? Or is there a way to have google voice ONLY handle my voicemail? If so, how do I set it up? I want to keep my current number, but have access to google voice' visual voicemail services.

Thanks

GV will handle calls to your original number and/or your new GV number. It can also send notifications by text and/or email with transcriptions. GV can do LOTS of cool stuff. Just go to Google.com/voice and do some reading to learn more.

I use google voice for my personal voicemail. I also have a google voice number but I don't really use it. How you set up things so that your voicemail is handled will differ based on your carrier. For Verizon it uses conditional forwarding so that when you don't answer the call gets forwarded to your google voice account.

Don't forget the google voice widget. I have it on my home page so I always know if just someone called me.

GV will replace your normal voicemail. The separate number can be used, if you want. The GV number is only really needed if you want to get free texting abilities. If nothing else, you can give your GV number out to the stupid stores that require a phone number to sell you stuff.

It is already my main calling app. Fully integrates with android. Threaded conversations and visual voicemail are great. Free text messages! Still needs support for picture messages. Could become fantastic if merged with google talk and got VoIP calling and video chat built right in.

To take full advantage of everything Google Voice has to offer, you should use only your Google Voice number, but you can set it up so that Google Voice is your original phone number's default voicemail.

I use and love GV, but be aware that GV does not support picture messages or short numbers. Pictures are not big deal since you can send them via email or a social media app, but short numbers are used by a lot of companies for marketing purposes. You can not send a message to a short number using GV.
