Gorilla Glass

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned in this thread. Gorilla Glass is a tradmark, a brand name used by Corning. There are other manufacturers of Aluminosilicate glass.

(For what it's worth, GG was not developed for phones. It was actually made by Corning decades ago, and had properties that they didn't think would ever be useful in a glass, so it was shelved until someone got the bright idea to use it)

However, there are other fortified glasses out there, of which some are even superior. Samsung confirmed this via Facebook that the GNex uses another brand of fortified glass.

Take that information and then make a decision on what works best for your needs.

It would be nice if Samsung would reveal what type of glass they are using. If we could see hyped-up marketing about the glass, along with a catchy name for it, that would make us feel better.

I just hope they don't name it "hyper-glass."

Back to the topic, I'm with nj02vette: There are tons of different kinds of reinforced glasses out there, and it shouldn't matter whether Galaxy Nexus comes with GG or some other brand. Reinforced glass is a reinforced glass.

So you're saying a gimmicky name/pitch will make you feel better rather than just hearing that the glass is indeed fortified? Infomercial companies must love you!

Oh oh oh, lets think of douchey names for a more hardcore glass!

Tapout Glass

Affliction Glass

Extreme Couture Glass

UFC Glass

Roid Glass

Bro Glass

I Can Bench More Than You Glass

:D:D

It isn't about the name, it is about the material. I don't care much who makes it, I care that they used a hardened material for the large area that tends to be made of very breakable material. If another company makes a glass that has similiar scratch resistance and resistance to damage that would change things.

I keep waiting to hear what the screen is made of and the durability specs. But with out something like Gorilla Glass I won't risk getting this phone.

I've never seen durability "specs" even for the GG. The GN does have "fortified" glass. that is probably the most info. you'll get. Same with the iPhone 4/4s from what I understand(they don't use GG either)

Gorilla Glass is the gold standard of fortified glass. If you get it with a phone, you know that it is going to be high quality.

When you get an unspecified type of fortified glass, you don't know what quality it is going to be. I hope it is as good or better than GG, but there will be some uncertainty and doubt.

That's pretty much my take on the whole debate! If its GG, well then that pretty much tells the story right there, and puts alot of people at ease. However with it not on there, and Samsung not saying...Hey Ladies and Gentleman we put something on here that's very very durable and we can assure you it will work as good as some other stuff that's out there…That would be fine too. But not a peep! So at the end of the day, its regular glass, it's not GG, and that's that!

If someone still wants the GNex they're going to buy it, regardless of what glass it has on it.

I've read here and on the Corning website that my DInc has Gorilla glass. I currently have a 3/4" scratch and a 1/2" on my screen. So you'll have to forgive me if I'm not heartbroken over the lack of it in the GNex.

It all comes down to the same point, you have to take care of your phone. If you can't, buy a screen protector/case, and if that isn't enough you have to either suck it up or buy cheaper phones.

^This. Reading this thread I was becoming extremely concerned about the whole lack of gorilla glass. Read the engadget article just a bit ago and I gotta say that I agree with you 100%. You gotta take care of your phone. I've had my OG Droid since the day it was released and it looks brand new...never had a case, screen protector came off LONG ago. I don't put it in pockets with car keys or anything that might scratch it and I generally handle it like I'm handling an electronic gadget that I paid a couple hundred $$ for. Yes, I've dropped it a couple times, and thankfully nothing has happened. But I don't think there will be much difference between "fortified glass" and "gorilla glass" -- although only time and actual drop tests will confirm.
Regardless, this has become a non-issue for me. I just plan on taking care of my phone.

Have had DX for a year and a half. No Gorilla Glass (that I know of). No screen protectors, no case. I have dropped it a handful of times.

Not even the slightest scratch on the screen.

Gorilla Glass or not... I put this in the same boat as the phone being an extra 0.250 or 0.375" long - makes no difference to me at all.

It doesn't matter if it is gorilla glass or not.

It's all hoky marketing just like Monster cables.

I've had the Incredible for 2 years with many drops and the glass is fine.

I've heard many gorilla glass drops and completely shattered.

Don't get so caught up in names.

I think the reason why Nexus doesn't have GG is that Corning probably couldn't make curved glass surface at reasonable cost for Samsung/Google. So they instead used other glass vendor that can produce fortified curved glass with similar or better spec as GG. This seems to be the case with Nexus S too. Google was probably involved in selecting major parts of Nexus and I can't imagine they overlooked this one.
Bottom line is that it should be just as good as GG and no matter what glass it is we should take good care of phone to avoid scratches. I saw many cases that GG phone was scratched.

FYI the incredible IS GG (who knew?)

That said, your point of not getting caught up in names is very true...
