Gorilla Glass

Just to Clarify...

The Glass is called Nexus Hyper Glass...It's supposed to be un-scratchable and
wife throwing phone proof! I'm all in...

Who needs GG when you have Hyper Glass and Hyper Skin on the back...

maybe with the barameter, the phone will be able to tell when it is dropped and use the gyro to flip itself over and always land glass up?? kinda like buttered toast always falls butter down.....

Hopefully this puts end to all this whining on GG on Nexus. Found this on Phonearena.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus uses some type of "fortified glass", after all

Gorilla Glass was trademarked in 2008 for Corning's alkali aluminosilicate glass, their patent for such glass ran out some 20 years ago, anyone can make as much alkali aluminosilicate glass as they want without having to pay Corning for a name, Apple uses alkali aluminosilicate glass in the iPhone not Gorilla Glass. Using a non-name version isn't what makes them fail drop tests, since alkali aluminosilicate glass isn't shatterproof by whatever you call it but due to the design of the phone itself, alkali aluminosilicate glass is just more scratch resistant and a bit more bendable.

Glass is made by Samsung Corning Precision Glass.

It is joint venture company between Samsung and Corning.

It's the same type of glass used in S2, but without the Gorilla branding.

Have had DX for a year and a half. No Gorilla Glass (that I know of). No screen protectors, no case. I have dropped it a handful of times.

Not even the slightest scratch on the screen.

Gorilla Glass or not... I put this in the same boat as the phone being an extra 0.250 or 0.375" long - makes no difference to me at all.

DX has Gorilla Glass

The original Incredible has Gorilla Glass? I didn't know that. I thought back when it came out they confirmed that it did not have GG. Here I thought I was just really good at taking care of my screen...

Anyway, I agree on not getting caught up on a stupid name. It could be called Pile of Baby Poop Glass, and if it was better than Gorilla Glass or similar and on a phone that I really liked I would still buy it.

Trust me I "just" got proved wrong about the Dinc last week (I thought it wasn't GG either) It's now on Corning's "official" list of phones with GG.

oh well :)

I am sure that if Guy Romain (a Google Engineer) is confident enough to "lock" his GN into the panning stand he fashioned for the time-lapse shot using unpadded battery terminal clamps, it has some sort of pretty darn scratch resistant glass over the screen...

To me, all this "Gorilla Glass" hype is just like every other "gold standard" of other brand name hardware that the "hardcore elite swear by."

From the sounds of it, it's more about the name than the product. This is a road I have been down many, many, many, MANY times before. A decent product with which you are paying more for the brand name than the item itself. Where you can get similar items that are the same quality (and oftentimes better) for a whole lot less money.

Monster Cables, Dynamat, Bose, these companies/ products certainly fall into this category. It would not surprise me that this is another one of those times. From all of the posting here and other places, it sure as hell looks like it.

My opinion: If you can't stand that the Nexus Prime (I will keep calling it that) won't have Gorilla Glass but are still going to buy it anyway, then do one of two things: 1. Take care of your phone. 2. Spend 3 bucks and buy a screen protector.

Yea this is probably the Glass they used! The article is posted from today, and notice the guy is bending the glass..hint, Galaxy Nexus curved screen..

Ok feel a bit better, and since I wasn't planning on buying for a couple weeks at least I will watch the reviews and see what they think of the fortified glass.

All I really cared about was the glass was durable, and GG is one of the easy ways to know it will hold up.

Don't forget - A brand name screen protector! ZAGG or Ghost Armor... Nothing but the finest pieces of clear plastic. Some no-name $3 screen protector is unacceptable.

+1 for Lotus Glass. Let's hope. I was all in for the RAZR, but after watching several videos of "leaked" ICS from SDK. I will NOT wait a day over Nexus debut for that. Wow, and now if indeed the glass is Lotus or the equivalent of GG, I will officially be all in for Nexus. The only remaining test is the greenish tint. But come on, What company today would #1 bring out a phone with inferior glass, and #2 inferior resolution and color. Too much is hinging on this phone for it to be second best. There will be an X on ebay very soon.

I wish Samsung/Google would be more specific about the "fortified glass" they're using. If it were lotus glass, that would be sweet.

They may be waiting until actual "release time" to release all the details, but we'll see ;)

It's certainly looking like they did use Lotus Glass, but I don't want to get my hopes up :D

side note: since it is known that Corning and Samsung work closely with one another, could it be possible that Samsung has used a proprietary glass they made together for the Galaxy Nexus? Maybe that fictional (read: i just made it up) joint venture was the stepping stone to making the mass produced version known as Lotus Glass?

It doesn't really bother me either way if it's GG or LG or "xG" (x - enter your company of choice here) , I just want the griping on the glass type to cease, but I guess it's just wishful thinking on my part........lol

I'm with you on that one, I don't think the lack of GG or LG will stop people from buying the phone as much as Verizon releasing the phone with 16gig storage vs 32 gig.

Yeah, that's what I'm struggling with now.......if it's only 16GB I may just skip it entirely, even if it was 32GB at the wrong price point I may just skip it too.
